I thought it was interesting that Shannon, seemingly, only went on the mountain climbing expedition to spite Boone, but her presence ended up being totally critical to the mission. If she hadn't gone, they would've had no idea what that message said.

When I noticed this, it made me think of the island giving characters things they need.
Shannon's trying to prove she's not worthless, and even though she's a huge baby about it, she gets the chance to prove just that.
