I just hate how fake the character is. He gives stupid nicknames to everyone. I just don't think people would act like him. Jack acts a little fake at times but I like his character. Locke and Hurley are the best.

View Full Version : I don't hate him because he is a jerk Locke 06-12-2005, 09:26 AM I just hate how fake the character is. He gives stupid nicknames to everyone. QueenElessar 06-12-2005, 04:23 PM Well there ARE people we are seeped in sarcasm and who are big on pop cultural references...people who go around calling other people by cute names occasionally. Hell, I do it myself. ;) But of COURSE it is exaggerated with Sawyer...he IS a fictional character. Any character within fiction is only going to be realistic to a certain point. The dramatic aspects of Sawyer...his personal struggles, his complexities, his humanity...there is nothing fake about THOSE. His emotional journey is one that I personally feel to be very realistic and very touching. But the comic aspects of the character are intended to be a little over the top. It's not that no one is antagonistic or sarcastic like that in real life...but it's never as perfectly crafted or clever in real dialogue ;) Every drama needs characters that lighten the mood and provide some fun moments. And Sawyer fulfills that role in many ways. It's not intended to be a direct representation of real life. His personality type is certainly one that I myself identify with...and see in people everyday...but it's purposely exaggerated for the purpose of good fiction :) cjwtexas 06-12-2005, 06:28 PM Plus it's been said that Josh has nicknames for the other actors (albeit nicer ones than Sawyer) so it isn't really all that strange or fake. Some of us enjoy a good smartass! :lol2: elfdream 06-21-2005, 04:37 PM Its getting old and predictable though....I think I might like him a lot better if after his raft experinece he comes back and just calls people by their proper names... Of course we all might drop down dead the first time he does it... ;) QueenElessar 06-21-2005, 04:42 PM I would disagree with that... if only beacuse using peole's REAL names is a good way of showing that he's serious. When Sawyer drops the act and puts the BS aside, he calls people by their real names. Or when he's vulnerable and exposed...he does it as well. It's a good contrast to his usual persona, which is a defense mechanism for him...and I hope they keep that aspect :) And whether or not it's predictable is all a matter of opinion ;) Again...large fanbase would disagree ;D (it is somewhat predictable, but in a good way in my opinion) elfdream 06-21-2005, 05:35 PM But the fact that its a large fanbase doesn't impress me all that much. Large groups of people can be wrong... ;) You can almost tell what he is going to say judging by the situation around him. Ok..this is happening. Sawyer opens his mouth. He's going to give some kind of smart mouth answer....he just doesn't 'grab' me for some reason and what he does is of interest to me. However you and I have had similar discussions before and just gone around in circles. I am holding out tiny hopes for him ...but unfortunately judging by our past posts if I begin to LIKE him because of what I might consider to be 'real' character developement* you might decide he has 'lost' something and move onto someone else....or would you? Just curious. bobbinghead 06-21-2005, 08:51 PM But the fact that its a large fanbase doesn't impress me all that much. Large groups of people can be wrong... The fact that you care to start a thread and keeps discussing about Sawyer the Character shows the success of this character good or bad.. he interests you enough to post against him. ;D elfdream 06-21-2005, 09:32 PM I didn't start the thread. The fact is its in the "I'm just no that into forum' where we can discuss why we don't understand the appeal of certain characters. Its supposed to be a safe place where we can ask questions and make comments without being thought we have two heads because we don't follow the crowd. It can get lonely out there and its nice to find like minded people. And I would do the same with other characters but even though I might not be a big fan of other charactesr for the most part I can understand why people like them. Apart from his looks I don't understand the fascination with Sawyer and actually I'm more here to meet with like minded people than I am with any kind of fascination Sawyer himself. QueenElessar 06-23-2005, 05:33 AM But the fact that its a large fanbase doesn't impress me all that much. He's going to give some kind of smart mouth answer....he just* doesn't* 'grab' me for some reason and what* he does is of interest to me. No one's opinions are ever wrong. So you can't say that large groups of people can be wrong about whether or not they find Sawyer predictable. Only they can judge that for themselves. The only thing the large group indicates is that they enjoy him....and you can't dispute that. Everyone is predictable to some degree. I could probably predict how most of the characters would behave in a certain situation...but that's part of the fun of getting to know characters. But I would disagree that every time Sawyer opens his mouth he makes a smart *** comment. He is a smart *** most of the time...but that's why his vulnerable moments are that much more poignant. See the thing is that we GET that you aren't partial to him...and that's fine. And I know that this is a 'I'm just not into you' thread...but you DO seem to spend a lot of energy making sure everyone knows that you don't like Sawyer. I guess I just don't understand that. Why is it so important to you that you get the opportunity to repeatedly point out that you don't like Sawyer? Is it just that you don't like the fact that he has a large fan base and you feel you need to counteract that? I'm not even trying to be rude (although I know it may sound that way), but I'm honestly curious. I can understand making your dislike of the character known...but why KEEP coming back to it? I don't like Charlie! There I said it ;) He started off as my favourite character because I'm a LOTR nut and I love Dom! :) But he has slowly slid down my list all year to the point where I don't find him that enjoyable. But I'm not going to spend time giving your my reasons...because it doesn't really matter. I've never once posted about how I don't like him....because I guess I just don't see the point. :-\ However you and I have had similar discussions before and just gone around in circles. I am holding out tiny hopes for him ...but unfortunately judging by our past posts if I begin to LIKE him because of what I might consider to be 'real' character developement you might decide he has 'lost' something and move onto someone else....or would you? Just curious. -Elfdream- I have no problem with Sawyer developing in any direction they choose to. I adore the character...and I'm unlikely to move on. If he lost everything that made him Sawyer...he wouldn't be the same character anymore, and it would be a case of bad writing ;) Ideally Sawyer will continue his journey towards redeption, learning to face his past, deal with other people, and overcome the things that are holding him back...while still maintaing his personality. If he changed his personality it would be unrealistic and I know the producers of Lost are better than that :) It just irks me when you say things like 'real' character developments, because often times it seems like you are insinuating that you are somehow the only one who 'sees the light'. That you view things in a more sophisticated way than the rest of us. There are many people...and not just women who think he's attractive...that are very impressed with the Sawyer character and who are really intrigued by what they see onscreen. He has had plenty of 'real' character developments this year...as has everyone else. You may not have appreciated them...but you can't say they are not 'real'. I'm sorry that you don't get the 'fascination' with the character...but clearly there is one. And it's not just women. From what I've seen...he generally ranks fairly high when men rank the characters as well. Again, you may not care about large fan bases...but there is clearly something about the character that people connect with! It's not just his looks...there are tons of incredibly good looking people in the world to fixate on...so why the character of Sawyer? Because for some reason we're drawn to him. Period. It seems that what it would take for you to appreciate Sawyer...would be for him to become a completely different character. You don't seem to like the way he's constructed at all. Continue to hold out hope for that if you wish....while many other people will continue to enjoy him for who he is :) PhillyGirl2873 07-24-2005, 03:57 PM Plus it's been said that Josh has nicknames for the other actors (albeit nicer ones than Sawyer) so it isn't really all that strange or fake.* Some of us enjoy a good smartass! :lol2: Especially me, since I'm such a smart-***. :lol2: hskr_n_hi 07-24-2005, 04:17 PM I love the character Sawyer. Sure, he's pretty :), but he is an interesting, complicated character that is fun to watch. As far as his nicknaming goes, I know plenty of follks who operate that way. I couldn't tell you the last time my dad actually called me by my real name. It's not offensive - it's endearing. Now I do the same thing with my kids, too. His smart-***-ness (check me out making new words), I think, is just a part of who he is. I grew up in a family of smart-*****, and we do it partly to cover up how we really feel, but mostly just to get a giggle. We love giving each other a hard time, but usually people on the "outside" think we're mean to each other. (My husband still doesn't get it. :)) I think Sawyer nicknames people and is a smart-*** because that is just who he is. He was brought up that way. I don't think he necessarily means for his nicknames to piss people off...it is just a side benefit when people are bad to him. :) Same with the smart-*** comments. He's not interested in being PC just to make people like him. Anyway, I think these are interesting points of Sawyer's character. It will be fun to see how his story develops... We make fun of each other and call each other names. Sometimes I insult my friends (by accident) because they are not used to the kind of humor I grew up with. By the Way, my family nickname is "The Brat." jbdean 07-24-2005, 04:29 PM I just hate how fake the character is. He gives stupid nicknames to everyone. I just don't think people would act like him. Jack acts a little fake at times but I like his character. Locke and Hurley are the best. Have to disagree with you, Locke. I worked with a guy that went around giving everyone cutesy nick names ... even when he knew it annoyed some (like me) and would keep using them even when asked not to. And this guy was no rebel, no trouble maker. He was very sophisticated and polished. He just thought his nicks were funny. So, it just depends on what your experiences in life have been. The writers work together on character development and draw from their own experiences. Must have been some that knew a guy like I did (wonder if it was the same guy? j/k) when they developed Sawyer. Personally, I don't see any of the characters that come across as fake ... maybe Ethan, but then he was supposed to come across as weird (I think) and he sure did! LOL Sorry, tho, that those characters don't work for you. Maybe it would help to keep in mind that the world has a ton of personalities that we haven't met yet in real life. :) hskr_n_hi 07-24-2005, 04:52 PM PhillyGirl - my family nickname is either "Little Jo Blue" or "Peedles". :) I have to watch my step with some of my friends, too. :) I just forget and slip into smartie mode... |
