View Full Version : Special
DIonisis6 06-13-2005, 01:27 PM We all seem to remember the episode where Boone called Shannon "Special"..Now being that Walt is special as well, is Shannon harboring any kind of special talents ?
I wonder how things will progress with her story line, s far even before Boone, she has not had any kind of gripping storyline.
ladyrune24 06-13-2005, 01:54 PM I noticed that as well and would be interested in them explaining that comment in the future but with Boone dead, I have my doubts.
flora 06-21-2005, 11:44 AM Well, considering her lack of a flashback episode, we can only guess. I wonder if any birds hit the windows of houses she stayed in?
addicted2much 06-21-2005, 11:55 AM In another thread it was brought up ,that Walt and Shannon managed to go through the plane
crash without any cuts or bruises . I think everyone else had some sort of minor injury .

I'm sure she broke a nail at least. :D Hadn't thought of that...even Claire had that cut on her chin. Hmmm... Though...Sawyer? Kate? Boone? Charlie? Did they have visible injuries? I can't remember and I just rewatched the pilot episodes for like the fifth or sixth time!
LostMyMarbles 06-21-2005, 12:33 PM What Boone said was: "She's smart and special in a lot of ways."
I think people are reading too much into the word "special"--it's certainly vague praise and could be taken many ways (including disparagingly). It might be something a brother caught in a love-hate relationship might say. But I don't see any evidence to point to any sort of supernatural powers.
But with this show, you never know.

Prior Exodus, I probably would have been leaning towards no.* Considering we haven't really gotten any evidence of any particular talents of the Walt-variety from Shannon.* *
But then Walt gave her his beloved Vincent.
Maybe it was just Walt being sympathetic to her pain, it's easy to think that considering what Walt says and Shannon just losing Boone (Walt lost his mother and Vincent helped him through that).* But then it's *Walt* and the simplistic answer doesn't always mesh with him.* There's something off about him, Vincent and their connection.* Maybe Walt had some specific reason to give Vincent to Shannon, beyond sympathy?* He mentions Vincent could "protect her".* Did Walt possibly feel something was going to happen or might happen to Shannon where she might need Vincent's protection?* Why would she need protection?* Unless she's possibly 'special' in her own way too, thus another potential target of the Others.

Or like the way the special Locke instantly bonded with the special Walt...perhaps Walt just got a "special" feeling from Shannon. The special people's vibe!
LockeLove 06-21-2005, 02:50 PM I thought he meant she was special to be sarcastic. As in she's too special to help anyone but herself.
Boone didn't sound sarcastic. At all.
We've discussed this topic to death in the N.A.I.L.S. thread. Personally, I think there's something "special" about Shannon and it's Walt's kind of special. I don't think it's to the extent of Walt's "abilities" and her "specialness" may not be exactly the same as Walt's, but I think it might be there. I HOPE it's there. More Shannon = Happy theG

I have always wondered about this. These are the only two people named 'special' , and we have seen Walts 'special' stuff. Will we ever have an explanation to this comment by Boone ? Hopefully..
But with this show, you never know.
Exactly.
Alden 07-08-2005, 10:36 AM It sounds like an offhand comment, but the writers are responsible for every line of dialogue. Which means the writers didn't think we'd pounce on the use of special and used it normally, or we' ve got a cool clue bout Shannon.

Resurrecting this discussion now that MoSMoF has come and gone. There are a number of threads around the 'Lage now pondering whether or not Shannon may indeed be "special" or if it's possibly an off-shoot due to her connection with Vincent/Walt (designated Vincent's caretaker by Walt tied her into the connection somehow? Almost like a contract?).
Truthfully, right now, I'm leaning towards all the Lostaways as "special" in one way or another, but it seems to be showing itself more prominently in Locke, Walt, Claire (also maybe Aaron), Shannon and also possibly Sawyer and Sayid (both heard the whispers).
Alden 10-06-2005, 01:53 PM Don't forget Jack and his DaddySpirit.
Sesostris 12-02-2005, 11:14 AM Since I didn't feel this question was really answered in her flashback (in that it wasn't, I'd suppose the final answer would lean towards the negative)... however, after watching "Abandoned" and the persisting backwards-speaking!Walt visions - which Sayid shared just before her death - do you think Shannon still might have been special? Why was Shannon the only one who could see Walt (prior Sayid seeing him, of which Shannon seemed the catalyst for him)? Was Walt sending her the images or something else?
Is there a possible tie with Jack seeing his father, Shannon (and Sayid) seeing Walt and Kate (and Sawyer) seeing the black horse?
mrstater 12-02-2005, 12:46 PM I've been thinking about this, too. Could "specialness" somehow be transferred between people? What if Walt is the only truly "special" person on the island, but since he's gone, he transfers that to Shannon, who transfers it to Sayid, now that she's gone.
The difference with Sawyer and Kate is...the horse seemed to be real, didn't it? Kate touched it. But then again, who's to say Walt wasn't touchable?
