View Full Version : Various questions and concerns about the new board

These are just some concerns I have...and some questions I would like answered.

1. The subscription feature SEEMS good...because you can unsubscribe, but you will have to go find every single thread you've ever posted on and REsubscribe to them...if you want to see new replies to threads you've posted in (I've made this point before, I just wanted to re-iterate it)

2. The reputation button is an invitation to bash people. As many others have stated, I think it should be disabled.

3. The signatures appear huge and it's difficult to figure out how to adjust the size. They mesh with the rest of the post and aren't distinguished from it.

4. Do we have to lock group ships at 250 anymore? I only ask because it's been a tradition with DIMPLES to name each new thread and give a new theme. And if we're going to be stuck in the current one forever on the new board....I'd just kind of a like a heads up.

5. The private message box says you are only allowed 100 private messages. Now I don't know if that's true...but I've got 950+ right now and I'm not deleting them. So when the new board switches...will I lose them all? - it was mentioned elsewhere that this board was not meant to have people save that many...but that's how many I was sent and I just haven't deleted them. I didn't really know I was supposed to. I never delete any of my e-mails on hotmail or yahoo :-\

6. Will there be a feature which allows you to see the most recent posts made on the board? like like "show unread posts" feature here?

7. The last time the new board was up...I had to resave my avatars in a new format in order to use most of them...is this still the case?

And I would like to clarify that when I posted this list in the "MODIFY" group, I never intended for my concerns to be adressed there :) That group is only for the petition purposes...I fully intended to raise my concerns here :)

Yep and answered in other threads

2. The reputation button is an invitation to bash people. As many others have stated, I think it should be disabled.

Good to know. Or what if we disabled the negative points?

3. The signatures appear huge and it's difficult to figure out how to adjust the size. They mesh with the rest of the post and aren't distinguished from it.

That is all font size I guess, I have changed the size for the default. Does it look better?

4. Do we have to lock group ships at 250 anymore? I only ask because it's been a tradition with DIMPLES to name each new thread and give a new theme. And if we're going to be stuck in the current one forever on the new board....I'd just kind of a like a heads up.

I didn't know you had to lock them at 250 before? We tended to break threads up that got too large (large threads put strain on the server) but I don't remember anything ever HAVING to be locked before.

5. The private message box says you are only allowed 100 private messages. Now I don't know if that's true...but I've got 950+ right now and I'm not deleting them. I didn't really know I was supposed to. I never delete any of my e-mails on hotmail or yahoo* :-\

On the test board you have 1600+ total now according to the board stats. Are they all there for you now? You can also try out the download feature so you can save them all.

6. Will there be a feature which allows you to see the most recent posts made on the board? like like "show unread posts" feature here?

There is a link in your User CP, it says something like "There has been 11 new posts and 0 new threads since your last visit.
( Get New Posts ) " and you can click the get new posts or on the main menu bar there is a link for "New Posts"

7. The last time the new board was up...I had to resave my avatars in a new format in order to use most of them...is this still the case?

I wasn't aware that was an issue before. What format are they in now and what format didn't work on the other board?

And I would like to clarify that when I posted this list in the "MODIFY" group, I never intended for my concerns to be adressed there :) That group is only for the petition purposes...I fully intended to raise my concerns here :)

No worries. I do want to address everyone's concerns so there won't be a need for a petition like that, I just hope everyone comes and lets me know what they have issues with. :)

-Yes the signatures look much better now...thank you very much! ;D

-Yes all my PM's are still there...I guess the 1600 counts PM's in our outbox as WELL as your inbox...lol....I did not realize that. As long as they're not automatically erased I'm fine with it. I have no problem saving them or downloading them...as long as I know I''ll have time to go through my Pm's and figure out what to do with them :)

-Well DIMPLES was the the first group ship to go past 200 pages and we thew a big party at pg 200 and used another 30 pages ;) At around pg. 240 Halfrek warned us that large threads tend to get split...and she told us that we were going to have to lock DIMPLES at 250 and start a new thread...so it didn't split of it's own accord. So we did. Since then we've gone through TWO more 250 pg. ships. We now hold polls to name the new thread...and come up with new themes for each one. It's kind of a tradition.
-Other groups also assume now that they will have to lock their groups at 250 and start a new one. The Jater Couch is approaching 250 and they are getting ready to set-up a new ship as well :)
-I'm just wondering how long the theads will be allowed to get in the new boards...before we have to lock them?

-As for the avatars, Bitmap images didn't work the last time I tried. I believe I had to resave them as "JPG" images through Dell image expert. I know that Bitmap works fine there....so I was just wondering...

Well that might work but don't you think that might spark kind of a popularity contest? You know, whoever has the most "friends" on here gets the most points and therefore gets to look good. I donno. Maybe not.

I agree. It will be a race, just like the number of posts a person has.

Yup..as a person who is really against all polls, awards and games on the 'lage which judge the popularity of posters...I don't think that the reputation button should exist at all

The difference between THAT type of race and the 'who has the most posts' race...is that the posting race doesn't make people feel BAD about themselves. It has nothing to do with someone else's opinion of you...I would assume it's just about stats.

But if people are competing for who has the best reputation...there are always going to be people feeling really crappy because no one cares enough to give them reputation points. The bottom line is that it's still about people judging you.

And I think that detracts from the community spirit.

Oh if you want to keep them at 250, knock yourself out. :) That kind of thing isn't really software related so we can decide anything we want on that. I usually just look at a thread and if it is excessive (20-30 pages) I may or may not split, depends on the mood.

Well I researched that and the developers of vbulletin say ".bmp isn't meant to be an image to be rendered in a browser. I am sure browsers might support it - but try to convert your .bmp file to .gif or .jpg. (it will be smaller in size too!) Although i always thought the software would convert it to a gif or jpg. I will look into it more.

Thanks for answering that :) And I'm sorry to keep at the issue...lol...but it was understood by me and others that the reason we were asked to lock the threads was because they might split on their own without warning or something...lol

And maybe you really don't have an answer for this, but I would just like to know whether you are going to LIMIT group ships to a certain number of pages on the new boards?

I only ask this because dimples is at over 100 pages of it's 4th thread...so combined with the previous 3 threads we would be at almost 900 pages overall right now. ;) On the new board if we reached pg 500 of our thread or something like that...would we be asked to lock it?

Will there be a page limit on the new board for group threads? And if there IS one....would be possibly be able to know what it is at the beginning so that we can plan accordingly :)

Again, sorry for continuing with this line of questioning, I'd just like to clarify :)

We might need to adjust this to a lower page/reply count. On the new board, there seems to be a limit or bug which is causing problems when viewing topics using the Threaded or Hybrid Display modes. My guess would be that there are way too many replies to show their titles on one page (which is the way Hybrid and Threaded Display modes work.

or we could turn off the threaded mode? Got to find out if it is a bug in the software or working as designed.

Someone asked but I don't remember who now about the 30 day cut off for posts to be displayed. In your User CP you can override the forum default. There is an option that says "Default Thread Age Cut Off
You may specify a time period from which to display threads. Threads older than the age you specify will not be shown. " and the different options are there.

Also while looking at that I noticed you can also change the number of posts to show per page so not sure how that will affect the 250 page game if people have changed the number of posts their page displays from the default.

QueenElessar

Ah yes...if you can change that...it will affect it how many pages a thread has for you :)

It's really no problem in the long run about the page numbers...maybe it's not a PAGE question I'm asking then...maybe it's a number of POSTS :-\ ...but surely you won't let threads go on forever?....lol

I guess I'm just asking if you will ask thread starters to start a new thread when the old one gets too large at some point. As I said, DIMPLES would have 900 pages (or around 12,000 posts!) if there was no limit to how large the thread could get :-\

Karri

we probably would request that posters start new threads when their old ones get large, super large threads are hard on the database but if we go through and see that users aren't doing it, depending on the mood, we would just split them. But it is much easier on us if the users do it themselves. ;D

QueenElessar

Exactly :)...so could you possibly give me a rough estimate of how many pages, or since that varies depending on settings, THEN posts...we should shut it down and start a new one at?

I'm soooo sorry...I know I sound like a broken record...but it would be nice if we had a number to go by...because all the groups have been using 250 pages at this point (based on Halfrek's original reccomenation to DIMPLES). It makes sense if all the groups have to shut down at the same point, so that there's no compeition for who can carry on their thread the longest or whatever. :)

Also will it be the same format as this one? meaning we lock the thread...but we can still read it whenever we want?
