I thought it was interesting, knowing what we know now, to see the way that Jin treated Sun in TR. The justaposition of his harsh words and kind gestures, echoing who he once was and the man that he has become.

One moment he was disappointed in her for getting dirty and ordering to clean herself up and then a second later saying "I love you", in a softer tone of voice and a loving look. And even more interesting, perhaps, to see Sun's lack of reaction to the second.

In light of everything that we know about there past, I see this as his internal struggle to continue protecting her and trying to live by their customs juxtaposed with the softer, more innocent man that first fell in love with her. I wonder if this is one of the first times that he is able to relax just a bit, not worry about her father or being followed and let his guard down, when he leans over and moves the hair off her face while she is asleep .. you can really see that he loves her and cares about her in that moment.

Actually - I took the "you're all dirty" as a way of getting Sun to stop doing the manual labor of searching for his luggage. I think he thought doing something like that was beneath her. It came out harse sounding (to us). And he tempered it with an "I love you."

I, too, thought this scene was very interesting when I rewatched the episode last night.*

It made me kind of sad to see Sun's reaction to Jin telling her he loved her.* Hindsight being 20/20 and all, I knew that he really meant it, and was bummed to see that she didn't seem to quite believe it in that moment.

autumnfire - I love your sig line.

I think the look on her face had less to do with not believing him and more with wondering whether or not she wanted his love anymore.

Also, if she hadn't chosen to follow him (for love) she'd not be on the island.

it made me a little sad for them both, too, when she just blankly looked at him after the "i love you"
the idea that it was his way of getting her to stop searching around is interesting. i really hadn't thought of that option. it's sure possible, because we now know that he really does love her. actually i believed that ll along, but at this point after watching it the FIRST time around, i wasn't sure if i liked him or not.

just the way he reacted with claire made me see something in him. a reason to not believe the harshness that was coming out of him. also when he cried in the bathroom, and how he got to marry her. what he sacrificed. Paik said he was sacrificing his dreams easily. Jin said Sun was his dream. but then he sacrificed that as well to please her father. it's sad. mirror for the mirror thread? i htink so!
