Naughty Paws 06-20-2005, 11:23 PM ohhhhhhh* myyyyyy.* a plane AND a helicopter. Search resumes for missing plane and helicopter By JEFFREY GOLD Associated Press Writer June 20, 2005, 11:23 AM EDT NEWARK, N.J. -- Authorities resumed searching Monday for a small plane that disappeared after taking off from a rural airstrip in northwest New Jersey, as well as for a home-built helicopter that was missing in the southern part of the state. The single-engine plane disappeared from radar while flying over the hilly woodlands near Sussex Airport about 7:30 a.m. Sunday, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Only the pilot was believed to be aboard. The search had been suspended about 9 p.m. Sunday. The helicopter went missing Sunday afternoon when it did not arrive for an expected refueling at Hammonton Airport in Atlantic County with two aboard, state police Trooper Stephen Jones said. It had taken off from an airfield in Elmer, Salem County, he said. State police were coordinating the search in Sussex County, using a helicopter and marine units on lakes in the area, Jones said. Several police departments were participating, using all-terrain vehicles. The Cessna 182 left Sussex Airport for Sikorsky Memorial Airport in Stratford, Conn., after its pilot got FAA clearance, officials said. The plane was only 4 miles south of the airport, in the Hardyston Township area, when radar showed the pilot starting to turn back and then the aircraft disappeared, the FAA said. Aboard the helicopter were the pilot, Thomas Navickas, 61, whose hometown in Florida was not immediately available, and Christian Gafke, 34, of New Orleans, Jones said. AND BEFORE THAT!!!! two separate helicopters crashed into the river this past week.* within like a mile of the airport.* it's getting eerie here guys....Montauk....Philadelphia...and Montauk's next door to me. In Friday's incident, a Sikorsky S76C copter took off from the East 34th Street helipad at 4:38 p.m. The copter was returning the men to New Castle, Del., near MBNA's headquarters, but it barely got off the ground. Witnesses said it rose 15 to 20 feet, with the pilot struggling to keep it airborne, then dipped, rose a bit, then crashed near East 38th Street. "We saw it go down, and the water sucked it right in," said one witness, Jimmy Collins, 18. "It was only 50 feet from shore." It wasn't immediately clear what caused the crash, but it appeared to be remarkably similar to the Tuesday afternoon accident in which a Bell 206L Long Ranger barely made it off Pier 6 near Wall Street before nose-diving into the river. That helicopter carried six foreign tourists and a pilot, all of whom were rescued by police.
