So does anyone think that the marshall and kate used to be involved romantically?

Nah, I think that guy was just a sadistic jerk who got off on busting her chops. Though, I do wonder what favor she was about to ask him for....

I think he had a thing for her, yes. He seems to confirm it when he says to Jack, "So she got to you, too?"

Maybe she tried to escape/stay free by offering him sex/love/whatever he wanted. ("She'll do anything.") Or maybe he was pursuing her for a long time, and developed an obsession for her. But there was something about the dynamic between them that seemed very personal.

Cheers,
Templeton

I think the favour was to give the reward of her capture to the farmer.

Wouldn't the Farmer already get it? He turned her in.

Yeah I just rewatched this episode and the fact that she was asking the marshall to make sure the farmer got the reward struck me as odd. I mean I have no idea if our government stiffs people on tis or not but it seemed weird...made me wonder if the marshall is a bounty hunter.

I actually wasn't surprised Kate wanted the farmer to get the reward. True, his intentions were to turn her in, but I felt that he really understood her. I think it meant a lot to her when he said that everyone deserves a fresh start. Also, he did feed and pay her for three months in exchange for work so I can kinda see why she'd want him to have the money.

It seems Kate uses men romantically to get what she needs. She puts on the old Katie charm as a means to an end.
I don't think the Marshal was a marshal at all but posing as one. He said something to the effect of "you don't look free to me" I think she, like some of the other lostaways, is being controlled by someone and "the marshal" works for that person. If he doesn't work for the govornment or if he's a bounty hunter he there would be no reward for Ray. So I would assume there is money behind his mission in that he could give Ray the money anyways.

This is in some way a parallel to Jin and the hawaiian shirt guy. He said Jin was not free and we already know Jin is being controlled by someone with money. Just MHOP :)

Dont know if they were involved romantically, but they are related somehow. Remember in Exodus 1, in their flashback he said "she would call me at home..." How would she have the HOME PHONE # of the man assigned to track her down and bring her in? That would be like Harrison Ford calling Tommy Lee Jones in The Fugitive.

If not romantically, i think related through family. A step-brother? Her mom was freaked in the hospital when she saw her. Maybe her Step-brother... who is a US Marshall, given the case because he knows her, will be easier to track her down. She knows his home#, calls him to argue her case, persuade him to not look for her ...but he has a job to do.

Just an opinion.

there was definitely an intimacy between them. whether it was romantic or
family-- heck if I know.

maybe HE was the reason she wanted to leave home from a young age.

older brother who abused her(stepbro?) cousin?

I only know that he always seems sinister, while Kate seems likable.
