View Full Version : Shaving
Starlet 12-16-2004, 01:46 AM I don't know if this has been mentioned or not already, and forgive me if this is such a silly topic, but I was watching the show today and they, of course, panned over Shannon's body as she was getting a tan. I was like, "Hmm, I wonder if she uses Venus..." But it got my wondering...they probably found some razors in suitcases, but eventually they'll run out. And the men are getting more stubbly. I'm not wishing that the actresses get all hairy themselves just to make the show more believeable, that's just gross....Perhaps I was just thinking about what it'd actually be like trapped on an island. At some point, would I even care about shaving?
Just wondering if anyone else thought about that...(as ridiculous as that was :P )
fmith 12-16-2004, 06:21 AM Actually, I've thought about that as well. There are other hygenic issues that I've been thinking about too, and I think that because it's television, the "hair problem" is not going to be cleared up anytime soon. For example, I know from experience that washing one's clothing in salt water is not a good idea, and neither is washing one's body, hair, etc. I assume that since there is a supply of fresh water now, the castaways use that, but for the first few episodes I was definitely trying to figure that out.
I'm not wishing that the actresses get all hairy themselves just to make the show more believeable, that's just gross....
Well, technically, it's natural.
WhiteSapphire 12-16-2004, 11:03 AM Perhaps I was just thinking about what it'd actually be like trapped on an island. At some point, would I even care about shaving?
Have you ever gone camping for an extended period of time (more than one night)? For the first night, I feel totally gross. No showering, no shaving. Ick. The second night, I'm a little better. By the third night, I've revelling in my newfound freedom. It's actually quite liberating.
Of course, as soon as you get back to civilization, you realize how gross you actually are and run very quickly to the showers. Or maybe that's just me.
Anyway, I think I read a comment somewhere that this is a TV show, so the women (or men) won't be getting extra hairy, Hurly won't be slimming down to a 32-waist anytime soon, etc. Now if this were "Survivor" . . . well, if this were "Survivor," I wouldn't be watching it anyway.
Speaker 12-16-2004, 11:09 AM just some FYI....women shaving body hair came about back during the first world war.....all the men were away and the razor industry lost a TON of money...so they paid a famous actress to shave her body hair and made it a trend practically over night.
And today people find unshaven women gross....
All because of some stupid company wanting money....
My soul is crying.
WhiteSapphire 12-16-2004, 11:13 AM And today people find unshaven women gross....
Don't worry; the French are still holding out.
(No offense to anyone; just my personal observations.)
willow 12-16-2004, 11:16 AM Well actually I find it more funny that Jack and Sawyer still look as if they'd shaved three days ago while Charlie looks more and more like a bearded seaman... ::)
Ophelia 12-16-2004, 11:23 AM If I were on an island, I would still care about at least my under arms. Whats nastier than waving over your hot male friend and seeing buckwheat in a headlock underneathe your arms? Not attractive. And with smelling like sasquatch, looking like Danielle and no makeup or perfume, your gonna want to have something going for ya.
And personally, for the men, hairier the better. I find Charlie sexier and sexier every week with that beard of his. Facial hair is love. :-*
kaidysoft 12-16-2004, 11:25 AM damn Speaker, that was one of the most intelligent things *you have told me that wasn't comic/sciFi/tv related...you ROCK.
And, although I did know that (my bestfriend is a non-shaver, so I have heard it all!), I still have to shave legs/pits regularly - can't stand the feel of stubble touching stubble...even with winter, I am crazy about it...the BF never minds...lol
re: Camping - sheesh, I have been to festivals for 5 days with no shower, no shaving, no shampooing - you start to look a mess, but then again, so does everyone else...and if you are lucky, there is a creek/lake/pool to "bathe" in...lol
Baby wipes are excellent all-around baths...use them to wash up, or as a lube to shave without water (sensitive ppl beware - however, I don't even have to use gel/cream when I am at home...just water...) - and for those *winks* other areas - it's really nice to stay clean!

WhiteSapphire 12-16-2004, 11:32 AM can't stand the feel of stubble touching stubble...even with winter, I am crazy about it...the BF never minds...lol
Well, that's the thing. Once you get past the stubble stage, it becomes less bothersome. The only problem is getting past that stage.
I knew a lot of people in college who stopped shaving. I always thought it looked weird when they wore skirts or something, but, hey, it would significantly decrease my getting ready time. Stupid societal norms! They are keeping me down!
Oh, and I almost forgot, baby wipes are amazing things. I heartily support the bath by baby wipes. ;)
Speaker 12-16-2004, 11:33 AM yeah i think shaved legs and pits are sexy....but i don't think it shoudl be a societal norm...should be a choice.....but it's difficult to choose not to with the way we've been conditioned.
Sherry 12-16-2004, 01:02 PM I just prefer my smooth skin over hairy...now about 15 years ago at basic training for the Air Force (yes, I'm in the service, shhh, nobody else needs to know), I went 3 weeks without shaving my legs. Showers were short and not so sweet so we decided to have a contest to see who could grow the longest hair (all together now - EWWWW!). Well our TI found out and needless to say we all spent the afternoon with a razor. :lol2: BTW - I wasn't winning...
Merry 12-16-2004, 01:23 PM Don't worry; the French are still holding out.

I'm sorry, what do you mean by that? I'm not offended but WTH?
WhiteSapphire 12-16-2004, 01:25 PM I'm sorry, what do you mean by that? I'm not offended but WTH?
That French women don't necessarily shave (arms or legs). Actually, it's the French that are most known for it, but I've seen it all over Europe. This whole hairless women image is largely still an American ideal, though it's beginning to cross the Atlantic, especially with younger women.
Merry 12-16-2004, 01:33 PM Well I'm sorry but that's so not true! I'm French and I can tell you that we almost never see women who do not shave! :o
People in my country have the same vision concerning women's hair. Girls start doing it when they're like, 14 and keep doing it after that. And older (I don't mean very old but older than young women) do it too. Maybe it was true in the past but now there are wax, cream and razors here too! :lol2:
(How weird is this conversation?)
WhiteSapphire 12-16-2004, 01:39 PM Well I'm sorry but that's so not true! I'm French and I can tell you that we almost never see women who do not shave!* :o

Yes, this is very weird.
Like I said, I didn't mean to offend. I knew I was going to get into trouble making over-generalizations. :blushing:
Anyway, just to clear this up, my experiences have come from mostly meeting small-town people, and generally older (40+)people didn't shave. They just didn't start out shaving when they were younger, so they didn't feel the need for it. I've seen similar things in Italy, with people who don't live in major cities.
themarvelousmattyd 12-16-2004, 01:50 PM I used to go to college with a girl that didn't shave her legs (or wears skirt/shorts) after columbus day... She would shave again in April or so, but by then her legs were so manly looking that you wouldn't believe that her legs belonged to her upper body... (and yes she had black hair, ugh)

Yeah you're probably right, urban people are more influenced by media and all that stuff...
I'm not offended btw ;)
WhiteSapphire 12-16-2004, 01:54 PM I'm not offended btw* ;)
Glad to hear it! :lol2:
Irish Red 12-16-2004, 01:58 PM Well, just my two cents, but Claire seems from a well-to-do lifestyle, so maybe she gets waxed? I had a roommate who got her legs waxed and she only had to do it once a month or so...
desertislandgirl 12-16-2004, 05:32 PM Seriously, shaving was one of my first thoughts about the show. We saw Locke shaving with a straight razor. Shannon found her bag in the pilot, so I'm sure she had a venus and some extra blades in there. My guess is they can all stay as clean shaven as they want for while - should be plenty of disposable razors on board. I know that if I personally were stranded on a desert island, I'd be looking for a razor right away! so kudos to the company that came up with women shaving, because I'd hate to think about not. ick. ick. ick.
They guys - well, it's more sexy than gross for a guy to not shave every day (IMHO) so - my guess is you'll see more stubble.
I read that salt water is actually great for shaving, so they should be good for a while...
AnnieBW 12-16-2004, 09:55 PM Er... you do know that guys can shave by using a knife and some water. It's shown frequently in old Westerns. It's not exactly safe, but if you're really desperate, it can be done. And Shannon, well, the little princess probably confiscated all of the razors in the luggage just so she could keep her legs stubble-free! :lol2:
Starlet 12-17-2004, 03:18 AM Heh, thanks all who've answered so far. :)
Yeah, I've gone camping before. I know what you mean. And I didn't know the history of women shaving before!
Anyways, I agree with the pits thing, but I guess if I was wearing long pants I'd be okay. And, even though the don't show it, there's probably mosquitos there, so better to cover up in the forest. So I guess Kate might not be shaving and we'd never know! (She's the only gal I've seen with pants, or so I can remember...)
kaidysoft 12-17-2004, 09:25 AM Well, this thread has lasted WAY LONGER than I expected...lol
To add to my former confessional...I have went as long as 6 months without shaving my legs (can't do the pits, sorry) and once you get past the stubble, it's fine...til the hairs start gettin snagged in your socks/pants (don't know how you guys do it - ouchy!) and your legs get all itchey...and then, it's time to shave em. I was in a contest with some friends my freshman year of college - 6 of us...one girl only lasted 4 hours...forgot she had a big date! I ended up winning on day 17...my best friend at the time, she finally freaked and I caught her sneaking back from the showers...so I won!
Incidentally, my bestest friend now, she didn't shave the first 6 years I knew her. She finally shaved her pits one summer cause she said it was too hot...and then she started shaving her legs once in a while - for special occassions where she wears shorter skirts (she will wear shorts/skirts with the hairy legs, but not like to a wedding or church or something). Her fiance doesn't mind...he thinks her buckwheat in a headlock pits are funny...lmao

Starlet 01-18-2005, 01:05 AM I noticed on pics of the guys at the Golden Globes that they're really starting to let their beards go. Ian has a hairy neck! And yet, still, Shannon had perfectly shaven legs last Wednesday...
Merry 01-18-2005, 01:47 AM well, if Shannon has tweezers, she can remove all the hair she wants.
Except for the translation bit, it's not like she has much to do anyway! :lol2:
But I really don't know how Kate manages to have hairless armpits, she's always hunting/picking fruits/arguing-flirting with Jack/Sawyer
