a tornado ripped thru my town yesterday in Eastern Long Island, NY, pulling out huge trees and throwing them around. Live power lines were all over, peoples cars were smushed, etc. hail the size of quarters and massive rain...looked like Kansas. All before i got home from work. WTF Getting a tornado here is like finding a giant squid in the Long Island Sound.

Wow! :eek2:

We get them here in Virginia but they are usually F0s and the most they do is knock over trees.

Naughty Paws I live in NYC and I guess it's hard for people to understand how rare a tornado is in this part of the world. I hope you and yours are okay/

wow, thanks for the concern!

tornados are one weather event that scares the crap outta me.

this one was small, of course, mimicing a really really bad thunder and lightning storm (which was the warning we got). i guess it just happened outta no where, here you cant see it coming because most of the land is not open. no one expects it.

Islip residents thought they got one too, but the weather ppl are saying it wasnt a tornado just a really bad storm that looked like one there.

when i see pics of the real ones in the mid-country it scares me. they are just overwhelming to even ponder. those and very large tidal waves or tsunamis.

sometimes i see tornado chasers on the discovery channel or similar and to see the real thing leaves me speechless. i think i'd have a feeling of helplessness and despair if i lived in the open country and saw this huge thing headed my way. you just cannot predict anything...the path, if it will just go away, or when it will finally touch ground. very scary, i could never live in that region where all those tornados pop up all the time.

most ppl have electricity back, some still out.

i was impressed that mine was only out 9 hours. the ppl down the block never lost theirs. lol
now, like usual, i am headed to the sunny beach :p

Very glad to hear you & yours are okay and that you didn't suffer too much property damage.

Here in northern New England tornadoes and "microbursts" (almost-tornadoes) are extremely rare, but they happen. A microburst ripped through my neighborhood about 7 years ago and it looked like someone had thrown grenades around in everyone's yard--trees were smashed through roofs, cars were crushed, phone & power lines were down for quite a while. Even after the cleanup it was weird, because all of these houses which had been tucked into forested lots surrounded by trees were now sitting in muddy open clearings. Scary.
