View Full Version : Ethan Breathing
CharliesHoodie 08-16-2005, 01:10 PM When Charlie and Hurley burry Ethan, the camera does a close up on the body and you can see Ethan breathing, barely.
Was this just a blooper or signs of things to come?

This has been discussed extensively since the episode aired. Some say the body was breathing, others say it was the wind...I've re-watched the scene and IMO he was definitely breathing.
As to what it means, that's unclear...as I've said before, I think it must have been filmed intentionally for us to see it, because why pay somebody to lie in a tarp when a dummy would have been cheaper and wouldn't breathe at the wrong time? Yet I do believe Ethan is dead, dead as a doornail, gone for good, pushing up daisies. Farewell Ethan, we hardly knew ye...come back and see us in a flashback sometime, you devil you.
Knowing as they do the way we fans love to speculate, and how we catch every minute detail and debate it to death, I think it was the writers' way of having a little fun with us. That was probably JJ Abrams making a cameo appearance in the tarp, taking deep rhythmic breaths and giggling to himself at how we're all speculating about it!
Mads13 08-17-2005, 01:08 AM As much as I love the idea of Ethan breathing and/or coming back, I'm going with the wind on this one. The shirt looked a little too "flappy" when it was moving. But then again, remember how Hurley said he thought this would end? Why would they make him say something like that?
Hmmmmmmmmm:twisted:
CharliesHoodie 08-17-2005, 12:24 PM I really wish J.J. would come out and tell us if it was a blooper or not so we all don't go crazy!

Where's the fun in that for him? ;)
CharliesHoodie 08-17-2005, 05:30 PM lol!
Still. It frustrates me.

Yeah, me too. Take a number, the line forms to the right.
liz_lost_fan 09-13-2005, 07:41 PM I don't think it was a blooper, cuz all they would need to do is edit it out...seriously, think about it, they had him entirely wrapped up, so, they could've just put a dummy in there, or had him hold his breath for 2 seconds. and, look at the angle of the camera, that is the weirdest scene, totally uneccisary, they did it liek that for a reason...
Captain Mustapha 09-14-2005, 08:21 AM Season 2 - Ethan: AHHHH-CHOO!!! (dirt moves)
sportbronco 09-17-2005, 04:16 PM well Ethan is in the new TV show THRESHOLD on CBS and is doing a GREAT ! GREAT ! GREAT ! job.
He is as scary or even scarier than he was on LOST. Now whether or not he has a contract with CBS and cannot come back to an ABC show, I dont know. But I would like to see him again on LOST !
If you happen to read this William, you are doing great on your new show man, keep up the good work !
John_Locke 09-17-2005, 10:20 PM Charlie put at least 5 9mm bullets into his body, at close range. Most of these bullets it seemed, was to the chest.
This means, if he is in any way natural in a "flesh and bones" way, his lungs and heart along with ribcage would most certainly be shattered.
liz_lost_fan 09-17-2005, 10:22 PM I want him to come back :(

I couldn't agree more, William was absolutely amazing in Threshold last night. The guy just rocks.
As of now, unfortunately, he's not signed up to do more Threshold eps...that may (I hope I hope I hope) change in the future. He's free to work on any show/network he pleases (and is filming a guest spot on an NBC show now). I'm still holding out hope they'll bring him back for Claire/Charlie flashbacks to resolve the whole kidnapping story arc.
liz_lost_fan 09-17-2005, 11:22 PM I hope so...I want him back :(

They'll have to explain this eventually right? I think he'll be back for those flashbacks in the first half of the season.

From your mouth to JJ's ears. :)
BurningStar4 09-21-2005, 01:13 PM I just watched this episode the other day and Ethan is definitely breathing - they could of just put a dummy in the fabric since we never see the face, so why pay the actor? Because he was supposed to be breathing! It was subtle enough that if you weren't really focussing in on the TV too much, you'd probably miss it. I actually missed this scene when it aired on TV, I think all I did was look down to butter a piece of bread haha (I know I was eating dinner) and I missed it. Also, Hurley is joking about Ethan coming back to life, and I think we're supposed to take it as a joke obviously, but I think there is some foreshadowing to that as well.
lostwithoutlost 09-21-2005, 05:27 PM When it aired I thought he was breathing. Now, in the descriptions of tonights episode it has been said that Claire or Shannon (not sure which) runs into a "familiar face" in the jungle. Could it be Ethan?
BarbieDoll 09-21-2005, 06:08 PM I would love to see Ethan come back!!! He sure did cause alot of sleepless nights for me though!!! Just to look at him creeps me out. LOL

From what I have read the familiar face is:
Walt
BarbieDoll 09-21-2005, 06:21 PM Thank you Jazzy J!!! I was going to post it but I don't know how to highlight the spoilers yet. LOL
shanzy288 09-24-2005, 01:13 AM ethan is on Threshold tonight and looks exactly the same. he's got that same crazy look in his eyes
Shrooms 10-03-2005, 07:59 PM Erm... I think I missed the part with them burrying him... What disc is it on on the dvds?
Baileysdad 10-03-2005, 08:02 PM Of course...this plays into the leaked "Scripts" about zombies in future episodes or the Island's healing powers. Perhaps a cameo isn't out of the question.

It's one of the scenes in "Outlaws" I believe, the episode after "Homecoming." Hurley & Charlie dispose of Ethan's body (mostly wrapped in a tarp) by burying him, and share some of the funniest morbid dialogue on the show.
pengbear 10-03-2005, 10:19 PM I think he's breathing...Just because there is no reason for them to have that particular camera angle unless they wanted you to see he was still breathing.
Maybe he's shacked up with Danielle somewhere and they're having crazy monkey love or something.
Shrooms 10-04-2005, 08:39 PM Alright! I'm going to go check it out! Thanks so much! I'll post what I think as soon as possible!
Family of Lost Freaks 10-04-2005, 08:50 PM Funny - I didn't notice the breathing part of it, but both my daughter and I noticed that it was a really odd shot - of the body and background, sunset, etc. Then she said "did you see the hand sticking out?" We both thought it was very odd and almost like there was something else going on that we might not be aware of.
Maybe if these people are experiments as some theories have suggested, there might be some kinda immortality associated with the medicine (ie the shot Desmond took in his arm . . . ?)
Total speculation and didn't even think of it til I read this post.

Logic would dictate that 6 9mm rounds would do any person in. But now we have to wonder why 70 people survived a 35,000ft free fall in a mangled wreck of a plane? We should consider the mysteries of the island are at play here.

I agree here I think we were ment to see this happen. Not much on this show happens by "accident". Monkey Love....too funny....

This has been my argument for some time now...that they would have used a mannequin under the tarp if they hadn't wanted us to see Ethan breathing. However, that doesn't mean changes for Ethan necessarily; it could just mean that the powers-that-be on the show get their giggles by playing with us like this.

Your argument makes sense. It would of course be cruel and unusual punishment for the producers to mess with us this way. Maybe it was done just to keep their options open. Because when I saw him breath I jumped out of my chair in with that WTF look on my face:surprise: . There has been discussion about the actor being a regular on Theshold. But that seems to have been a small roll. Who is to say that our favorite creepy bad guy wont be back.....

The Threshold role was for the two-hour pilot (which was great, and pt. 1 repeats this Friday night!)...and William could come back, but he hasn't been booked to come back yet. If Threshold or Lost wants him back there's always the possibility, but with so many roles currently on his plate (http://www.williammapotheronline.com/news.html) they'll need to work out the scheduling soon, and carefully!

William is a good actor. I say this because in his two recent rolls in Lost and Threshold he has scared the crap out of me. Its funny whats at the end of his last name ,Mapother. Hmmmmmmm
S. A. Bonasi 10-30-2005, 02:33 PM Ethansgirl, if the first part of the pilot aired this past Friday, does that mean that the second part will be airing this upcoming Friday? I don't watch Threshold, but if Mr. Mapother is on it, I'll try to catch the episode if I can.
Anyway, I just rewatched that scene from "Outlaws" (twice!), and I'm going to have to say that Ethan was definitely breathing. Now, whether this is because Ethan will ultimately become God's Friggen Gift to the Undead or just because even the talented Mr. Mapother has to breathe remains to be seen.
But hey, he almost has to be back if only for when they clairify the Claire kidnapping thing.

Sadly no--it's sweeps month so we're in for first-run, William-free episodes of Threshold for a few weeks. The repeat the other night was for the benefit of what could have been another world series game (when nobody wants to waste a new episode). If the show gets the full-season pickup I suspect we may get to see pt.2 of the pilot repeated after sweeps.

I'm pretty positive that wasn't William in the tarp. :) I doubt they'd have paid to keep him in Hawaii and on the show just to show his hand onscreen. It obviously was a human stand-in though, so that makes me think the breathing was deliberate--a joke or a clue, who knows?
But hey, he almost has to be back if only for when they clairify the Claire kidnapping thing.
Amen!!!! I'll be so PO'd if they drop it!!! Give me some flashbacks and explain that whole thing!

I agree. He will be back in flashbacks. The producers need to conclude the Clair kidnapping thing. But that breathing thing bothers me. I kind of hope that it was on purpose. It would be nice to see him on what happening on the island NOW!!!!!!!!
