Once, I guess I was just too stupid to use an oven mit, and I went to get something out of the oven with a DISH TOWEL and it caught on fire! I freaked out and threw it down, and the fire went out, but I poured water everywhere just to be safe.

I had one of those microwavable TV dinners and so I put it in the microwave right? Well then the phone rang and I ended up staying on there for a like a half an hour until I heard a bang from the kitchen and found out my dinner had exploded in the microwave...lol

When I was around 12 I was baking an apple pie and didnt read right and put in 1/4 cup of salt, not a 1/4 teaspoon. It confused me at the time, but hey, the receipe called for it. Awful

I haven't had the pleasure of lighting anything on fire...

Oh my lots and lots.

I tried to fry on my stove and it caught the stove on fire.
I tried to slice an apple to cook with and sliced my thumb wide open.
I used 3 bulbs of garlic instead of 3 cloves of garlic. (I told my folks that my dog liked the smell, but they told my that the dog also liked to roll around in s***t).
I baked a pie and the crust took at least 3-4 hours to cook. (My dad ate a piece of it when the crust wasn't quite cooked yet).
I've burned several frying pans.

Well as far as a cooking faux paux (?) I cannot seem to make fried chicken. I always burn it. I got some pointers from some older ladies at work so I'll give it one more try, otherwise I'm done with fried chicken! It's not exactly healthy for you anyways!

When I was 13 I was boiling a kettle of water on the stove and when I went to pick it up the handle broke off and all the water fell on my foot. By the time I got to the bathroom to run cold water on it I already had one big blister on the top of my foot that covered the entire top of my foot up to the front of my ankle. Yes it was only one blister. I had third degree burns on that foot and couldn't walk on it for two weeks. Oddly enough, because I kept the blister in tact, I didn't get a scar. It also helped that my mom's a nurse and brother was a paramedic, so I always had the best of care for it!
Trust me being burned was FAR more painful than giving birth!

I got distracted once while fixing something in the microwave...ended up leaving the fork in. It didn't ruin the microwave one bit. My dad was in the kitchen with me and caught it before it progressed too much further.

A few weeks ago I was trying to make rice pudding from our Australian cookbook. I had to boil about 2 cups milk, it boiled over the pan, put out our gas stove flame, stunk up the house, and the fire alarm went off. I tried cleaning the area and stupidly I didn't even think about how hot the spot would be. Burnt myself quite bad...never again...

When I was 14, (mind you I cannot cook), I was just being stupid with a friend I had over and we tried to make something in the blender and I took the lid off when it was on, covering the entire kitchen.
When my mom got home, we both stared at each other and said "They did it". I think it was just a few days before Christmas...
My mom didn't like me after that. ;)

Oh, and one time I caught an oven mitt on fire and threw it and caught the drapes on fire...
I guess that was the worse.

I had a casserole overflow in the oven a couple of years ago. I had WAY too much in the pan. It caught fire and ruined my oven.

Mine is a built in, so you have to order them. I ended up having to buy a floor model because it was 3 days before Thanksgiving and I was making dinner for nearly 30 guests!

I've done that. A few years ago during a party at my sorority house, a few of us were wondering if stuff actually flew everywhere if the cover was off when the blender was going.
Much to our amusement, it does fly everywhere. At least you were 14, I was at least 21

I am a kitchen accident waiting to happen. LOL

I just remembered one more - I turn the stove on to cook something and you know those decorative burner covers you put on your burners. Forgot to take those off and burned one up. This is why after living 16 years in my apartment - I've only used my stove/oven maybe 30 times! (I use my microwave most of the time. I can cook almost anything in it. When my last one all of a sudden broke (I was really sick at the time) I thought OMG I won't be able to eat! So I got out of my sick bed to go and buy a new microwave - so I could eat! LOL

I've set a couple of dish towels on fire, but none of my kitchen mishaps can compare to my sister's. She went shopping one day and totally forgot about a large pot of eggs she left boiling on the stove. When she returned home there were two fire trucks parked in front of her house, dozens of firemen milling about on the lawn, her front door had been kicked in, and a stream of water cascaded down the entry stairs. One of the firemen noticed her approach, pointed to a blackened pot lying in the middle of the front yard and yelled,” Your eggs are done!"

You guys are more destructive then I thought!!!

This wasn't really a cooking accident, but a kitchen accident, and it only happened a few hours ago.

I have one of those dishwashers you hook up to your sink and all the dirty water drains out into the sink and down the drain. Well, a few minutes before all the dirty water had to drain out, I had accidently put a glass cup rim down over the drain. So, when the water drained from the dishwasher, it didn't go down the drain but filled up the sink! I went in the kitchen about a half hour later and saw the sink filled! About half a centimeter away from over flowing!

Close one!

Even though I had to dig through all that disgusting water to get to the cup to let the sink drain. Ick.

I blew up the toaster while attempting to toast a piece of bread. True story.

Mine happened today. I was making a Lean Quisine for lunch. I did the initial cooking and then when it was time to remove the plastic film, I pulled on the film and it picked up the bowl, then the plastic ripped off and the bowl fell on the floor splashing in my face and all over me.

When I was a kid, we were latch key kids. My brother and I cooked all the time, but we never cleaned up after ourselves, so we were constanty causing brolier fires. It wasn't a big deal because we knew how to put out the fires. But when I was 8, I had a babysitter for the night. She was cooking dinner and then came running out of the apartment screaming that the kitchen was on fire. So I had to go in and put out the fire. That was the last time I had a babysitter.

When I was learning to cook at age 15, I made Baked Alaska. The recipe said to make it on a wooden board, so I grabbed a masonite board and used that. The Alaska was baked, all right, and the masonite was blackened, smoking and stinky all around it. 36 years later my Mom still loves to tell the tale.

Yep, I've done that too. Quite emabrassing:rolleyes:

I set the microwave on fire with microwave popcorn once:biggrin:

I also gave myself third degree burns on my hand after I accidently tipped a saucepan filled with boiling water and pasta on it. Not fun at all. :(

When I 1st moved into my own apartment, I decided to fry chicken. Instead of buying chicken parts, I got a whole fryer and figured - I'd watched my Mom cut them up a million times, so how hard could it be?
Well - the legs & wings were easy. after that I managed to cut the rest into several unrecognizable parts! But I got it cooked without burning it, & as my Dad used to say...
"It all goes down the same hole!"

I've managed to break 4 automatic can openers. I don't know how. But it's like every time I touch on it craps itself. Those black and decker under the cabinet ones are the worst for me. So I use the old school hand can openers now.

I sliced my index finger cutting carrots, not too bad.

But the funniest one was getting my long hair caught in an electric eggbeater while making cookie dough.

My mom loves to tell that story, too. Why do they love to repeat the story of our mistakes??;)

I wasn't even cooking. My sister was. She was baking some cookies & as she was taking the sheet out of the oven I said something to her. She turned around to answer me & pow, she hit me on the arm w/ the cookie sheet. It burned like hell! That was about 15 years ago & I still have a slight scar from it. Ouch! :frown:

You guys are amazing! At least my accidents all involved actual stoves instead of microwaves!
1) Age 14 asked my mother if I could bake a cake. Thought I could follow a recipe. Unfortunately, my mother had just bought this new fangled flour called "self- rising".....
2) I went to the store after turning off my roast in the dutch oven on top of the stove....or so I thought.
Actually, I had turned it on high. Fortunately, the store was closed so I got home in time to see smoke pourly out the front door. Banged on the nieghbors front door and told them to call fire dept and went in to rescue my dog and cat. Fire dept got there in time to throw pot in yard!
