If the pilot had been played by anyone other than JJ's pal Greg (who would have been too busy on Alias) would he not have been taken by the monster and gone on to become a major character???

In my opinion? I doubt it. I think the character was meant to survive just long enough to share the information about the plane malfunctioning and heading 1000 miles offcourse, and then "introduce" the survivors to the danger and mystery of the monster. Since it was just a short appearance I suspect that's why JJ Abrams chose to use Greg Grunberg.

I dare say you're right. Mind you, if the pilot had survived he might have become an ex officio authority figure and there may have been a three way split between survivors who "follow" Jack, those who "follow" Locke and those who "follow" the pilot. That would have been fun

And I do enjoy Greg Grunberg. I just saw him on a repeat of NYPD Blue.
