Do you think Sun knows that her father is a leader in the Korean mafia? I mean, she had to suspect atleast, when Jin came back all bloody. I think Jin wasn't the only reason she wanted to flee the country, she seemed pretty desperate to leave her life. Any thoughts?

That's a great question, GS! I agree completely that it makes sense for her to have known. Sun is an intelligent, perceptive, resourceful woman so it's hard to imagine that she didn't have any idea of who or what her father was. In HOTRS, Sun tells Jin that they need to flee to America because it was their only chance. Initially, I thought it had to do with the difference in their statuses being a roadblock to her father allowing them to get married. However, her response to Jin saying that he's going to work for her father seems to indicate that there was an additional, underlying issue at stake because she's clearly unhappy about it. I think Sun didn't want Jin to get entangled in her father's world because she knew that he was a good man and she didn't want him getting involved in her father's shady undertakings.

Another indicator is the confrontation between Jin and Sun where she's yelling and asking him what he does for her father which almost felt rhetorical to me. I saw her as asking a question that she was already afraid that she knew the answer to yet didn't really want to hear or know fully. I think she may have been desperate to leave her life when she found Jin because of her father, that she was willing to leave Jin when she thought he was turning into her father and that it was the small reminder of Jin's true nature that kept her from taking that final step.

Thanks Bliss and that's a great point. She didn't look all that stunned when Jin tried to sneak past into the bathroom. I think that encounter was more about Sun trying to figure out what her father was having Jin do. And your right, when Jin proposed, Sun wanted to leave then, which makes it evident that she wanted to flee earlier and was using Jins job status as an excuse to leave. It seems clear that, Sun and Jin may both know equal amounts about her father, but neither knows that the other does, which may not go over well in their marriage. LOL, they need and island counselor, I think. ;)....

I think you hit the nail on the head--their trust issues seem to stem back to that original point which I think makes their love story even more tragic. What would have happened if Sun hadn't just said "You don't know my father" but had said "You don't know my father. He's controlling and kills people who get in his way and if we don't run to America NOW, we will never be free." What would have happened if Jin had told Sun what happened that fateful night and said, "Pack your bags, we're running away tonight because neither one of us can live this way." They could have saved themselves so much heartache and grief. They may have had to struggle financially since they probably would have had to keep a low profile even in the States but they wouldn't have winded up on Doom Island. But we'd miss them then so I suppose it turned out for the best  . Hopefully, we're going to see them move forward in a place of trust in the future(although the poisoning your husband so he won't leave thing might be a small setback in that regard ). I'm crossing my fingers for them though!

I always had the feeling that Sun knew (or at the very least had a pretty good idea) what her did. It appears that he had legitimate businesses which he ran in a pretty corrupt fashion.

Sun may have convinced herself that Jin was working in a legitimate capacity for her father.

Thus the "What do you do for my father?" question when she saw him bloodied.

Her horrified look could have been due to the undeniable realization that Jin was indeed doing corrupt work, rather than legitimate work for her father.

I'd agree with that and you said it much more succinctly lol :) . That's what I was trying to allude to with the "asking a question that she was already afraid that she knew the answer to yet didn't really want to hear or know fully" bit. I do think she was hoping and trying to convince herself that Jin wouldn't be involved in her father's illicit activities and she didn't want to be confronted with evidence to the contrary.
