Great news!* *;D

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) Fast National ratings for Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004

"Lost" bounced back strong Wednesday after facing playoff baseball the past two weeks, helping ABC secure a ratings win for the night. "The West Wing" showed some renewed vigor for NBC, but "Law & Order's" subpar season continued.

ABC averaged an 8.5 rating/13 share in primetime to beat CBS' 7.7/12. NBC was third at 7.3/11. FOX, 4.9/7, took fourth, followed by UPN, 3.0/4, and The WB, 2.4/4.
*
The story was similar among adults 18-49, which ABC won with a 5.1 rating. CBS finished second in the demographic at 4.0, while NBC and FOX tied for third at 3.4. UPN averaged 2.1 and The WB 1.7.

"Lost" scored an 11.4/17 at 8 p.m., its best rating since its premiere. CBS was second for the hour with "60 Minutes," 6.4/10. NBC's "LAX" was third at 5.3/8. "That '70s Show" and "Quintuplets" were fourth for FOX, finishing a few tenths ahead of "America's Next Top Model," 3.7/6, on UPN. "Smallville" averaged 3.1/5 for The WB.

NBC took the lead at 9 p.m. as "The West Wing," 9.0/13, took a big jump from its lead-in. CBS stayed in second with "The King of Queens," 7.5/11, and "Center of the Universe," 6.5/10. The premiere of "Nanny 911" performed reasonably well for FOX with a 5.8/9. "Kevin Hill" kept UPN in fifth, beating The WB's "Jack & Bobby."

After a dip in ratings last week, CBS' "CSI: NY" reclaimed the top spot at 10 p.m. with a 9.6/16. In an upset, ABC's "Wife Swap," 7.7/13, beat "Law & Order," 7.5/13, for second place.

Great news indeed!

I was jazzed about the full season pick up, and now I'm wanting a season 2! Hopefully the ratings will continue to blow the other networks out of the water.

Lost is great and will be show of the year and grab many awards for many of the unique characters on the show. Way to go JJ and crew and to all of the fans and members including my self for watching the show. Give every person a slap on the butt and a big applause. :lol2:

Okay... someone explain something to me, the ratings idiot. How in the world DO they actually come up with these ratings? What in the world do those numbers mean? For example:

"Lost" scored an 11.4/17 at 8 p.m.

So the 11.4 is the rating, right? What does the 17 stand for?

followed by UPN, 3.0/4

And how come different shows/networks have different last numbers too? Aren't they scored on the same basis? No? How are the two numbers in the ratings related?

I mean, I figure that Lost's ratings are GOOD which would explain the mad squeeing I see here, but for once I'd like to actually UNDERSTAND what the heck everybody's squeeing over.

Okay, I've just outed myself as a moron. *feels so stupid now* :'(

Okay... someone explain something to me, the ratings idiot. How in the world DO they actually come up with these ratings? What in the world do those numbers mean? For example:

First the networks should be looking at the Nielsen ratings which is all explained right here: http://www.nielsenmedia.com/whatratingsmean/

this is all I can find right now but I am looking for more information on the numbers. I know the 11.4 is the rating number and the higher the better. and I know the 17 is the share number for the time slot and the higher is the better. But this is all I know at the moment.

Hmmm, yes, that link did help a little... at least now I understand the meaning of "sweeps month". But they didn't really explain what the two little numbers stood for. My guess is it's probably some sort of statisticical distinction. I always thought it was a score/ratio thing, like "11.7 out of 17 people watched this show!"

Ahh. Hmmm.

June - I think it's something like 17 is the number of televisions on at that time and 11.7 is the number on that show? or something..they always confused me.

Hiram-

I'll see your HOT DAWWWWWG! and raise you a OMG WTF OMG OMG OMG!!!!!111!!111!!

Did you all finish reading my post? 11.3 is the rating of the show. I do not know what this number is out of but has nothing to do with the 17.

The 17 is strictly about the share of the time slot. Whether this means how many shows are on at exactly 8:00PM Eastern or all time zones I do not know. Need to research more now. Hopefully this helps this time.

The first number, the "rating", means the percentage of ALL possible TV sets that could have been watching The Moth, i.e. all TV sets that can see ABC. The second number is the "share", which means the percentage of TV sets tuned to The Moth out of all TV sets that WERE ON AT THAT TIME.

These numbers are huge. Not comparable to Superbowl, of course, but still impressive.

Almost identical numbers grabbed by C.S.I. in its rookie year, by the way . . . can you see "Lost: Miami" in the future?

So the first number, 11.7, is the percentage of TV sets that can see ABC. And then the 17 is the percentage of tv sets that actually tuned into the show? I hope I'm right. I get confuzzled on that stuff too.

It's great that the show has steady ratings. What is it around 16-17 million people a week? Great stuff...still looking over my should too.

My What

LilyLove you do understand perfectly now what the numbers mean. I am guessing %17 is somewhere around 15 to 20 million people. Not sure at all though. :lol2:

* Lillylove: I think the first number is the percent share of Households
* watching something at that hour and the second is million(s) of
* households that statistically represents.

* Speaker:* I got everything else, but , what is with the 111?

Lillylove: I think the first number is the percent share of Households
watching something at that hour and the second is million(s) of
households that statistically represents.

No. Both are percentages; see my post above. First one is the percentage of all that could have been watching; second one is the percentage of all who were actually watching telly at that time.

Rating and share.

Google it if you don't trust me ;)

Simple definition of ratings:

The "11" is the actual percentage of available viewers in the total universe: i.e.: 11 per cent of television households watched the episode.

The "17" is the share of actual television viewing at that time period: 17 per cent of televisions turned on in each quarter hour. The '17" is an average of the four quarter hours for the show.

Of course projected with Nielsen metered television households clusters for total viewing. The diaries come later with more solid demographic data.

It's so refreshing to see a smart, unique show doing well in the ratings. I had nearly given up on the television viewers in the US, it seemed all they would watch were "cop" shows or reality TV.

Yeay for LOST!
