Well, a fresh theory, I love it. I have never noticed this before, but I will look for it now. Ethan was on a new series (Threshold), that started last night, and he looks like he could either be a main character, or killed off soon, so until we know if he's otherwise obligated, I think you might have something here.

William's character might come back on Threshold, but as of now he's not signed to do more episodes. He's currently filming a guest spot on an NBC show. So...they could bring Ethan back for some flashback action to explain his connections to Claire/Charlie/Locke, etc. I hope they will!
