View Full Version : What's inside the hatch is a MIRROR image!
slititsthroat_bashitin 09-23-2005, 05:37 PM Something I noticed when rewatching the Season 2 premier:
The man in the hatch wakes up and puts on a record. When he does this, there is a couch and a painting on the wall to the right of the bookcase. The record player itself is on a shelf, to the right of a stack of vinyl albums.
A few minutes later, he injects himself with the serum and then we hear the explosion of dynamite. The camera pans down the hall and all of a SUDDEN we see that the couch/painting are to the LEFT of the bookcase, and the record player is on the shelf to the LEFT of the albums!!! The whole inside of the hatch suddenly reverses.
Was it the dynamite exploding that alerted the guy, or is it possible the trebuchet that Locke and Boone built is what first alerted him to the fact that there were people milling around above?
I noticed in the hatch there was a ping-pong table, 2 bunk beds, a game of backgammon or Go out on the kitchen table. You can't play a board game or ping-pong by yourself; WHO else is in the hatch besides Desmond?? Or who WAS with him? Is he playing these games against himself? Against his own opposite or his mirror-image?
Later we see Walt speaking in reverse. This is probably because Walt is speaking to Shannon from the reverse/mirror world?
When Jack enters the hatch, the computer keyboard is in a room with giant, old computers surrounded by a geo-dome. The nice furniture, etc. that's there in the very beginning is gone. Is this because the very beginning of the episode was in the past and the inside of the hatch has changed? Or is it because the inside of the hatch is like the holo-deck on Star Trek TNG?
Thoughts?
lockeseviltwin 09-23-2005, 05:43 PM were we discussing this on the ABC boards? i thought it was someone with the slithisthroat name... anyway, those threads seem to have gotten deleted.
i describe the first scene in the hatch, and most of it relates to what you're talking about, here:

slititsthroat_bashitin 09-23-2005, 05:46 PM Yes that was me! This site replaces my 'bash it in' name with 'bacrapin' automatically.
LOL.
Anyway, I was banned from the ABC site and I have no idea why! I just joined like 24 hours ago too! So I came here to try and discuss this stuff. I don't know why they deleted my threads over there as well.
lockeseviltwin 09-23-2005, 05:55 PM they deleted every thread i had posted my site in!! so maybe it was my fault, but i didnt get banned.
i think they assumed i was spamming maybe?
yeah right, spamming with a site that shows i watched their show about a thousand times over the past two days.
weird.
anyway...
this place is much better.
and i still agree with ya.
xanadu 09-23-2005, 05:57 PM I think there's more than one room.

lacim 09-23-2005, 06:01 PM I noticed right away that some of the stuff was really old and some of it was new. There was one scene where the camera was panning around and you saw one of those new Washer's & Dryers. Like the energy efficient big bubbly ones. I also thought it was weird that they guy was waking up as if it was just morning, but it was totally night outside when Locke and them actually blew open the hatch. I also thought it was weird how the room had changed when Jack went in there.
slititsthroat_bashitin 09-23-2005, 06:02 PM Could you check those links and let us know? I can't seem to pull up the JPEGs?
I originally thought there were two different rooms as well. But then I noticed, right when he injects himself and the camera shows the bookcase with the record player on it, you can see the painting/mural it's right there through a doorway. Since Jack passes right by the mural it would seem there's only one "main room" inside the hatch.
I could be wrong? Hopefully your images will solve the mystery!
lostfan88 09-23-2005, 06:06 PM I didn't get a good look at all of these mirrors, but the reversal reminds me of "Secret Window." Did anyone see that movie? I loved that part.

well i think the old and new stuff is explained by some stuff breaking down and being replaced.
he's got no natural sunlight under the earth, so i'd guess that day/night outside has no bearing on his schedule.
i think whatever he is injecting into his arm is making everything seem clean and shiny to him, and we only see it thru his eyes in the opening scene. once jacks down there we see how decrepit it (and desmond) really is.

After watching "Adrift" it seemed to me that Desmond had been down there for a long time and had no contact with anyone. So I don't think some of his appliances broke and he got it replaced with new ones.
But you could be right about the stuff he injected into his arm is making him see things in a better perspective.
I think what he is injecting into himself has something to do with the magnetic force on the Island, because I'm pretty sure the mystery of the Island has something to do with magnetic forces/fields
DallasElizabeth 10-05-2005, 02:25 PM Re games, sleeping arrangements, etc. for two people:
I can't help but wonder if there have been different people who have been inside the hatch with Desmond over a period of time...
I think Locke's been on the island before. I think the man in the mental facility who was saying the numbers over and over had been on the island before...
If Desmond was in Austrailia, it is possible that in some way, people come and go from the island under very unusual rules and for an unknown purpose.
junglefever 10-09-2005, 04:02 AM I thought the opening scenes of that episode were from the past. A time when that opening song was probably as new as the stereo system. As for Desmond being down there longer than he lets on.. How about we are looking at two completely different guys here and at completely different times. Remeber, they never show his face in the opening shots. Only when the blast occurs do we see a face and then the whole tenor of the room has changed as well as the guys grooming.
Noeland 10-11-2005, 01:07 PM They reversed a few shots just so you coul;dn't get a mental geography of the space. It was very effective, I still don't know where anything is in the hatch, but that particular entrance should be what leads to the "front door".

That happened about 1-2 weeks before they entered the hatch. Even under bad circumstances (which it really doesn't seem that bad down there) the place would not have deteriorated that much that fast. It was aflashback, and I think the dynamite blast brought him back to reality.
Or it was a past hatch blast.
Or neither. That's just the kind of show this is.
Whos Ethan? 10-12-2005, 11:16 AM I thought the injection he gives himself was something to make him more alert and stay awake, how else could he press the button every 108 minutes? He would need a constant supply of something in his system to keep him awake, probably the same for the music, it keeps him awake.....
as for the hatch being a parralel or mirror dimension-- I think not, we have been told what the hatches purpose is and imo its to house just 1 of many experiments being deployed by Hanso and the darma corp , aka "the others"
dave3011 10-16-2005, 03:21 AM Interesting. Maybe the first bit was a flashback to a NORMAL every day as he wakes up.
KountryGirl 10-17-2005, 02:38 PM I personally think the image we saw to begin with was not Desmond. Maybe I remember wrong, but do we ever see his face? We know there is at least one other hatch on the island, who is to say that isn't another one still running?
Just a thought.

This is what I was thinking too. In some shots the man is wearing a white t-shirt and white boxer shorts, and then he is wearing no shirt and green knee-length shorts, then he seems to go back to white t-shirt again. I know it is possible that he changed off-camera, but it could also indicate two different people. I also wonder about the postioning of the exercise bike and weights when he is shown in the kitchen washing the dishes, and then shown later riding the exercise bike, but it is not where it was in the kitchen shot.
(White shirt and boxers)

(Exercise bike in the kitchen against the wall; no weights visible)

(Man exercising with green shorts on. Bike is in a different location and weights are now beside him)

(Back in a white t-shirt again, and room appears to be flipped opposite to earlier scene)

joathina 10-29-2005, 07:06 AM It is desmond, henry ian cusick has confirmed this I think.
To me it looks like they haven't shown his face at the start, because the flashback meeting between desmond and jack hasn't happened yet and we're not supposed make the connection till the end when jack does.

yeah, I was thinking that too, or that he's been there so long on his own that he is hallucinating
Noeland 11-01-2005, 02:22 PM I had not noticed the short/pants bit before. Damn. No reason for that other than to confuse and divide! :)

I think it's all Desmond-- mainly because Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond) has ALL of
those photos at his site, and says they're HIS appearance on LOST.
so, he must have filmed those scenes-hence, they're Desmond.
Maybe part of it was when he first arrived, and part was 'current time'...
