Liz I agree with you. I think that he will end up being a friend. I think that while he may be able to answer some questions, he will have a whole bunch of other questions. I doubt that he understands everything that is going on, he is probably just a pawn working for somebody else.

As much as I would want him to be good, there was something in his eyes in that last shot of him, that makes me think of him as evil or crazy..... that bug eyed look......

He met Jack in the stadium in the Series Premier during a flashback.

If he does turn out to be friendly , he would porbabky end up with a similar charecter style as Locke , with high mystery, As a huge fan of Locke , I would hate to see anyone take the light away from him.

Personally I would prefer him to divulge some small tit bits of information (just enougth to arrouse some intrest in is story) , then dissapear or die.

I think he is a pawn rather than a king , and we will be seeing more people from his group.

I heard a radio promo this morning. Desmond is asking Jack or Locke (I couldnt' tell which) the following:

Des: How many of your group are sick?
L or J: Sick?
Des: Yes, sick. As in Ill, sick, dead.

So Desmond is quarantined INSIDE the hatch, afraid of something on the island. I think he will be a friend.

The conversation he has with Locke or Jack is interesting. I really think there is some kind of a disease or something out there. That is why he is taking shots and live in the hatch.

Yeah, I think he is good, just really really scared. Once he realizes that they are cool, he will be nicer. Still strange, though, I bet.

I have a feeling we will get a little information from Desmond. He will probably offer them drinks with drugs in them. Then Jack, Kate and Locke will wake up in the jungle and find the hatch filled with cement.

I know this idea is a bit "out there" but what if Desmond went on his trip around the world and got some disease and has quarantined himself on the island??? Just a thought!

Remember that Danielle talked about her team and the "sickness". I believe she said she had to kill all of them. Could Desmond be in the hatch to protect himself from the "sickness"? Danielle also told Sayid to watch the other survivors. hmmmmmmmmmm

When they were running in the stadium, I felt there was a veiled insult behind almost everything Desmond said. That entire encounter had an uneasy feeling.

Im wondering if Desmond was sent to asess Jack. So to speak. For them to select him (if you will) for the island. This happened quite some time ago, when he met his "wife". Enough time to observe him

This picture is from episode four, Everybody Hates Hugo. Now if you click on the picture to blow it up, you can see that the symbol that is all around the hatch is on the can of cookies. That leads me to believe that he is going to turn out to be nice and give them food and supplies that they need.
