View Full Version : Snowman?
LockeNLoad 09-28-2005, 11:11 PM What did one snowman say to the other snowman?
Can you smell carrots!
So thats the answer but what is the signifance of it?:undecide:
Quietbreeze 09-28-2005, 11:14 PM That was the code that was to signify his replacement. Only his replacement would answer it correctly.
Fausage5440 09-28-2005, 11:18 PM and it was what did sailman say to the other sailman
Lost_In_Louisiana 09-28-2005, 11:19 PM
I was trying to think of an answer and all I could come up with was,
"Have a n(ice) day"
:lipsseal:
kajah 09-28-2005, 11:25 PM Wait? What did he say? Snowman, sailman?? I thought I heard Messiah, but I was talking, so I missed it.
SawyersGirl 09-28-2005, 11:28 PM Sailman? There is no such word, according to the good ol dictionary. There's seaman and sailor, but no sailman. Regardless, I couldn't make out what he said. Anyone know?
lostfan88 09-28-2005, 11:32 PM he said snowman
we are talking about Desmond right?
I could not understand what he said to Locke. Is this what he asked him?
Orinthiya 09-28-2005, 11:40 PM He asked Locke, "What did the snowman say to the other snowman?"
addicted2much 09-28-2005, 11:48 PM Dude, I bet Hurley knows. :hurley:
colditalianpizza 09-28-2005, 11:53 PM the answer is 'do you smell carrots'
rachelislost 09-28-2005, 11:55 PM Ah hahaha.... wow, I must not be able to understand Desmond's accent very well, since what I heard was: "What did one silhouette say to the other silhouette?" :D
colditalianpizza 09-28-2005, 11:58 PM the answer was do you smell carrots
EmptyJar 09-29-2005, 12:08 AM forgive me for wondering... how do u know the answer?? haha did someone ask jeeves or something? :P
Orinthiya 09-29-2005, 12:09 AM It's an old joke.
Countrygirl 09-29-2005, 12:14 AM And I thought he asked, "What does one summer say to another summer?" Argh
MaggieRyanJr 09-29-2005, 12:15 AM I agree that the snowman joke seemed to be a code to signify his replacement. Why is the replacement so late, though? And is there any significance to calling themselves snowmen?
If it was a code it was a lousy one, since two people on here already knew the answer. :D Kind of like the nuttiness of having the secret computer code engraved on the hatch.
Noeland 09-29-2005, 12:22 AM He's late because there is no replacement coming. My guess is that Desmond has been LONG forgotten about by someone. He clearly thinks something happen to the world, and there is some kind of sickness outside. So, someone is running a game on Desmond in a big way, or there was a near accident and he sealed himself in, and someone promised to let him know when he could come out again.
Noeland 09-29-2005, 12:24 AM Kind of like the nuttiness of having the secret computer code engraved on the hatch.
I wonder if somebody sealed him there and tagged the hatch for ID purposes? Hmm. My guess is the computers, and the countdown don't mean a thing any longer. Whatever was keeping Desmond down there is long gone.
LockeLove 09-29-2005, 12:26 AM Ah hahaha.... wow, I must not be able to understand Desmond's accent very well, since what I heard was: "What did one silhouette say to the other silhouette?" :D
You and me kiddo...wait did you post this on the other thread too? Nevermind that was someone else. Three people heard silhoutte!! Who's jumping on this one too.
I thought it was like a "solitary" joke or something. heh.
I wonder if somebody sealed him there and tagged the hatch for ID purposes? Hmm. My guess is the computers, and the countdown don't mean a thing any longer. Whatever was keeping Desmond down there is long gone.
That sounds reasonable enough, and if someone was supposed to find him via the numbers broadcast and Danielle did indeed change it, that explains why he never changed it back - he was locked in.
Nay815 09-29-2005, 12:39 AM That sounds reasonable enough, and if someone was supposed to find him via the numbers broadcast and Danielle did indeed change it, that explains why he never changed it back - he was locked in.
For 16 years???? Then how did he meet Jack running the stairs? Granted we don't know how long ago that was ( I bet 4 years ) but not 16 years ago when Danielle changed the message! Jack is not that old.
Ah right, so if it was really 16 years that rules that out.
Lost_In_Louisiana 09-29-2005, 12:51 AM Maybe the answer to the joke is the clue?
"Do you smell carrots?" is kind of a funny thing to say, since carrots really don't have a strong scent at all. I mean, I realize the joke is because people traditionally use carrots for snowman noses, but when I thought about it - carrots really don't have much of a scent. Can you smell carrots???
LockeLove 09-29-2005, 12:51 AM You know...the smell thing can go along with the whole theory about the senses in LOST.
Aurora10 09-29-2005, 12:56 AM lol True. I recently heard this joke (maybe a a month or two ago) in this interview (Cillian from Red Eye). What does it all mean, Basil?
Mr.James 09-29-2005, 01:04 AM but where did you get "can you smell the carrots" as the answer?
LockeLove 09-29-2005, 01:05 AM but where did you get "can you smell the carrots" as the answer?
They have a carrot as a nose and are smelling carrots, because well, they are smelling their own nose!
Mr.James 09-29-2005, 01:07 AM They have a carrot as a nose and are smelling carrots, because well, they are smelling their own nose!
I get the Joke.......but i mean, have people heard this before or what.....i just want to know if this is an actual joke people have heard or something.
Pistol Pete 09-29-2005, 01:09 AM I found it weird that Desmond asked Locke "So there's still a world out there?"
It made it sound he thought there was some type of nuclear holocaust or something. And thing about asking them how many people got sick. ya almost have to think some weird scientific experiment gone wrong especially with symbol being on sharks and bears on and around the island.....
LockeLove 09-29-2005, 01:09 AM I get the Joke.......but i mean, have people heard this before or what.....i just want to know if this is an actual joke people have heard or something.
Ah..sorry! You know the whole internet thing just isn't the same as having an actual conversation! I've never heard it before, but maybe it's in some kid joke books or it's a pretty common Winter/Xmas joke.
green_eyed_colleen 09-29-2005, 01:09 AM It reminds me of the joke the nurse told Mike in the hospital.
About the penguin with the sunburn.
DaNay4422 09-29-2005, 01:10 AM apparently, a lot of people have heard this joke. I haven't personally, but I'm assuming it's just one of those things like, "What's black and white and red all over?" Just a little children's joke.
Aurora10 09-29-2005, 01:12 AM Yeah, I've heard it. Apparently lots have!
puechsh 09-29-2005, 01:15 AM Hmm...a children's joke, or a joke that only a child would know how to reply to? A child such as Walt?
ForeverLost19 09-29-2005, 01:20 AM I've never heard it.
Do you mind my asking... the people that do know the answer, are you by any chance Irish or British or Australian? I'm wondering if it's a cultural thing.
I'm in the States and I never heard this; however, I didn't live here as a child, so maybe I just missed it.
Mr.James 09-29-2005, 01:21 AM Ah..sorry! You know the whole internet thing just isn't the same as having an actual conversation! I've never heard it before, but maybe it's in some kid joke books or it's a pretty common Winter/Xmas joke.
No, its cool. I didnt mean to sound frustrated or anything....appreciate your help, but i was just wondering how people came to that answer....and now I know. so thanks
silveranswer 09-29-2005, 01:24 AM the answer was do you smell carrots
Ha! I'd never heard that before and I just figured it out! That's funny!
Charlie 09-29-2005, 01:25 AM I couldn't understand what the heck he was saying.
Period.
:D
LostApril 09-29-2005, 01:26 AM Hmm...a children's joke, or a joke that only a child would know how to reply to? A child such as Walt?
good call...i wouldnt have thought of that
chellekay 09-29-2005, 01:29 AM I just read this thread
http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=20061
SNOWMEN. It was a very common code name back then. I have thought Desmond was a spy as soon as I saw him with the telescope, which is also known as a "spyglass".
my husband was saying the same thing
thebridgeisover 09-29-2005, 01:39 AM "Freeze."
Charlie 09-29-2005, 01:41 AM Hmm...a children's joke, or a joke that only a child would know how to reply to? A child such as Walt?
I second the thought that that ^ reminds me of the joke Michael used in one of his letters to Walt. While he was in the hospital.
So Walt's supposed to come to the hatch... and the Others know why, and are trying to stop him from doing so?
Dezdmona 09-29-2005, 01:50 AM He's late because there is no replacement coming. My guess is that Desmond has been LONG forgotten about by someone. He clearly thinks something happen to the world, and there is some kind of sickness outside. So, someone is running a game on Desmond in a big way, or there was a near accident and he sealed himself in, and someone promised to let him know when he could come out again.Maybe someone who is now DEAD. Someone connected to the current castaways? Someone in the Medical profession perhaps? :eek2: Hmmm....
Alexander 09-29-2005, 02:55 AM "Freeze."
That's the first thing that came to me as well.
EmptyJar 09-29-2005, 03:01 AM yea i posted in another thread that the snowman thing immediately reminded me of something michael might send to walt, so mabye the 'him' isn't walt but michael?
would be funnier if hurley cuz we all know hurley would never set foot in that hatch so long as those numbers are etched on the side of it...
aurabright 09-29-2005, 03:03 AM You and me kiddo...wait did you post this on the other thread too? Nevermind that was someone else. Three people heard silhoutte!! Who's jumping on this one too.
I thought it was like a "solitary" joke or something. heh.
I heard silhoutte too. My sister even asked me what Desmond said and I told her 'silhoutte'.
Huh. And I'm usually pretty good with accents. :(
blondefilmgirl 09-29-2005, 03:09 AM I plugged the joke into google before reading completely through this thread and it is indeed an old children's joke and the answer is indeed, "Can you smell carrots". Here's the link to the search: http://www.google.com/search?hs=qqq&hl=en&lr=&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&q=+%22What+did+one+snowman+say+to+the+other+snowma n%3F%22&btnG=Search
Eventually that same search will be plugged with Lost entries. :p
coupons 09-29-2005, 03:25 AM I'm melting!!!
jbdean 09-29-2005, 03:28 AM That was the code that was to signify his replacement. Only his replacement would answer it correctly.
Yes it was! It's how spies identify their contacts ... with riddles or everyday sayings that the right person knows the anser to. It gave us a big clue. I think it shows that Desmond is working for some government project.
Orinthiya 09-29-2005, 09:30 AM but where did you get "can you smell the carrots" as the answer?
No one knows if that is the actual answer for Desmond's code, it's just the answer for a joke that begins the same way so we're just assuming for the time being that it was the other helf of the code.
e2manuel 09-29-2005, 10:34 AM I thought Desmond said what did one similar say to the other similar?
Jayepmills 09-29-2005, 10:54 AM I didn't understand what he said either, so I watched it again with closed caption on, he 100% said SNOWMAN, unless the CC people messed up the transcript. ;)
To get to the other side.
diabolo237 09-29-2005, 11:09 AM I think that there is a replacement for Desmond its Hurley But he doesnt even know it himself yet. I also think the answer is not going to be Do you smell carrots? because anyone who heard the joke would know the answer and considering the mystery and lock down that Desmond is in I dont think the answer would be as simple as that. iTs code for something and we dont know yet
MaddyL 09-29-2005, 11:14 AM I read on EW this morning that Hurley actually told the same joke in Season 1 ... Does anyone remember this?
BrownEyedGrrl 09-29-2005, 11:15 AM I second the thought that that ^ reminds me of the joke Michael used in one of his letters to Walt. While he was in the hospital.
So Walt's supposed to come to the hatch... and the Others know why, and are trying to stop him from doing so?
But, if he was expecting a child, why would he even bother asking Locke the question?
BTW- I love Terry O'Quinn the more I watch LOST!! He's just such a natural actor. I love him! :D
bluelost 09-29-2005, 11:16 AM I found it weird that Desmond asked Locke "So there's still a world out there?"
It made it sound he thought there was some type of nuclear holocaust or something. And thing about asking them how many people got sick. ya almost have to think some weird scientific experiment gone wrong especially with symbol being on sharks and bears on and around the island.....
The first thing I thought when I heard him say that was Y2K. What if this was some kind of fallout shelter because they thought the world was going to end. It is plausable that he has been there for only 5 years.
BrownEyedGrrl 09-29-2005, 11:21 AM The first thing I thought when I heard him say that was Y2K. What if this was some kind of fallout shelter because they thought the world was going to end. It is plausable that he has been there for only 5 years.
Makes sense. And I definitely don't think he's been down there as long as the ticks on the wall might suggest, so 5 years or so seems reasonable.
mbsieve 09-29-2005, 11:23 AM People seem to be focused on Walt. The guys on the boat came after him and I bet the Others (or are they the other Others) might also be looking for him.
And maybe Desmond is as well. Desmond's riddle seemed to be child-like. Most adults wouldnt know it. Perhaps Walt is some sort of icon or something. Perhaps there is a part of Walt that knows the answer to the riddle and that He is the one that Desmond is waiting on. He has unusual powers. The full extent of those powers have yet to be addressed. His comic book deals with snow or snow creatures...its just a whim but there are some subtle hints that are quietly pointing at Walt
bluelost 09-29-2005, 11:24 AM Makes sense. And I definitely don't think he's been down there as long as the ticks on the wall might suggest, so 5 years or so seems reasonable.
If he has been down there for over 5 years and ticked every day, there would be over 1800 ticks. I think it is possible for there to be about that many on the wall.
BrownEyedGrrl 09-29-2005, 11:25 AM If he has been down there for over 5 years and ticked every day, there would be over 1800 ticks. I think it is possible for there to be about that many on the wall.
Ah, true. I didn't do the math. ;)
teriaki 09-29-2005, 11:25 AM I agree that the snowman joke seemed to be a code to signify his replacement. Why is the replacement so late, though? And is there any significance to calling themselves snowmen?
Maybe he's waiting for his coke dealer?
lateralus 09-29-2005, 11:28 AM Maybe the person he is waiting for comes from a snowy place.....like a place that might have Polar Bears.
mbsieve 09-29-2005, 11:29 AM but hurley does go down there...it is in next weeks preview. i am anxious to find out more about this whole hatch thing. god these writers can get you worked up cant they...?
Huskie Edit: Previews are considered spoilers. Use spoiler tags.
Tonnesta 09-29-2005, 11:37 AM Ah hahaha.... wow, I must not be able to understand Desmond's accent very well, since what I heard was: "What did one silhouette say to the other silhouette?" :D
I thought he said silhouette too.
I am so behind on posting this...
JAZZYJ 09-29-2005, 11:43 AM I was really hoping Locke would get the answer right and become the ruler of the hatch.
Mrs.Woody 09-29-2005, 11:47 AM No one knows if that is the actual answer for Desmond's code, it's just the answer for a joke that begins the same way so we're just assuming for the time being that it was the other helf of the code.
Assuming that Desmond is waiting for a replacement, and that the replacement will know the answer to the riddle ala spy-talk, then it follows that the answer will be nonsensical. The answer could be anything including "my dog has fleas".
I do believe Desmond thought the world was gone, and that the fall out shelter was supposed to "save him". But then, I also think he was a replacement for someone else. He couldn't have been down there for 16 years, but the computers and some of the technology is 20+ years old.
I was really hoping Locke would get the answer right and become the ruler of the hatch.
For the split second second following this exchange:
Desmond: Are you him?
Locke: Yes.
I was like HOLYF***INGSH**OMGWTF.
Then I realized he was just saying yes to see what Desmonds response would be.
haha.
cullmnt 09-29-2005, 11:51 AM It reminds me of the joke the nurse told Mike in the hospital.
About the penguin with the sunburn.
GOOD CATCH!
chellekay 09-29-2005, 01:13 PM Hurley tell the snowman joke the first season
Hurley tell the snowman joke the first season
In what scene? I keep hearing this but I havent seen anyone who knows where it actually is.
The thing that came to mind when I figured out that he said was:
The Falcon and the Snowman (1985)
A movie about two spies
ForeverLost19 09-29-2005, 01:43 PM Perhaps Walt is some sort of icon or something. Actually, the comic book was Hurley's. Walt just picked it up on the beach after the crash.
Lockefan 09-29-2005, 01:46 PM Well, guys, I tried to read this whole thread, but when I realized that it is 8 pages, I kinda gave up about a little more than halfway through, so sorry in advance if I repeat anything, but:
1. I Googled up "What did one snowman say to the other snowman?" and apparently, as has been said here, it is indeed a well-known joke, as I hit on many, many sites similar to the following:
http://enorthernbc.com/Joke-Shoppe.asp?JokeID=63&C=Miscellaneous
2. I didn't take it that Desmond thought Locke was his replacement. I took it, from the awe-struck tone in which he said "Are you him?", that he thought Locke was the leader of some cult that built this whole underground society and promised to show up there one day when the time was just right. Desmond thought Locke was either the leader of this cult or maybe even some sort of "messiah" that the cult believes is going to come down and lead their perfect utopia once the outer world ends. Something along those lines is what I thought, especially given Desmond's apparent shock expressed later upon learning that "the world's still out there, then?" I think that, had Locke responded "Do you smell carrots?", Demond might have fallen to his knees and kissed Locke's feet or something!
MarineOne 09-29-2005, 02:08 PM I don't agree with the "Do you smell carrots?" answer to Desmond's question. Others have hit it right on the head with "This is how spies communicate/ Changing of the guard" theories. I spent 4 years in the Marine Corps and the way we did it is the most commonly used exchange for a challenge password. Each party is given the 2 words that consist of the challenge and password. The challenge contains 1 of the words, the password contains the other. Both words are encompassed in a sentence so that anyone that may overhear the sentence doesn't know what the actual passWORD was. Such as this example:
Challenge: Snow
Password: Dog
"What did one snowman say to the other snowman?"
"Have you seen my dog lately?"
Challenge: Rocky
Password: Cloud
"Have you ever been to the Rocky Mountains?"
"No, but I heard the clouds are really beautiful."
Then, if either party doesn't hear the corresponding word in the sentence (either the challenge word OR the pass word), he/she knows that the post has been compromised and will immediately draw down or call for back up.
hairydawg13 09-29-2005, 02:14 PM I have heard the same about Hurley saying the joke/riddle in a earlier episode. If that is true I think he hard that from the guy in the mental hospital (could also be where Desmond was "almost" a doctor) that he got his numbers from. The guy in the nut house maybe a huge clue as to what is going on in my opinion.
Jacova 09-29-2005, 02:51 PM I have heard the same about Hurley saying the joke/riddle in a earlier episode. I so agree with this. We've all been trying to figure out how the lostaways are all connected, it is quite clear that Hurley is connected to those numbers, and where did he get those numbers? The guy in the psych ward. If Hurley did actually mention the joke last year, then I'm convinced that the person Desmond is waiting for is the guy Hurley met, but something happened to him to make him crazy, and that's why he never came.
Oh, and when Desmond asked Locke if he was "him", and Locke said yes, all I could think was the line from Ghostbusters - "If someone asks if you're a god, YOU SAY YES!" LOL
Oh, and when Desmond asked Locke if he was "him", and Locke said yes, all I could think was the line from Ghostbusters - "If someone asks if you're a god, YOU SAY YES!" LOL
"Are you a God?"
"....no."
"...then...DIE!!!!!!!!"
"Ray...if someone asks you if you're a God, you say YES!!!"
ForeverLost19 09-29-2005, 03:06 PM Yes, I thought it was Locke that looked kind of shy/smug pleased to be addressed that way, i.e.
"yes, I'm The Chosen One that was knocking on your hatch door a while back. Yes, I'm the one that sacrificed my young acolyte so that you would know that I was devoted to you."
lost_knight 09-29-2005, 03:15 PM Well, guys, I tried to read this whole thread, but when I realized that it is 8 pages, I kinda gave up about a little more than halfway through, so sorry in advance if I repeat anything, but:

Sorry this just struck me as funny, to continue with your speculation...
It would just seem funny to me for the "messiah" or cult leader to use the code "What did one snowman say to the other snowman." to identify himself.
smd6290 09-29-2005, 03:53 PM Ah hahaha.... wow, I must not be able to understand Desmond's accent very well, since what I heard was: "What did one silhouette say to the other silhouette?" :D

The one that threw me off what when he was watching Jack in the scope. I had to rewind to catch that he said. Your doctors got a gun brother. Or something like that.
jbdean 09-29-2005, 05:19 PM It's an old joke.
But if it was a code question, the chances are very good that the real answer would not the be the joke's answer.
Charlie 09-29-2005, 05:27 PM But, if he was expecting a child, why would he even bother asking Locke the question?
Because he doesn't know he's expecting a child. Desmond only knows the question.
Dezdemona 09-29-2005, 05:38 PM The snowman joke is an old one that I've heard several times, but I had never heard the carrot version. I'd always heard it with "Freeze" or "Chill" as the response. The things you learn watching this show!
jbdean 09-29-2005, 05:44 PM For 16 years???? Then how did he meet Jack running the stairs? Granted we don't know how long ago that was ( I bet 4 years ) but not 16 years ago when Danielle changed the message! Jack is not that old.
It was in 1997.

Desmond: Are you him?
Locke: Yes.
I was like HOLYF***INGSH**OMGWTF.
Then I realized he was just saying yes to see what Desmonds response would be.
haha.
sier, I don't think that's what Locke was saying Yes for. I think that, for that split second, Locke thought that he was being expected. Locke thinks that island is his destiny and the hatch was connected to all of it. I truly think that Locke felt he had "come home," so to speak, and that Desmond was "expecting him" like he was expecting to find his Destiny in that hatch! But when he was asked the question/riddle, then he knew it was not the case. He looked disappointed before he looked confused.
I so agree with this. We've all been trying to figure out how the lostaways are all connected, it is quite clear that Hurley is connected to those numbers, and where did he get those numbers? The guy in the psych ward. Someone else mentioned that Lenny (the guy in the psych ward) could have been in there BEFORE Desmond, and thats where both he and Hurley got the numbers from. And the joke - although can anyone say which episode that was in??? - like the nearly doctor bit too. He could have been a psych nurse.
jbdean 09-29-2005, 06:21 PM The one that threw me off what when he was watching Jack in the scope. I had to rewind to catch that he said. Your doctors got a gun brother. Or something like that.
Yes, that's just what he said.
jbdean 09-29-2005, 06:24 PM Someone else mentioned that Lenny (the guy in the psych ward) could have been in there BEFORE Desmond, and thats where both he and Hurley got the numbers from. And the joke - although can anyone say which episode that was in??? - like the nearly doctor bit too. He could have been a psych nurse.
Lenny might have been the one that Desmond replaced! After all, being locked down there for goodness knows how long, could drive anyone insane. And since Lenny was repeating the numbers, and would have been entering them in the computer like Desmond, they stuck in his head because, by Desmond's reaction when he had Locke enter them, it seems to be a VERY important thing to do!
egbrown 09-29-2005, 06:30 PM Someone else mentioned that Lenny (the guy in the psych ward) could have been in there BEFORE Desmond, and thats where both he and Hurley got the numbers from. And the joke - although can anyone say which episode that was in??? - like the nearly doctor bit too. He could have been a psych nurse.
It seems likely that Lenny was the person (or one of the people) down there before Desmond, had to enter those numbers into the computer ever couple of hours, caught the disease when he got out of there (it seems to be some sort of mental illness judging from the Others), and then got sent to the psych ward once back on the mainland. I don't remember which episode the joke was told on, but I do remember it, and Hurley's answer being, "Freeze," not the carrot thing.

EGBrown, I am not picking on *you* for this, so please dont take it that way...
....I would really like to figure out what episode this is on because I don't remember this at all. Does anyone remember this *at all*, other than just saying "yeah it happened". Who was he talking to? Was he on the beach or was it in a flashback? I still have not seen any conformation at all that this is true other than a few people saying they remember it.
It would be nice if it was true. But I need proof.
ForeverLost19 09-29-2005, 07:05 PM Lenny and his friend (whose name I have forgotten, the one who Hurley went to see in Australia) worked in the Navy monitoring radio transmissions in the Pacific Rim area. That is where the two of them heard the numbers. They picked up the transmission, possibly if 16 years ago, it was also the transmission that Danielle's team picked up on their boat.
I don't believe it follows plot-wise that Lenny had any other relation to the island.
contos 09-29-2005, 07:15 PM I also remember Hurley telling that joke! I will try to research the eppy it was in.

Now I do recall that the man who Hurley went to see in Australia heard the numbers over the radio but I didn't recall that that was how Lenny heard them. And if he did hear them on the radio ... if he'd been in the hatch prior to that, hearing the numbers might have been what put him over the edge. Hmmm?
Peffe 09-29-2005, 10:12 PM I found it weird that Desmond asked Locke "So there's still a world out there?"
It made it sound he thought there was some type of nuclear holocaust or something. And thing about asking them how many people got sick. ya almost have to think some weird scientific experiment gone wrong especially with symbol being on sharks and bears on and around the island.....
This may have already been posted, but I had on captions last night and he didn't say... So there's still a world out there, he said "So theres more of you out there?"
Or something like that. I don't remember verbatim.

I watched the entire first season again RIGHT before the new epsidoes.
Hurley doesn't say that joke.
fugitivekate 09-29-2005, 10:21 PM It was in 1997.
How do you know that the year was 1997??

pheonna 09-29-2005, 10:36 PM episode 18-numbers....lenny goes "mad" saying youve opened the box, get as far away from the numbers as you can. He also says sam told him.. sams wife said he was in the navy, heard them bout 16 years ago over the radio......
GettinLost 09-30-2005, 12:42 AM Is that truly the answer to the joke?? HAHAHA! I was wondering what it was!! Good one! I was trying to figure it out all night!
Obviously a code joke for whoever Desmond was expecting.

Looks like CC was wrong.
According to Terry, he said: http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=20329
I asked Terry in his VIP section and he replied that Desmond said "world."

Hurley doesn't say that joke.
You know, I didn't think so. Michael's nurse tells him a joke for Walt and I think someone tells a joke on the island but it's not the same joke.

Hmmm ... could the "box" be the bunker under the hatch?
lost_knight 09-30-2005, 11:50 AM It's on Jack's ID badge.
Does somebody have a good screenshot of this? Not that I don't trust you, I just like to see things for myself.

Here is what Sam Toomey's wife told Hurley about the radio transmission, it implies that Lenny heard them there too.
Sam and Leonard were stationed at a listening post monitoring long wave transmissions out of the Pacific. Boring job. Sam hated it, nothing to do but listen to static night after night. Til one night, about 16 years ago, there's something in the static, a voice comes through, a voice repeating those numbers over and over again.
Granted there isn't a whole lot of information about Lenny. I do wonder what it was with the Numbers that set Lenny off. I guess it is possible that he was in the bunker before meeting Sam. If not did Lenny use the Numbers also?
colditalianpizza 09-30-2005, 12:15 PM as far as knowing the answer to that joke. after the episode i googled . what did the snowman say to the the snowman. and the answer came up. i had never heard that joke before that night
Does somebody have a good screenshot of this? Not that I don't trust you, I just like to see things for myself.
It's in a thread in Adrift, but which one I have no idea..haha. I dont think it was posted in an obvious one like "Jack's ID Badge", so that makes it difficult to pinpoint.

I haven't seen a cap of it. I just took the post as correct because a lot of people are agreeing that it was on the badge.

Could they have been stationed ON the island? Hmmm ...
