I've been telling my wife about the strange logo's on everything down in the hatch/living quarters area.

Needless to say it blew me away when she blurted out "Did you see what was on the tail of that shark?!?!?" when Michael and Sawyer were trying to pull themselves to the pontoon and we see the shark swim by underneath them. Off to the computer I go for this screen cap:
http://img137.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sharks2e026ag.jpg

You can see the last part of the shark as it swims by and Sawyer's legs hanging in the background. I did not superimpose this image with something else. Rewind your VCR tapes and fire up your video captures... you'll see.

Locke found it on some sort of electrical junction:

It was on the food labels in the room Kate was locked in:

When Desmond opens up the medicine cabinet to take his injection, we see this symbol for the first time:
http://img128.imageshack.us/my.php?image=symbol17mv.jpg

Here is the logo on Desmond's jumpsuit:
http://img57.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jumpsuit0cb.jpg

While Desmond was adjusting the mirrors and the telescope in Season2Episode01, there is another showing of the symbol (albeit backwards if you look at the swan symbol in the middle) on a cement pillar of sorts (red arrow pointer).

And a second later, the same shot is shown again but this time reversed to the way it should be and a little bit further away (red arrow pointer).
http://img128.imageshack.us/my.php?image=symbol33ie.jpg

Obviously to me now, and maybe you as well, this symbol is meant to be part of the environment of the underground facility and quite possibly the island itself.

What could be going on here?

I did not notice it in the show, but have seen it since getting online.

That's a pretty clear indicator to me that whatever is happening to them on this island is not natural, and is being controlled by outside influences. They are not in the real world, the shark, desmond, rousseau, it's all a game.

OMG, I thought I was just imagining this! I kept pointing the symbol out to my mother throught the two-parter and she thought I was over-exagerating with the Shark.

I was suprised that Sawyer lasted so long dangling in the water like that.

Any shark that hadn't been fed recently would have devoured him in his state. At first I thought the shark too might be mechanical, or at least part of the 'security system'? Or maybe for some kind of government test (looking at a possible grander scheme)?

A game perhaps, though based on the intricacy to get all selected parties extricated from their lives, this would require perfect staging and execution. I would presume that this scope of logistics and budget would be toward a deeper purpose than solely a game. Perhaps it's as simple as a case study on some pharmaceutical or theraputic treatment, or a training regimen for something greater, or perhaps something cataclysmic on a world stage, or anything from human psychology in changing stimuli, to sociology, ecology, biophamaceuticals, toxicology, EMF, time travel, teleportation, etc.

I love a good conspiracy theory.

My appologies, I did not know that putting the same post on multiple threads would be considered spamming (which I did not intend) and will make sure it doesn't happen again. Thank you for bringing this to my attention and looking out for the interests of the discussion board.

Thanks Mark (and Mark's wife)! I never noticed the logo on the shark. Cool beans!

I remember from season 1 when Joanna "drowned". Some people swore they saw something in the water with her. Perhaps it was the Dharma shark and it got her rather than her drowning. After all, unless she got a cramp, I assume she was a good swimmer (remember, she was in Australia to go diving off of the Great Barrier Reef). I wonder if she is still alive and where she is now.

Maybe, Kate should be careful with that Apollo candy (Soylent Green! It's made out of people!!!!).

I agree it's fishy (pardon the pun!) about the logo on the shark, but when Michael shot it there was a big shower of blood, which would indicate it was real, not mechanical... although it still could have been trained/owned by someone mysterious...

Mark, do you have hi def? After I heard about this, I rewound my dvr, paused it and saw it! But when I watched it playing through, there was no way I would have seen that.

I saw it briefly too, though no one else I was watching with did. We rewound on the Tivo and paused it and it was very clear. I agree that there must be outside influences here.

Someone go see if the polar bears have the DHARMA logo on them!

I'm really not sure what to make of it. When the logo was confined to just the hatch, it was easy to explain the hatch as the product of a survivalist group, or of a government organization, concerned with surviving some catastrophic event on the surface. But what would the point of a Shark be? This ties the hatch to the entire island.

So what's the lifespan of a shark? Since it did produce blood, we can assume that it was a living, breathing shark, and not some mechanical or robotic being. So someone 'branded' a live shark at some point when it was full-grown (you couldn't mark a baby shark and have the logo 'grow' with the shark). So how long do sharks live? When was this shark likely marked?

The natural assumption to the shark bleeding would be that it's the real thing, but how many times on Lost have we made an assumption that proved to be wrong?

I thought the shark wasn't really acting the way a shark would act after smelling Sawyer's blood. It bumped what was left of the raft a few times causing it to break up, but never really launched a full-mode attack until some time later when Sawyer swam for the pontoon. A real shark, having smelled blood, would have attacked right away, wouldn't it?

It struck me as being more of a warning or surveillance object, mechanical in nature, especially after seeing the branded mark on it.....its "blood" could have been added to make it more life-like. Just a thought......

Blood.... or some sort of hydraulic fluid..... ?!

The strange thing though is that if there was similar markings on all the creatures on the island. The lostaways would know that by now. How many boars have they killed? They nailed that polar bear pretty good, and Michael and Locke saw a second one. So my guess is one of two things.

1) Not everything is branded or made by Dharma
2) The things that would be more obvious, such as the Polar Bear and the Boar, have smaller well hidden brands.

But if everything on the island is a Dharma creation, does that mean the Lostaways are earing geneticly made food? That would also mean the Shark is every bit as real and those boar are.

Or......Is the shark part of the Islands watery defense system. Geneticly made to attack anything in the water as part of keeping the island quarantined?

Good thought! It was night time on the ocean, so whatever spouted up out of the water could be anything; it just looked like blood.

Thanks Mark and Mark's wife. I would not have noticed the marking.
