View Full Version : Desmond's Duties
darkpiranha 09-29-2005, 12:05 AM So...
It seems that Desmond has been in the hatch (is it still accurate to call it just 'the hatch'?) for quite some time.... A decade or so, I'd guess.
And he's been by himself the whole time. The ping-pong table is not a regular sized one... it's designed specifically for someone to play by themselves. It's shorter on the flipped up end.
He was and has been expecting a replacement for quite some time.
He apparently believes that something bad happened on the surface, explaining his reluctance to go outside.
Whenever anyone trips the security system, it starts the countdown clock. All he knows is that he has to type the numbers in, and it resets the clock. I'm guessing that it activates the monster in some way, even though Desmond probably has no clue what he's done.
What's probably happened is that random animals, the Others, the Lostaways, have all triggered the countdown clock.
Desmond believes that the clock is counting down to something horrible.
more later.
Oh, and apparently there are Zombies on the island.
missioni 09-29-2005, 12:10 AM The zombies, or Jin's idea of "others" are the survivors of the tailsection. Mr. Eko is the big scary black guy.

^^^Dude... those are pretty much spoilers if they are true. I know I'm only making it worse, but seriously, people need to watch it.
joeschm 09-29-2005, 12:36 AM I don't think the countdown is triggered by an intruder. I think it's just some kind of regular timer forcing him to authenticate that he's still alive/not insane to prevent a nuclear bomb from going off or something like that.
He didn't seem especially concerned when the beeping went off last week, he just went about his normal daily routine until the hatch got blown off.
Wilder 09-29-2005, 12:39 AM Ditto. I think the countdown clock is making sure someone is still inside the hatch. Why 108 hours (right?) and what happens next... dunno. I
jet3004 09-29-2005, 12:47 AM Pretty sure its in minutes, maybe not, though.
I too don't think the countdown is triggered by an intruder. It's something he periodically has to do.
Adidasphi 09-29-2005, 01:08 AM The countdown is def. 108 mins. When Desmond wakes up in the last episode and does his routine he put in the numbers then execute. It wasnt 105 and change hours later that Jack finally came to see what was up, cause we know it is all in the same night a few hours before daylight, as Jack said. So if the countdown was reading 2 and change and flipping it is best to assume that the white on black numbers are seconds and the numbers to the left are the countdown mins. Otherwise why was the alarm going off 2 hours before there had to be a reset, and Desmond in such a rush.
As for how long Desmond has been in that hatch, or the hatch has been occupied, looks alot like the 70's with the building style and of course the Commadore 64 running the place. But I dont know why the washer and dryer in the hatch is like brand new. Check out http://www.livejournal.com/users/lostanswers/340.html . At the bottom you'll see the washer dryer, which if you look at bestbuy.com is a Whirlpool washer and dryer that are brand new and retail for about $1400 and $900 respectively. So someone has come by to update a possiblely broken original washer dryer I am guessing from the 70's, in the last year.
Gobi-1 09-29-2005, 01:13 AM Maybe he order a washer and dryer offline and had it delivered to the hatch along with NetFlix DVDs to pass the time by.
Adidasphi 09-29-2005, 01:18 AM But how do you put an address on that? :undecide:

Pistol Pete 09-29-2005, 01:26 AM On Access Hollywood today they pointed out Danielle in the mural on the wall. So I guess that means that at some point there was a connection between Danielle and Desmond even though Danielle said she had no idea what the hatch was when they brought her to it at the end of last season. That could mean a few things I guess. Either she's lying, there is another entrance to the hatch, or the Desmond knew her outside of the hatch.

haha yea adidasphi, that's exactly how i woulda put it :P
Mr.James 09-29-2005, 02:13 AM Yea its crazy...it seems he's been down there for a LONG time. And alone, he must be like Danielle. It seems to me that a common thing between the two of them is the "sickness"...and the way that Desmond asked Locke "So the world is still out there" makes me think that there must be some plague or something that is/was on the verge of being spread throughout the world. And maybe Dharma is the corporation that let it loose....or maybe is the corporation that is leading the fight against it....could be either way. but desmond is waiting for something.....and he's been waiting a long time.
What else caught my attention was how when Locke told desmond about the people on the raft....Desmond reacted like that was a joke.....and impossible. which i believe is true.

Almost makes me wonder if he has been led to believe whatever has infected the others has made him think this is a global thing.
Or maybe he's just been down there for so long the idea of an outside world is so remote to him.

I agree, seems to be minutes since Desmond did it when het first got up and then had Locke do again a short time later. However, if it is 108 minutes, Desmond is not getting much REM sleep now is he?
DaNay4422 09-29-2005, 02:19 AM On Access Hollywood today they pointed out Danielle in the mural on the wall.
Where was Danielle in the mural? I've seen the drawings of stick figures and the white and black faces...is she supposed to be one of those, or is it something different that I hadn't noticed?

well we did believe at one point he had a partner...hence the bunkbeds.

I still do believe he had a partner. Personally, I think it was Ethan.
My point was it MUST be 108 hours and for some reason it has gone off again and needs to be reset. Desmond was much too rested in the beginning of 2x01 with the exercising, cleaning etc to have had so little sleep.....but then again, his partner could still be around-----somewhere.
There are several houses drawn on the mural. Do they represent hatches? Are they other hatches located on the island not to mention the huge arrow pointing to the waves? (I'm still of the opinion that there will diving scenes this season.)

At first that sounded right but then I did some math (180 min divided by 60 seconds = 1.8 hours). I can't see him having to get up every 1.8 hours to type in that code. He'd get no decent sleep and would be a total nut case (and I mean TOTAL nut case, not wired like he is). Maybe it's not time but just a counter that counts off on it's own pace. I just can't see the guy having to get up every 1.8 hours for as long as it seems he's been in there and not have been found sitting in the corner babeling like a loon. Sleep deparvation is one of the surest ways to make someone crack. And if he's down there to protect something, they don't need him going nuts on them.

Yeah, I got that from him, too! I thought about how they had only gotten 15 miles from the island before running into the Others. And also the shark. That thing with the same emblem on its side as is in Desmond's bunker leads me to believe that it may be a "security system" that guards the waters to prevent people from escaping.
