View Full Version : Michael's Back? Am I crazy?
Elinnz 09-29-2005, 12:51 AM hey gang --
when michael is on the raft watching sawyer swim to the pontoon, i rewound on DVR three times to get a good look at michael's back. it looks like something is protruding from below his neck (under his shirt) and going down his spine, very defined. it was SO weird. i was just wondering if anyone else saw this.
i may very well be crazy :)
Charlie 09-29-2005, 12:53 AM Weird. But I didn't see that... though I also thought I saw lots of things tonight >_>
Lost_In_Louisiana 09-29-2005, 12:53 AM Perhaps it is a brace or metal rod or something from his accident?
I'm more inclined to think it was a microphone though...
;)
LockeLove 09-29-2005, 12:54 AM I just noticed that his face looked really bloated. At first I just thought it was because it was night scenes, but then when they switched it over to day, I though it was more noticeable.
Gobi-1 09-29-2005, 12:57 AM It could have been some sort of safety device for filming out on the ocean.

That's EXACTLY what I thought, and it totally was. We've stared at him too long not to notice. His face was indeed bloated.
Noeland 09-29-2005, 01:03 AM He wasn't bloated. The actor had gained weight for a role during the off season (I'm not sure which film it is) but he's got a bit of a belly on him too. You can see it in the pics where they are getting thrashed on the beach next week. He's standing up with his hands out, and he's got a paunch. :) I just don't think he could lose all the wieght by the time they started shooting this season.

Thanks for clarifying! I just thought he looked like the salt water was really getting to him! I didn't notice the extra around the middle though. :)
chellekay 09-29-2005, 01:48 AM I did not see anything . . is there a picture?
black.rabbit 09-29-2005, 02:29 AM when actors have water scenes- costumers put wetsuits under their clothes for insulation and warmth
so that would be my guess
kimbrchick 09-29-2005, 03:06 AM I see what you are talking about. You can see it in this cap

It's weird.
Could he be injured and not know it? Like Locke with the piece of metal in his leg.
When the raft blew up he could have gotten something stuck in him, but there's no blood. It doesn't seem like something they'd let slip through.
BurningStar4 09-29-2005, 03:17 AM It could of been something the actor was wearing during the scenes to prevent him from falling in the water - I know he was not a good swimmer and maybe they were afraid of him falling in. It almost looks like they took the device out because the shirt is pulled upward towards his neck - but that is me just guessing.
steveg 09-29-2005, 03:18 AM Is that the only time we see his back? Could just be something the director didn't notice in the editing room.
BurningStar4 09-29-2005, 04:03 AM The editors do make mistakes - there have been a few episodes where camera men have been in the screen on accident - it happens.

To me, that thing under his shirt, whatever it is, seems to poke up near his neck - then run down his spine and under his behind, while another piece wraps around his waist.
Just judging by that, I would guess it was some kind of safety harness - especially knowing that the actor is not a good swimmer and was pretty unhappy about doing the water scenes because he is afraid of the water. I think it had something to do with some cousins holding him underwater in a pool when he was a kid. For whatever reason, he really doesn't like water and I think the harness was there to reassure him, as well as protect him from ACTUALLY drowning.
r4stl1n 10-01-2005, 09:20 PM Michael = Frankenstein. You can tell by his attitude. I figured everyone would have figured that out by now. ;)
GettinLost 10-02-2005, 01:18 AM I think I remember reading somewhere that Harold cannot swim. It may have been something to assist him in "swimming" in the ocean. They probably try to conceal it the best that they can.
Lost_In_Louisiana 10-02-2005, 04:43 AM Of course I can't remember WHERE, but I did read somewhere that he took some swimming lessons over the summer in order to do the scenes for Adrift. He said he's still no great swimmer but he can at least keep himself from drowning for a little while...
sheba 10-02-2005, 04:45 AM From what I've read, Harold doesn't swim. It could very well have been a safety harness.
LostPack 10-02-2005, 05:04 AM I'm betting it was some sort of safety harness as well - he did say he couldn't swim and was planning to take lessons. It did look strange to see that protrusion though lol
Amber 10-02-2005, 06:26 AM Hehe, I did think that he was looking a bit bloated as well. Aww, he looks kind of cute with chubby cheeks, like a chipmunk.
Raven 10-02-2005, 02:52 PM Another possibility... a back brace. He had been injured and needed rehab to walk again.
But, having brought up this possibility, I'm leaning toward the safety harness idea. Although you would have thought someone would catch how visible it was and done something about it.

Your not crazy at all...I just did the exact same thing last night  Tho what I saw was different than the link that kimbrchick posted. I noticed what looked like a retangle box in his upper middle back and I could see the same shape under Sawyer's shirt too, tho not as visiable since he had a black shirt. I'm thinking its a microphone type box like what you see on some of the reality shows.
