Sorry if anyone already mentioned this, but it seems like Hurley's friend from the hospital might have been a former inhabitant of the hatch. If you had to enter the numbers (secret combination to prevent something bad from happening?) over and over every 108 minutes for years on end, wouldn't it make you a little bit crazy?

Interesting point.

EXCELLENT FRIGGIN' POST. So maybe Desmond was the replacement for Lenny (in the hospital)?!?! IF so....how the heck did Lenny get off the island? Tunnels? It's driving me crazy.

Maybe Lenny got off the island right before some kind of accident that prevented people from ever going back to the island. maybe whatever orgnization put Desmond there went bankrupt.

That's a good point. But how do we explain all the seemingly cosmic events surrounding the numbers (Hurley winning the lottery, the meteorite, the fire, etc. etc.)? Where exactly do the numbers stem from?

Lenny heard the numbers being broadcasted through the transmission from the island because his job for I think the NAVY entailed him listening to radio transmission being sent across the Pacific and usually all they heard was static but one night he heard the numbers over and over again. Remember, he worked with Sam Toomey (who ended up shooting himself after using the numbers at that carnival game). Danielle also says she heard the numbers being transmitted from the island, that is why her ship ended up there to investigate the source of the numbers.

Didnt Lenny and his partner (Cant remember his name...Hurley went to visit him, but his wife told him that he had killed himself) hear the numbers when listening for radio transmissions over the Atlantic while in the army?

i think you have a bit of a point...at least that Lenny is somehow involved with the hatch... i keep telling my friend that must be why Lenny went crazy, he had something to do with the 'experiment gone wrong' and he got so fixed on the numbers it made him go nuts... i guess we'll have to wait and see...

Maybe Hurley winning the lottery means that he is the replacement for Desmond? He was the chosen one? Maybe Desmond replaced Twomey?

You have an excellent idea with the Hurley thought. Hurley has mentioned snowballs in the past. MIght be a bit of a stretch to link it to the snowman joke, but its still interesting. Also Toomey culdnt have been in the hatch he heard the message through broadcasts over seas.

A very nice possible connection to Lenny & Desmond....

Maybe the show will end with someone living in the hatch for the rest of their lives?
Or maybe it will end with the survivors revealing the team behind it all and they destroy the island..

That's an interesting thought. We know that Leonard and Sam originally heard the numbers when they were working in the Navy, but that was a long time ago. Obviously both had the numbers on the brain... it's quite possible that Leonard could have gone to investigate them himself. Hmmm. I like it.

I don't think Lenny and Sam ever went to the island, they heard it when they were stationed in the NAVY listening to static transmissions being sent over the Pacific. I'm pretty sure the writers have said that no one who has been on that island has ever left the island - so that would exclude Toomey and Lenny.

Star, can you spoiler font that kind of thing in the future, please? For those of us in passionate pursuit of ignorance. :) Glad you rode out Rita OK.

I agree with your point, btw, I think that Toomey and Lenny are more-or-less innocent bystanders.

I like the Lenny in the hatch idea. It would seem to fit.

Thanks for letting me know, I didn't even realize it would be considered spoilerish.

Yes, I survived Rita and everything is fine here in Houston :) I actually started college classes today.

But yea, I don't think Lenny was ever in that hatch, it just doesn't seem to fit.

I think that there is a definite possibility of Hurley being the chosen one. And while Hurley already seems a bit crazy, if he's the chosen one, he will become more crazy. then, perhaps like Lenny, he would find the secret of escaping the island. but then again, maybe not!

Don't let him hear you call him crazy.

Star, good luck with classes.

Interesting thought. That would explain Desmond asking Locke "Are you him?"
Desmond is waiting for his replacement, but since he thought that the rest of the outside world was "gone" that would mean Desmond has been waiting for someone else on the island to take his place in the hatch......one of the "others"?

True. But if you think about any of the characters, all of them have their own unique peculiarities. Why should Hurley be any different or criticized for being in a mental ward?

Lenny did say to Hurly that he "opened the box" and now it will never end and then went a bit scooters (just watched that episode by the way). He was with Sam at sea and they did hear them...no mention as to what Lenny did with them but Sam won the $50k and then went nuts...what drove Lenny nuts?
