Hi Javi --

I'm curious about your particular writing process, and wondered if you'd share a bit about your writing habits (apologies if you've answered this before!). Do you tend to write a full draft of [whatever] straight through and then go back and edit, edit as you write, write in sections and then piece it together, or something else entirely? Does your process vary depending on what you're writing (a script as opposed to some other form)?

Thanks for all your interactions here!

hi!

in a tv show, we have a very detailed outline that has been approved by the executive producers, studio and network before we write (that way everybody knows what's coming), so a lot of the kinks have been worked and reworked until they are solid. that is a big part of the writing process. then i pretty much go straight through using the outline i have already written as a guide - if i get stuck i might skip to another scene and go from there.

i usually rewrite as i go - on my writing days, i spend the morning composing new material and the afternoon reviewing and rewriting what i have already done, then, when the script is done, if i have the time, i take several more passes at the whole thing - pretty much until i am either convinced that i am done and can go no further without getting notes from my bosses, or until the deadline comes!

and yes, the process varies wildly, when i write for myself i tend to be much more exploratory, and i don't do the kind of rigorous outlining one does for a tv series. when i am just sort of working out or doing something on spec, i have to be disciplined and write, but it can take a lot longer, or a lot less time, and i pretty much go where the inspiration takes me.

i hope this helps -

Thank you for the peek inside the TV-writing process and your own creative flow.* It's always fascinating to hear how people create.
