View Full Version : DHARMA acronym?
gooberpea 09-29-2005, 04:12 PM Hello all,
I've been a lurker for a long time, but this is my first post.
Spouse & I were tossing around possibilities for DHARMA and came up with:
Department for Human and Animal Research on Mutation and Adaption
Development of Human Alternate Reality and Memory Alteration
BurningStar4 09-29-2005, 04:16 PM I was also thinking that DHARMA is an acronym since it is all in capitals. Reminded me of that older movie "DARYL" (D.A.R.Y.L.) which was about a A.I. boy. Anyway, I don't know what it could stand for because it could be almost anything but I think that it is an acronym for a corporation or department or some sort of Illuminati type of group.

It wouldn't surprise me if they were experimenting with cloning on animal and human DNA.
#1lostfan 09-29-2005, 04:51 PM dharma means protection!!!! i read on another spoiler!!!!!
BurningStar4 09-29-2005, 10:28 PM Dharma means a lot of things, protection being one of them...but that is not an acronym.
Tom Chaney 10-09-2005, 07:11 PM I guess I'm a little slow because the acronym notion just occured to me. I'm inclined to indulge the theory a little. The all-caps things helps. I'm lousy with anagrams, etc. so I don't have a "solution" but might speculate a little:
DeGroot / Hanso Assessment: Resonant Magnetism Applications
OK. It works on several levels but is it worth anything?

i know it doesn't help w/ the acronyms, but i figure i'll just throw it out there anyway.;)

Thanks for the definition which I didn't know. But from what language does this word come?
Since it has a sense because the key now in the second season seems to be exactly the DHARMA project, and it seems all walks around this strange organization.
Sorry but I'm so bad with acronyms.

I really like this one! It makes sense, considering when Jack first went into the hatch and there was that huge magnetic force IN the hatch that was pulling the key around his neck... hmmmmmm:ohwell:

DharmaAndBrad 02-03-2006, 11:46 AM This reminds me of a wonderful webgame that was around a few years back, Acrophobia. I'll jump in:
DHARMA
Determined Hamsters Amputate Reluctant Monkeys' Arms
Animals conducting animal testing. That is the goal. :-)
LaughingMan 02-04-2006, 05:11 AM None of these are really serious, but I had fun making them up!
Destiny, Hope And Repentance: Mission Attainable
Decontaminated Hatch Adds Real Mystery to ABC
Direct Human Academic Research Market: Activated
..and, from my personal experience

gradyboy37 02-09-2006, 07:54 PM Maybe the DHARMA letters stand in for numbers...
D is letter 4
H is letter 8
I don't know how the 15, 16, 23, 42 come into play, but I'm trying to find out if they do.
I'll try working out some math stuff to see if I have a point or I'm overanalyzing. Most likely the latter... -Grady

shadowmachine 02-10-2006, 07:51 AM I think that DHARMA is an organization that experiments with animals and that the monster it is a product of them.
Sorry if I am wrong but I am still at the ep2x02 and still discovering lots of things about the amazing hatch.
Charlie 02-15-2006, 07:37 PM Can anyone remember what the experiments were that were mentioned on the actual Hanso Foundation website? I can't seem to find the site now...

i dont remember all of them but here are the ones i do remember, p.s. the hanso site isnt working for me anymore... www.thehansofoundation.org (http://www.thehansofoundation.org)
-. accelerated remote viewing
- juxtopositional eugenics
- extra terrestrials
- life extensions
- the dharma initiative
Charlie 02-15-2006, 08:46 PM Hm. Basically, I wondered if the acronym could be formed from the names of the experiments they were conducting.

Sole Survivor 02-23-2006, 09:09 AM Given the whole Atlantis theory I heard about on one of the www.lostcasts.com (http://www.lostcasts.com) podcasts and Magnetic stuff going on DHARMA could stand for
Device/Departmant for
Holding/Halting
Atlantis and
Resetting/Realigning
Magnetic
Attraction/Attitude/Alignment
Degroot Hanso Alternate Reality ........
someone want to finish it off for me?
stanggrrl94 02-23-2006, 01:52 PM Doesn't Have A Real Meaning Anyways ???

I like yours and dm's. It'll be interesting to find out who was right, if anyone, IF we ever do find out what it really means.
sapphic16 03-08-2006, 12:30 AM Thanks for the definition which I didn't know. But from what language does this word come?
I heard it once in my mythology class. It's a hindu word.. which refers to -- Individual obligation with respect to caste, social custom, civil law, and sacred law.
i'm not good with acronyms either.
AnalogKid 03-10-2006, 09:20 AM It seems highly likely to me that "DeGroot/Hanso" is the first part. I'm less certain about "Magnetic Anomaly" being the MA because that isn't the only reason they were on the island. It would be valid if there was just Swan station, but there isn't.

This thread really belongs in the General Theories forum where it is less likely to die

This is weird but this came to me in a dream last night. After looking at the exact definition of the word it makes PERFECT sense and helps to tie in many other ideas as well..

thoughts?
SLAVEMOM 03-18-2006, 04:19 PM I don't think it is Degroot Hanso... would Hanso (or anyone for that matter) allow his name to be listed second if he is the money and big guy behind all of this
Beady_El 03-18-2006, 09:37 PM DeGroot/Hanso Alternative Research Methodology Alliance
DeGroot/Hanso is just too irresistable...
And according to the Orientation film, didn't they say that the DeGroots founded it, and Hanso funded it?

Possibly, but then again, dharma isn't obviously known outside of the island, and the true meaning of the acronym may only be known by a select few individuals, ie. only DeGroot, Hanso and maybe one or two others, who are sworn to secrecy?
NoFNclue 05-31-2006, 01:01 AM My 2 cents.....
