I'm sure someone (or a dozen people) have already posited this theory, but I believe that the Swan on the logo signifies what the ultimate goal of the Dharma group is. Mankind right now is the "ugly duckling", and they believe that as a result of everything they are doing that mankind will make it's next step in the evolutionary/spiritual ladder.
I believe that somehow this group came across the Numbers, and came to their own conclusion that centering everything around the Numbers will bring about change.
Perhaps there was a signal from space (or from a crashed spaceship) that was emitting the numbers similar to what was happening with the notes from Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
This ties into my nearly-forgotten theory that Kate's dad has something to do with Roswell.

Interesting. I like the part about DHARMA or some association trying to change mankind from the "ugly duckling" to a swan.

Don't ask me where I found it, much too sleepy at the moment to remember, but somewhere on the net with all this Dharma stuff there was a mention about using mirrors.
Something about mirrors keeping evil out.

What you're talking about is probably the Bagua Mirror (the I Ching symbols with a mirror in the center) It is put outside houses to prevent negative Chi to enter the house :)

Ba gua (the eight sided symbol in the Dharma logo) mirrors are used in feng shui to protect your home I think.

While the mirror at the bottom of the hatch isn't shaped like this one, could it still have been put there to keep the "evil" out?

From what I remember reading, the use of mirrors was to keep out evil so yes, that is my thought with Desmond and all his mirrors to see what is down the hallway and up the shaft.
I'll find that web page again, just not tonight.
Afterall, LOST is about light vs dark, black vs white----good and evil, is it not?

At least from Locke's point of view! ;)
