Desmond got trapped inside the hatch
He was supposed to get relieved, but no one ever came
16 years ago, Jack saved Sarah, Shannon's dad got killed
A few days before, Desmond had taken his shift on the island

Danielle's ship was actually a supply ship
The crew didn't know about the real mission
The numbers they picked up were only for the captain to have an excuse for changing course
but things turned ugly and they shipwrecked
When Danielle changed the transmission, they "people in charge" stopped sending supply ships (plus the missing ship Danielle came in)
(hole in theory so far : the brand new washing machines)

Desmond is in charge of a deadman's switch. He has 108 minutes to enter the correct sequence of numbers to tell the "experiment" is still running
He takes drugs to stay fully awake during his shift, and to keep his muscle mass

The sign on the boxes (Kate uses them to get into the duct) read DI9FFTR731
if Danielle's ship was a supply ship, maybe the French were involved
FFTR => Forces Francaises de Telecommunication Radio (Radio-Telecommunications French Forces)
it wouldn't be unusual to have the acronym of the unit mentionned on such crates

he has to be getting new supplies of food
that much food cant last 16 years

I know, I'm thrilled. I was gonna mention it there (Tib's thread) when it came up. I started back on page 13 and have been reading backwards (seems appropriate)

Westinghouse - Kellogs - Dick Cheney - George Bush - Michael Moore - 911 - French Forces radio - Unit 731 - Halliburton - Nikola Tesla - Dr. Seuss - Mama Cass - New World Order - Russian guns - DARPA - Pandora (box) - Psi research - Pentagon - Iraq

lostscape Hey Cap'n,
I would bet my house that there are egocentric men playing God with experiments involving humans and energy on the island. I think Desmond is the experiment. Here's what leads me to that conclusion. We know that Desmond has to often inject himself with some sort of serum and that if he doesn’t check in at regular intervals, something really bad will happen. We also know that he thought that humanity, as we know it, had vanished, and was waiting for someone with a code to communicate (rescue?)with him. We also know that there is a great deal of magnetism on the island. Magnetism is very involved in experimental energy technology. One of the founding fathers of this form of energy was Nikola Tesla http://www.lucidcafe.com/library/96jul/teslaautobio.html Tesla was a business associate of George Westinghouse - and we know the Westinghouse label was in the hatch. There is speculation that the Philadelphia Experiment and its prodigy were derived from the Tesla coil http://www.crystalinks.com/phila.html) and that he also invented "step-up and step-down" transformers. There is so much more, but this is a start. I’ve GOT to get some work done today!! Excellent theory Jayepmills! It beautifully ties in the practice of DHARMA ("Dharma" means "protection" -- practising Buddha's teachings we protect ourself from suffering and problems) and the nefarious motives of the creators of the hatch. Here is a link to DARPA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DARPA. I think I will jump down this wormhole!!

Jayepmills When I saw the threads confirming that the logo said DHARMA, I immediatly thought of the Defense Advanced Reasearch Projects Agency or DARPA and its parent ARPA. DHARMA could be a fictional cousin to the real life agencies that have brought about many of the tech advances we have seen over the past 40 years, including the Internet. And the Korean influence could be the from the fact that the government used Korean contractors to build the island. Maybe they even built it according to feng shui because they knew people would be down there for a long time and would need all the help they could get.
My spec...DHARMA studies infectious disease and biological weapons. They built Islands that can move to travel all over the oceans staying clear of other land. On the islands, studies were made of various types of disease. Underground clean rooms were build in case of a massive outbreak on the island. Also, they were rigged to completely self destruct in case of outbreak, so a code consisting of the islands call signal had to be input into a computer system to signify that someone was still there alive and well.

johnnywishbone From 1965 through to 1970, Defense Advanced Projects Research Agency (DARPA), with up to 70-80% funding provided by the military, set in motion operation PANDORA to study the health and psychological effects of low intensity microwaves with regard to the so-called "Moscow signal." This project appears to have been quite extensive and included (under U.S. Navy funding) studies demonstrating how to induce heart seizures, create leaks in the blood/brain barrier and production of auditory hallucinations. Despite attempts to render the Pandora program invisible to scrutiny, FOIA filings revealed memoranda of Richard Cesaro, Director of DARPA, which confirmed that the program's initial goal was to "discover whether a carefully controlled microwave signal could control the mind."

USSR: New Beam Energy Possible?", possibly associated with early Soviet weather engineering efforts over the U.S. (from "Tesla's Electromagnetics and Its Soviet Weaponization" by T.E. Bearden.) According to former Reagan aide Barbara Honneger, "the fundamental reason for the increased interest is initial results coming out of laboratories in the United States and Canada that certain amplitude and frequency combinations of external electromagnetic radiation in the brain-wave frequency range are capable of bypassing the external sensory mechanism of organisms -- including humans -- and directly stimulating higher-level neuronal structures in the brain. This electronic stimulation is known to produce mental changes at a distance, including hallucinations in various sensory modalities -- particularly auditory."

gots these off a site loaded with interesting facts

Eventhough I should be working, you guys got me interested in this stuff (not that I fully understand what the heck I'm reading). I have noticed alot of articles referring to Soviet / Russian research into the use of electromagnetics and its weaponization, which brings me to this thought.......
Maybe Desmond was sharing the hatch with a Russian counterpart who was helping with the experiments.....which could explain all the russian artillery in the weapon closet.

Pentagon says Halliburton overcharged $108 million for fuel supplies in Iraq (http://goliath.ecnext.com/comsite5/bin/pdinventory.pl?pdlanding=1&referid=2750&item_id=0199-4173960&words=Pentagon_Says_Halliburton)

Dr. Seuss - Green Eggs and Ham Urban legend that Mama Cass died eating a ham sandwich. Michaels scarf/Charlies scarf

down in the hole:
love this dialog
"you’re finally here"
"well, here I am"
it's almost seussian...

Mama Cass lyric's fit with this. Another one of her songs we may hear in a future episode.
"There's a new world coming, and it's just around the bend,
There's a new world coming, this one's coming to an end.
There's a new voice calling, you can hear it if you try.
And its growing stronger with each day that passes by."

The pentagram has also become a mainstay of the New World Order conspiracy craze, where it is seen as a link between the lords of the military-industrial complex and the Masonic-Illuminati-whatever plot to rule the world. As if they needed more encouragement.

Pentagram is the shape of Desmond's patch on his shirt. *Need Cap of Charlie's driveshaft ring*

New World Order is President George HW Bush's all-time favorite phrase.

Feb 1990 -"Time and again in this century, the political map of the world was transformed. And in each instance, a New World Order came about through the advent of a new tyrant or the outbreak of a bloody global war, or its end." -President George Bush, during a speech in San Francisco.

March 17, 1992 - Pat Robertson's book [I]The New World Order published. Happy St. Patrick's Day! *Why does St. Patricks day ring a bell?*

July 1995 - Foreign Affairs quotes historian Arthur Schlesinger as declaring: "We are not going to achieve a new world order without paying for it in blood as well as in words and money."

Well I have to say, I'm buying this one. So many theories don't make sense, this one does. I always thought it was about mind control experiments. Great work!

I doubt it that Jack saved Sarah 16 years ago. Jack may be in his mid 30's right now? Subtract 16 years and that puts him too young to be a surgeon. Especially a spinal one at that.

We N.E.R.D.s have a nice collection of articles/library at the beginning of our thread. Anybody who likes what they hear in this theory might enjoy reading what we have collected over there re electromagnetism, Tesla and all the rest.

It would also make Shannon's dad quite old to be her dad.....but not impossible. He was 57 when he died and if it was 16 years ago, Shannon would have only been 4-6 at the time. But since I can't remember if it's Boone's dad and Shannon's mom that get married or the other way around....I need to watch their flashback episode again. All I remember is that he says "their parents got married" and I can't remember what she says.

That's been part of my theory, too, that Jack met Sarah and Desmond 16 years ago. But that would make Jack 44ish....so I don't know. I also think Desmond wasn't intended to be down in the hatch, I think he came upon the surviving member of the team that was supposed to be down there, he was given the password, etc. I think he was on his race around the world and shipwrecked or heard the numbers transmission....and maybe he doesn't know that the numbers transmission isn't going out anymore since Rousseau changed it.

Oh, I could talk in circles all day. :lipsseal: I'll stop now.
