View Full Version : Desmond Theory

We have heard Desmond say "brother" to Jack in two scenes. He called him "brother" in the flashback scene at the stadium (multiple times) and in the hatch. Perhaps Desmond really is Jack's brother. He also stated "I was almost a doctor once."

This leads me to my theory.

Jack & Desmond as brothers, as kids. Christian, the father, wants Desmond to be a doctor. He rebels and leaves home never to be seen again by his family. Jack now becomes the doctor at Christian's urging, even though he wasn't the apple of the father's eye or first choice to follow in the father's footsteps. (Desmond was).

When Christain was betrayed by Jack, he left for Australia, perhaps to find #1 son (Desmond). Jack's mother orders Jack to go find and bring back his father. Jack goes to Australia............ loses a father and gains a brother.

The rest remains unanswered, but the theory is plausible.

Also, I wish they had referenced the time of Jacks flashback with Desmond, relative to the crash. It seemed that most of the back stories last season happened within days or hours of the departue of the flight. However Jack appeared to be somewhat younger (bad haircut) with Desmond and Sara.

I stand corrected. I had read that it was the Carpenters in an article in a newspaper. My apologies, dangerdork.

Well, indirectly they did Jacks hospital badge had a date of 1997 on it. Not very visible but it was there.

It's fun to posit theories, but there's no way this one holds water. First, you'd have to explain why Jack doesn't treat Desmond in the stadium as someone he even knows, let alone a close relative. Did Desmond run away at a young age, what, while Jack was an infant? Second, I'd have to believe Desmond throwing the word 'brother' around was for a different reason than other Scottish people use--or else that guy from Rushmore is a close relative of Max Fischer.

It is more likely just a character quirk, and he is using it in the sense of "friend" or "comrade."

odd that Desmond would have the 2 headed bird symbol on his shirt and call people "brother". He could be a Mason....maybe he's based on the guy who wrote this

I think the use of the term brother is to symbolize what ever order he is a part of. Order being the company/organization/whatever that has him in the hatch.

Could be a character quirk as well. I guess if I thought the world was going to end and was stuck in a hole for God knows how long, I would call the first person I see brother, or sister.

Why didn't Jack want anyone to know he knew Desmond previously? Especially after Desmond let it out of the bag in front of Locke and Kate? Why the heated denial to Locke?
Why did Jack take a loaded weapon and go after Desmond amidst the crisis in the hatch to have such an off the wall conversation centered on (God not again...poor...Jack and his feelings)? Wouldn't it have made more sense to have Jack bring Desmond at gun point back to the biosphere to gain needed information on many levels about the island?
Many are hoping the character Desmond comes back to assist the group.

But Desmond is Scottish? Very Scottish accent.

How could he have been of the age to leave home and Jack not know him. Or for him to have lived in Scotland long enough to have a strong accent. ??
