first the others took the french woman's baby...then Walt... why didn't they take the baby instead? perhaps they wanted the first baby not because it was a baby, but because it would grow up into someone small enough to fit in a small space and smart enough to do ?something? in that small space. if so, where is that place and what is the task?

hope this is coherent...haven't slept in a while...

It seems odd that the Others would want Walt for his small size, when there is so much concern that the actor is growing too quickly for the role. I think the Others want to use whatever powers they think he has in order to find something of value on the island, perhaps in an underground mine connected to the hatch.

Maybe this is something TPTB are trying to use to address Walt's puberty issues.
If they send him off to the Others, he can have experiments performed on him. They can use this to explain growth spurts, etc.

I made similar speculations some time ago, before he was kidnapped, on this thread:

One of my friends had brought up the fact that the people which Echo and Jin were hiding from were children. They had really small legs and one of them had the teddy bear. The question is what would make a big person fear someone so small. The others must have done something to them. So, the question is what have they done to walt already and can he be saved if they have done something to him.

I don't know why exactly they want wlat, but i just wanted to say i think they've done something funky to those other kids.

I hope that they havent done anything seriously bad to the kids because we dont want anything bad to happen to Walt. It would be scary if Walt changed and it would certainly make Michael's life that much harder!

Interesting you mentioned puberty. Typically children who have "powers" tend to lose them--or disconnect from them--once they reach puberty. If he was taken for his powers, there isn't much time left for the Others to take advantage of them.

Perhaps once the children have reached puberty, they are disposed of because they are no longer useful to the others.

If something happened to Walt, Michael would go crazy on a mission of revenge, which would not be good. Hopefully, the kid is safe.

PS- What's up with Shannon seeing him everywhere? Any ideas?

Michael would go absolutely crazy if he found out that something happened to Walt. But perhaps he will never find out what has happened to Walt, as we know, the Others are quite secretive.

Sounds familiar to the concept of "dark materials", a trilogy by Philip Pullman. According to the story children have an affinity with "dust" (conciousness), when they reach puberty the connection grows weaker. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see on this one.

oooh, good ideas, but we don't now whether the people who took Walt are the same as the people who took Alex (though there is speculation that the girl on the boat is Alex, we don't have any proof of that yet). If they are the same group then we don't know whether they know about Aaron being born yet.

Ethan took Claire, but presumably didn't want Walt as there were plenty of opportunities to take him (he seems to have been forever wandering off with Vincent). So, it's my thinking that Ethan and any group that was working with him are not part of the same group that took Walt. Ethan may also not be part of "the others". If Danielle was involved with Claire's kidnapping/rescue then I would have thought she would have come across Ethan during this. She'd previously said that she'd never seen "the others". Of course, she is crazy :) but I think there may be quite a lot of different groups on the island (maybe 6 ;)). We've seen how easy it is to hide from people (Danielle was only found because of Sayid's walk round the island, none of the tailenders had been found before now [assuming they are on the same island], Desmond's hatch was found seemingly randomly).

So many questions :)
