View Full Version : Desmond/Hurley Connection?
dzdconfsed 10-05-2005, 01:41 AM This may be totally far fetched, but something in a Hurley thread made me think of this and I haven't seen it anywhere else yet. What if Desmond was driven batty by the numbers too, which is what lead him to be down in the hatch? Leonard and Sam were somewhere in the South Pacific when they heard them and it ended up driving them both crazy in different parts of the world. It would be possible that Desmond heard them also and had his own interpretation of what they meant. He is highly intelligent, but seems a very faith based person, potentially making him easier to manipulate by the right suggestions.
And who is the one person on the island that would probably immediately know the answer to "What does one snowman say to another"? To me, Hurley. Could the numbers be used to provide a steady stream of "watchers" or "guardians" of the hatch over a period of years?
theemonopolyguy 10-05-2005, 04:11 PM That makes a lot of sense to me. Although the only thing is who are Leonard and Sam. Although, will Hurley ever meet Desmond? In another thread there talking about what will happen to him and i think he gets captured by "The Others"
diabolo237 10-05-2005, 04:14 PM Leonard and Sam were introduced in Numbers (one by name, one in the institution)
diabolo237 10-05-2005, 04:16 PM And hey, monopolyguy, I'm in Philly too
JAZZYJ 10-05-2005, 04:22 PM I hope Hurley and Desmond get to have a nice long talk about the numbers. Sit down and have a cup of coffee and really hash things out. Because as we know Hurley wants some friggin answers.
jbdean 10-05-2005, 05:25 PM At first the idea sounds like it might work but then I think: How could Desmond have figured out all the numbers and their use in the computer by just hearing them and going a bit wonky over them? And why would he start injecting himself with the "medicine" if he had no idea what it was for? I think all of that shows us that he was told how to use the computer and what the "meds" are for. And I'm not even really sure if he know what the significance of the numbers is.
But I do think that it would be cool for Desmond and Hurely to meet and talk because Desmond may be very surprised to find out the other "uses" of those numbers!
sheba 10-05-2005, 05:29 PM hmmm ...

Skybluelost 10-05-2005, 10:33 PM great post and theory, valid points because..... Leonard and Sam worked for the U.S. Navy...they were stationed at a listening post picking up one way transmissions over pacific....really boring job until the night they picked up the transmission of the numbers... another thing may be nothing but last year building the raft jin asks hurly for help tying the bamboo together, hurley responds to jin... what do you want to make snowballs....:-)

jbdean 10-06-2005, 02:13 AM So, looks like Hurely and Desmond never even got to meet! But I think they'll be friends since Desmond left them all of his food! ;)

After seeing this week's episode...I gotta agree with you about Desmond just hearing the numbers and going bonkers over them. But I still think that he and Hurley have at least a connection in that the numbers drive them, perhaps each in their own way, to some type of conclusion or cycle. I think both are faith driven in maybe a deeper way than even Locke is, without even realizing it about themselves. Both have deeply believed what others, i.e. Lenny or Calvin, said without any real proof and have faithfully searched or followed information that was imparted to them, leading them to places that they never expected, but yet are somehow prepared for if not mentally, at least spiritually. Hurley only knows that the numbers are bad from Lenny and all Desmond knows is that if he doesn't keep typing the numbers in, something bad will potentially happen thanks to Calvin and the film. To me, a huge leap of faith for both of them and out of the ordinary for a majority of the population.
And I would totally love to have Desmond and Hurley have a nice chat over some hot coco and finally get some friggen answers!

Thank you for your kind remarks  And excellent recall on the Hurley quote in particular  I had totally forgotten that one.

Well, since Desmond made it out alive (thank goodness!), perhaps we will have that scene of he and Hurley talking about the numbers. If anyone would listen and not think Hurley crazy, it would be Desmond.

I think you are totally right....I think Desmond would understand Hurley more than anyone else on the island and maybe back in the real world too, if there is still such a place now.
I gotta get a laugh out of a conversation between those two tho....the "Bratha" 's and "Dude" 's would flying
BTW...I'm SO happy they didn't kill Desmond! Seeing more of his personality this week, not to mention his gorgeous eyes, makes me hope they bring him back real soon

where is desmond going...guess he thinks he has been replaced and not needed anymore...does anyone think to follow him, he may know something we don't know...maybe the nearest boat, new hatch, large underground fallout shelter...maybe he should ask hurley he probably owns a company that specializes in that exact venture....lol...

TheLocke&DesmondFiles 10-09-2005, 05:40 PM Hey since Larry knows the numbers wut if Larry wus part of the Dharma Initiative and had his partner die (like Kelvin died on Desmond) and went insane from stayin up so much (thus y the #'s r "cursed"), and Kelvin finally arrived and Larry wus so mentally unstable they shipped him off to an institution.
Cormak 10-10-2005, 10:44 AM I think this is a fantastic theory. I love reading what others think of the show.
It certainly would be interesting to have Hurley and Desmond meet and talk. I think Desmond might be surprised that other people know about the numbers and the effect the numbers have had on them. And didn't Danielle say they heard some numbers being transmitted?
I don't know about anyone else, but the numbers are driving me a bit batty myself! I'd like to know what they mean. I don't remember where I heard it but someone was saying the numbers might be longitude and latitude numbers for the island. That might be another interesting twist.
As for the numbers on Desmond's bottle that he injects himself with, I think it might be something to combat the electromagnetic properties of that concrete wall that makes his fillin's hurt. I'm sure being exposed to that on a day to day basis is not healthy.
We need to know more! this show is like a drug. Anyone else find when they sit down and watch it, that it's the fastest hour ever?
lockeisthekey 10-17-2005, 08:14 PM what did one snowman say to the other snowman?
FREEZE!
I just hope Des hasn't gone over to where Jin, James, and Michael are--that might
prove to be very painful for him.
dave3011 10-17-2005, 11:23 PM Whoa, good theory.
