Very interesting and telling words from Locke's father. Interesting to see this with what we know about Sawyer and his backstory.

But what is the writer's point in putting this? Are we supposed to make some connection between Sawyer and Locke now?

It was a random theory last season that Locke's father may have been 'Sawyer'. I wonder if this was another clue that this is true. Or are we supposed to just see a connection that two people on the island were victims of a con that completely changed their lives.

And if you notice besides the theme of Leap of Faith this episode, pretending and Coning someone was also a theme. We have first Locke's father, then Ana pretending to be a prisoner and then Jack wanting to believe that Desmond was conned into manning the hatch.

Any thoughts?

When Locke's father said that, I immediately thought "Sawyer!", but who knows. We could just be thinking too much into this. :)

I may have to remind it to listen...but didn't he say "you think you're the only one who's ever been conned?" and not "you think you were my first con?"

I thought he was basically just telling Locke that he was naive...and that it happens to everybody because that's how the world works.

Good catch! I get so wrapped up in the plot that I usually miss these things,

My VCR is messed up and was unable to tape. I am calling Dish Network tomorrow and upgrading to DVR.

I can't remember how he phrased it but my mind went to this possibility...

Perhaps this guy isn't really his father. Perhaps he just did enough research to find someone with a compatible blood type and then pulled a con on him somehow.

I do think he said, "You think you were the first person who ever got conned?", but still, he did pull off that con very well. And we don't know the situation that begot Locke. I do wonder if he might be the real Sawyer.

The TIVO doesn't lie:

"Why?" John Locke asks.

His father answers, "There is no why. You think you're the first person that ever got conned?. You needed a father figure, and I needed a kidney. And that's what happened. Get over it. And John, don't come back; you're not wanted."

Ohhh thanks. I still wonder if there was something behind that. He pulled it off perfectly, and he definetly had a history with Lockes mom.

If they are even his parents at all.

The whole "You needed a father figure" made me believe that maybe he isn't Locke's father at all, but just a con man who needed a kidney.

I could be wrong..but doesn't a kidney have to come from someone whose kidney wouldn't be rejected? or something like that. I don't know the medical stuff really, but I don't think you can just take any old kidney.

It doesn't HAVE to be a relative...but isn't there a better chance of success if it is?

They very much prefer it to be a relative, and I dont think the guy would have went through all that trouble for a 'maybe' deal.

If its not his father it may have been a relative. Plus I guess for it not to be his father the investigator Locke hired would have had to be in on it.

I'm pretty sure that Locke said he met his biological father through his mother, so actually his mother would have to be in on it.

But didnt he hire someone to track down his father? And his 'mother' tell Locke after it all that she was told he had to search for him. I think she was just the bait.

Sorry, I'm not sure I followed you. But I thought Locke said that his mom found him, and that he met his dad through his mom. I could be wrong.

That's what I thought I heard as well.

:) In Deus ex Machina it appeared he was baited by his mom to search for his dad. He then hired an investigator to hunt him down. There was a scene with him where the investigator tried to talk him out of meeting with his dad as well.

I keep hoping his dad will reject the kidney and DIE.
