Anyone have any theories on what the incident was that was aluded to in the film? What could have happened to cause them to have to execute the numbers every 108 minutes?

I am still trying to process all the info that came from this ep. But the incident has me intrigued.

Yet another mystery that will require 25 flashbacks to unravel...

I'm thinking there was no "incident".

As crazy as Jack was acting in this episode, I hate to agree with him. I imagine it was probably some sort of psych experiment. Not sure of this of course, just an obvious possibility.

Just mind games is my bet. I think Jacks right, nothing bad will happen if the buton doesn't get pushed.

edit to add: just saw your post Chris, my thoughts exactly!

I think mind games as well.

Did anyone else want them NOT to push the button, or was it just me?

My theory is that "the incident" involved the death of the two professors who were in the Orientation video. I bet they're our Adam and Eve. Maybe "the sickness" was released and they caught it and died and there was mass panic and polar bears got out and killed people.

ETA - I also think that it's a psychological experiment.

I think the execute button is the button that Walt was referring to when he appeared to Shannon. He was saying not to push it, so it must obviously do something bad every time it is pushed. Maybe not pushing it will stop the bad thing that happens.
One of my theories is that the Dharma experiments are producing negative effects, and the only way to stop it all is to let the countdown reach zero. "Don't push the button."

Actually I think the island will be sunk if the counter is allowed to reach zero. And since there's no longer any way to completely secure the bunker, everybody would drown. Remember the tide rising in one of the previous episodes? Who's to say that didnt happen on the original part of the island when the timer counted down again.

The ever growing alarms as the timer counts down makes me wonder though.

haha me too... but at the same time I was yelling "Not 32, 42! 42!" when Locke entered the numbers wrong.

I wanted to see if there was like a "moo" or a "quack" if he pressed execute with the 32 plugged in there. Like "Let's Make a Deal"- what happens when you make the wrong choice.

Im thinking that all these different experiments kind of crossed in the wrong way....and things started happening.

Something definitely happened. It would be a let down if it was just some psycho head trip, but then again (Conscious 03.09).

BWAH!

I am seriously LMAO here.

However, I also didn't want them to push the button. What's funny is: While Locke considers himself to be a man of faith, it was actually Jack who wanted to trust his instincts - against what he'd been told - and not push that button.

i vote for a goat - if you enter the wrong numbers you win a goat. with a cart.

You people really think "mind games"???

Come on...all this time and money and effort....for mind games??

How do you explain all the strange things going on?....This is Jack being his usual faithless self......and just being IMO completely dumb.

He's survives a plane crash that NO ONE should of lived through....sees all these crazy things...then finds a hatch buried in the ground in the middle of this jungle thats in the middle of no where....goes down into it...finds a man...(who he's met...by the way)...computers all kind of stuff.....and yet he still thinks "oh nothing strange is going on".....give me a break.

The incident I bet involves the two scientists.. blonde lady & fat fro-head bearded guy as I like to call them. I swear they were the Others on the ship!

Good points but I'm not saying that all the stuff thats going on on the island is mind games, just Desmond being conned into thinking that he has to press that button every 108 minutes.

I think it comes down to the "faith" aspects of the show. But i do find it odd that a guy came running out of the jungle after desmond crashed, and told him all that...and desmond just goes along with it, and has been down there all along....I do agree thats odd. But i figure that the guy (kelvin) i think...must of been pretty convincing.

And anybody notice that every ship or plane that seems to come around the island...happens to crash?

Yea it IS odd that Kelvin knew Desmonds boat crashed but Desmond had no clue that a commercial jet liner crashed... I originally thought Kelvin was conned too but now I'm not so sure he wasn't doing the conning. But then again he did stay with Desmond and eventually die so I don't know what to think really.

yea theres gotta be something to it.
