Is it possible that the man in the institutional ward where Hugo first heard the numbers used to be on the island? Something bad or frightening may have happened to him and all he can remember is the numbers because he had put them in the computer time and time again. Just something I was wondering, what do you think!

I keep thinking the same thing... That he came back from the island, was consumed by the numbers (having typed them in repeatedly), and everyone thought he was crazy...

But why would they help Hurley to win the lottery?

hmmm...

What a great idea. Maybe entering the numbers every 108 m inutes made him snap. After all, maybe it is just some psychology experiment. People like Kelvin are forced to think that the world will end if they don't push the button and the guy that Hurley got the numbers from totally snapped so they sent him away.
The only wierd thing would be why would the numbers be in the lottery.

*Confused*

Weren't Lenny and Mr. Toomey stationed somewhere for the Navy? Or does everyone think that's just their cover story? I thought the explanation went, they heard the numbers and used them for their own gain. Toomey shot himself; Lenny went nuts. Or am I misremembering? *g*

The story Mrs. Toomey told Hurley was that Lenny and Sam were stationed at a listening post in the Pacific and night after night heard nothing but static until...the numbers were broadcast and they picked it up. After that, Sam used them to win a carny game and $50,000 and on the way home...got in a wreck that saw his wife lose her leg...he then became obsessed with them and finally put a shotgun in his mouth. All we know about Lenny is that story and he was in the hospital with Hurley (as was Locke's mom...did you catch that one?)

You are remembering correctly.

They were stationed at a listening post. ... or were they?

Perhaps that is the "official" cover story for what they were actually doing. Perhaps the island has military connections and they were stationed there.

I agree with this. I think they (Sam and Lenny) were on the island either doing a 540 day stretch in the hatch or perhaps their *mission* was to remotely observe or "listen" to the goings on, in the hatch. Either way, I think the isolation drove Lenny mad before their relief arrived. Thus he ended up institutionalized.

I'm thinking maybe their listening post was simply picking up the transmissions that the Swan was making every 108 minutes.

If that's the case, then maybe its pure coincidence that the numbers have been used to win money on two occasions. And if that's true, then maybe the numbers aren't even all that significant, aside from being imprinted on the Swan's hatch and entered into the computer/transmitted. And there's always the possiblity that DHARMA simply used a code to identify each station, and had each station enter that code into their computer. That would explain why the numbers appear on the hatch AND as the computer code.

If this is all true, then the numbers significance is seriously diminished!

Unless I'm forgetting an occurance of the numbers somewhere...:undecide: ?

Ok, I'm feeling better now. Thanks for the support, folks. I forgot it was called a "listening station." I wonder. If the Swan station is supposed to put the numbers into the computer every 108 minutes, is a different station supposed to broadcast them every x minutes? And is the listening station a part of Dharma or something altogether different?

RShaneG: The numbers come up in Hurley's life a little too often for me to dismiss it as coincidence. Particularly in his race to get to the plane: were the numbers trying to stop him?

Don't know if you saw...but in his race to the plane...Hurley passed a group of female soccer players...their jersey numbers? 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42...I think the numbers were trying to keep him off the plane...

i don't have the screen caps..sorry...just watched the DVD again and yep...there they are...is that weird or what? I missed it the first time and read TV Guides episode recaps and they pointed it out so I went back and watched it. Those damn things pop up everywhere...they have to mean more than has been touched as to this point...

Yeah, the Lost-media site doesn't have that particular screen-cap. I bet if you look through the Exodus, Part 2 thread, you'll find one.

I'll see what I can find. :)

Remember...the woman that drew those numbers on TV was the same woman with Sawyer in his flashback during the "Outlaws" show last year...WHY???

It could be important, but it could also simply be nepotism. The producers giving Harold's wife some work so she doesn't have to leave Hawaii to get it.
