View Full Version : How do you fix a computer using a jar of Black and White rocks?
silveranswer 10-06-2005, 01:49 AM When Desy was freaking out about the computer being broken he looked for a jar of black and white rocks. Jack took it from him while he was demanding an explanation.
How do rocks fix a computer?
thebridgeisover 10-06-2005, 01:50 AM He went looking for it before he even starting repair the computer and then Im not even sure if he took it or not.... how do rocks fix a computer?
lackofabetternick 10-06-2005, 01:51 AM LOL... I thought this was going to be a joke. Guess not.
wilekiyote 10-06-2005, 01:52 AM I once had a e-machine that I wanted to smash with a rock.
LockeLove 10-06-2005, 01:52 AM I don't remember the rocks but I do find it interesting what Sayid said about the comp. He said the motherboard had been replaced. Now how could he do that if he has no outside contact or connections to recent supplies and technology?

I wondered the EXACT same thing. It's not like motherboards are just born. He had to have gotten it from somewhere, or from someONE.

Unless he's the professor from Gilligan's Island. But that would be INSANE. There has to be more to it!
BTW, I've been trying to get my bro to watch LOST and he keeps calling it Gilligan's Island. :(

Here's what he was trying to do with them. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacus)

But if Desmond was only down there for 3 years.. then he'd have a pretty new computer right? But on the theory board..
Oh here's the link, I don't want to type it all out hehehe http://forums.go.com/abc/primetime/lost/thread?threadID=583378&forumStart=30
So how could everything in the hatch get so dirty after 3 years? We don't know how long Kyle was in the hatch though, so it could well be 20 years. and our first scene in the hatch (Ep. 1) we only saw the back of the mans head (who we thought was Desmond) so it could've been Kyle, which explains the dirtyness and the 1980's computers.
the end.
LockeLove 10-06-2005, 02:05 AM Well according to his explanation, he was basically pulled down there. Remember he said he was shipwrecked, so he probably didn't have anything with him. He doesn't explain any of the food in the pantry.
darkpiranha 10-06-2005, 02:08 AM No one's mentioned it yet, but Adam and Eve had black and white rocks with them...
timdorr 10-06-2005, 02:16 AM They're not rocks. Here's a closeup of the jar: http://timdorr.com/images/Lost/notrocks.jpg

He probably replaced it with a spare part of the same thing. I assume if whatever the countdown leads to is so important, you'd have spare parts on hand.

If you look at it when it's in Desmond's or Jack's hand it looks and sounds like rocks.
I can't do the screen cap thing- did anyone else notice this?
Also, I wish Desmond had offered an explanation of the injections.
Butterkup 10-06-2005, 11:08 AM He was only down there for three years but there were people there from a long time before who might have brought extra stuff like motherboard?
but still why didn't the newer recruits bring down newer hardware?

we don't know why Kelvin died- could have been old age!
Butterkup 10-06-2005, 11:13 AM We never know nothing LOL!
Most likely there has to be some sinister thing behind it just to drive us crazy trying to figure THAT out! :ohwell:
Vertical 10-06-2005, 11:13 AM I'm assuming that there were spare computer components down there. A spare motherboard isn't an outlandish thing to stock.
What IS outlandish is that Desmond would know how to replace it, since he was apparently just joe schmo athlete before arriving, and presumably hadn't ever had to replace the motherboard before. How did he know what to do?
Butterkup 10-06-2005, 11:17 AM He was down there with Calvin a while before he died maybe he taught him just in case? But wouldn't Calvin have been part of a team - what happened to the other person that he needed to keep Desmond? Did they get "sick" and die?
conspiricytheory 10-06-2005, 11:23 AM He said that he and Calvin were down there saving the world for a while and things were good during that time. You'd have to think he picked up a few things like fixing a PC in that time, even if he knew nothing about PC's when he showed up. In reality, he obiously didn't know much since he basically did it wrong and Sayid fixed it.
BrownEyedGrrl 10-06-2005, 11:31 AM Hmmm, I must have missed the jar of rocks. I thought it was just a jar of little tools and whatnot.
But, I think that we are far from the real story behind what anyone was doing in the hatch. That orientation film was dated 1980, it stated that the project was first concieved in 1970, but the choice of music and other decor tries to give the impression of the hatch having been used since the 1960's. Then Desmond says that Calvin/Kelvin "died while waiting for his replacements" trying to give the impression that Calvin/Kelvin had been there for so long he died of old age or something. If he was so old that he could only hold on for three more years (the time that Desmond claims to have been down there), I can't imagine any research company having placed him in there in the first place. And notice that Desmond didn't answer Jack's question as to how he could have no contact with the Dharma company but still be recieving food and supplies...
Butterkup 10-06-2005, 01:39 PM Something very fishy up with Desmond. Very good points you just made.

And didn't Sayid fix it fast?! He's amazing! When they get rescued, he can get a job fixing computers and make tons of money!
Tom Chaney 10-07-2005, 05:22 AM The motherboard could have been replaced in the computer before it was even installed into the hatch. Nothing says it had to be brand new at the time. Or... maybe it wasn't quite powerful enough as manufactured and was modified by Hanso to be appropriate for its intended use in the hatch.

How do rocks fix a computer?
Those weren't rocks, those were screws and other items that he'd use to replace things ... like circuts. When Jack holds the jar out, you can see the silver screws or bolts.

Easy. There could have been a back-up mother board already there. I'm sure they anticipated the computer possibly breaking down at some point.

Sayid wouldn't know when it was replaced. Maybe it was replaced by Calvin.

As for Desmond not having outside contact ... if you rewatch the film (you can view it from here: http://img223.imageshack.us/my.php?image=videostream9bd.swf ) you'll hear, near the very end, the man speaking says something like "and be sure not to use the computer for [film skips]," It sounds like "they" told them not to use the computer for contacting someone because it would mess up the real use and they believed him.

I'm in charge of a High Availability netwrok, even though we have support contracts with 4 hour parts replacement gurantees from the manufacturers, we have spare parts new in the box sitting on shelves in case of failure.
Knight of Nih 10-09-2005, 12:15 AM One thingy bothers me. There's another Apple in the living area near Desy's bunk. So, why not type in the code there. The orientation video also doesn't refer to the second computer. The one handed doctor shows the mock up of the dome to make his point about pushing the button at the 4 minute mark.
goddessblue 10-09-2005, 12:32 AM Sayid wouldn't know when it was replaced. Maybe it was replaced by Calvin.
Exactly! I was going to post this, but decided to read through the thread in case someone pointed this out already. Great minds, jbdean!
Sayid says "He replaced the motherboard." But Sayid doesn't know who the he he's referring to is at that point. It could very well have been Calvin.
Michelle Friday 10-09-2005, 02:28 AM Sayid is so calm about every thing, I really dig him!
I wonder what happened to Kelvin's roomie before Des?
I did notice that Des didn't answer Jack about the food; and what could
possibly be "lovely" about sitting down there in a hole entering a code
number 24/7?? I would think it sucked and rather be dead and have it
over with that live down there til the end of my life. Ugh!!
Marcus 10-09-2005, 06:42 AM I once had a e-machine that I wanted to smash with a rock.

I thought there was another computer in the living area, too! When Desmond hops out of bed, he goes right to the chair and slides up to the computer. True, we didn't see the surrounding area but I can't see him sliding like that into the dome area, which is kind of around the corner. But who knows ... it is fun to slide across a room on a chair! ;)
But being serious now, perhaps the one in the dome area was like the "main frame" the main CPU. With all those data processing units in there, that's a strong possibility.

Desmond was being sarcastic.
Sayid is a funny character
Lostaway - "Hurry hurry we need help"
(is taken inside the hatch from a new 'safe' way)
Lostaway - "Fix this computer"
Sayid - - "Eeeh alright"
(dont ask silly questions, like why, how etc etc)
He just assume there are correct parts laying around. Sorta funny, but very odd.
------------------------
Lostaway - "Hold this stick of nitroglycerin"
Sayid - "Eeeh ok"
Lostaway - "u ever heard bon jovi ?
Sayid - "yeah?"
Lostaway - "Whats the favorite song ?"
Sayid - "JUMP"
(BOOOM)
-------------------
Another thing, if they came with new machinery like washer and dryer and blenders and shit, couldnt they perhaps have... like ... updated the computer. A computer standing in such dusty enviroment would brake up sooner then later...
---------
Just rambeling, ignore me... tired like hell

Well, Sayid wouldn't need to ask how ... he's the tech wizard. And Desmond left the tools sitting right next to the computer.

IMO the blender and other machinery I dont think is new anymore either. I'm still going with the theory that theopening sequence of Ep 1 this season was from when the project was in its newness still.
