View Full Version : Electromagnetic Station / Book on Shelf

When Locke was examining the book "The Turn of the Screw" from the bookshelf, I noticed another, clearly labeled book, sitting close to it. The book is titled "ECG Workout: Exercises in Arrhythmia Interpretation" and can be found on Amazon.com at:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0781731925/002-9297708-8500832?v=glance
A screen capture of the book can be found here:
http://lost-media.com/modules/coppermine/albums/ep-caps/season2/2x03-orientation/4/orientation-cap159.jpg
The book was published in 2001 which might help to establish a time frame for when the last visit to the hatch from outside sources occurred. Additionally, I find this book important for two primary reasons: 1) it helps to further solidify that this hatch (station #3 - the swan) is indeed the electromagnetic experiment and 2) that Desmond's excercise allows him to remain healthy and counteract the negative effects of the electromagnetic field. Electromagnetic fields disrupt the natural operation of the human heart and cause irregular heart beats and ultimately, arrhythmias. Google "arrhythmias" and "electromagnetic" or check out the following link for more information:
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12397004&dopt=Abstract
Whether or not Desmond is aware of the negative effects of the field is unknown. The book may have been carried in by another hatch operator prior to Desmond's arrival. However, I believe Desmond said that he and Calvin had "pushed the button" for 3 years, until Calvin eventually died. That means that if Desmond didn't bring the book and Calvin hadn't carried it in during the past 3 years, it was on the shelf before Desmond arrived. Since the book was published in 2001 and we know that at least 3 years had elapsed since Desmond came upon the hatch, then we can assume that the year of the present events is at least 2004.
Just some thoughts - I could be right, I could be wrong. The fun is in the speculation.
CybeRise 10-06-2005, 02:23 AM Thanks man, good read.
biggestmuff 10-06-2005, 02:27 AM good catch

Nice first post
Locke tells Desmond they crashed 44 days ago. Oceanic (Disney sponsored site) states the plane left Sydney on Sept 22, 2004. By my count that made the scene in 'Adrift', Nov 4th 2004------and now that the sun has come up (don't think the characters are considering midnight change of day/date) this episode took place on Nov 5th.
torb28 10-06-2005, 03:52 AM Great first post, and thanks for the date followup, Nay815.

Nice catch...so Desmond was working out to counter act the effects of the electromagnetic field in the hatch. I wonder how long all the survivors can stay down there then?!?! It should be interesting to see how that gets worked out. I can see Sayid figuring this out/reading the book and breaking the bad news to everyone.....if it is the case.
MikeToth 10-06-2005, 07:09 AM It might be that Desmond, being "almost a doctor", is interested in this. Picked up a copy during his "race around the world", and had it with him when the boat crashed on the island. The plane crashed in 2004, and Desmond said he's been on the island for 3 years. So, that puts it to 2001.
First poster : The book left to the Exercises in Arrhythmia Interpretation book, its kinda fuzzy however after sharpening i think it has the name JUNE 7003 something plus Something else blurry... no idea if this is anything important, or just me with to much spare time...
ADDflower 10-06-2005, 08:23 AM I happen to own that book, but didn't notice it on the shelf. The book was vital to me in becoming an emergnecy department nurse. Desmond was going to be a doctor and the book really is a workout. Maybe he had it... interpreting EKGs is kinda like sudoku. *grin*
ELTaino74 10-06-2005, 08:38 AM Great catch there DaVinci135. Excellent way to join thefuselage.com

If they're like Sudoku, I'm glad I never went for it. My brain hurts doing a 9 box puzzle.
But, I remember hearing on the audio commentary that, and I can't remember if it was JJ or Damon, that they have a spinal surgeon friend that told them a similiar story to what Jack tells Kate, along with the 5 second counting for fear.
So, it's very possible that they asked, "what books are on your shelf?" type of questions.
Just an observation.
LuvMySayid 10-06-2005, 11:16 AM Could heart trouble be the sickness? Might Danielle have killed the members of her team in a form of mercy killing because they were suffering? Would the arrythmias cause any painful heart symptoms? What symptoms would they cause? Oh, and welcome to the 'Lage.
Luv
DaVinci135 10-06-2005, 05:45 PM Hi shma. I noticed that book as well, but I haven't had time since I posted the initial observation to sharpen the photo. Perhaps someone with a HD screen capture, a copy of photoshop, and a few minutes of free time would like to play with it. I will take a peek at it when I get home from work tonight, but until then - I've been leaning towards:
(Unknown) | JUNE 2002 | VOLUME 4
I've noticed many other small details such as that one since the first episode. After finally deciding to join this forum, I guess I'll have to post some more of them. My line of work calls for extreme attention to detail, so I have a good time picking the small aspects of the show apart. Some really intriguing writing taking place here.
MikeToth 10-06-2005, 09:37 PM About Arrhythmia. I got this off of the American Heart Assoc (http://http://www.americanheart.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=10845). website:
Rapid heart rhythms account for the great majority of sudden cardiac deaths.
