Everything in the hatch screams mid '70's to me.
We know Desmond has been there since 2001 (if we believe his story) and it is now 2004 on the Island for the characters. How long this Kelvin (or whatever the name was) had been there before Desmond arrived we do not know.
The film looks old to me......early '80's at best. Was there a date on the film?
Wasn't one of the founders of this Dharma mentioned to have died in 1980 or did I misunderstand that?

I'm not sure about someone dying. I did catch at the end of the film it
said something like "Dharma Industries..1980" Or something along those lines.
I did catch the 1980 though. Rewound it and made sure!

Thank you, Alaskabean
So no way, I would judge, that Kelvin could have been there 21 years before Desmond arrived.

I suppose he "could" have been...death would have been a pretty welcome thought at that
point!! But you wouldn't think that he had been there that long.
With all the food and large stock pile of medicine, I would say someone is
keeping the place well stocked..

Or had been. That box that Kate took the candy bars out of looked really old to me.
Agree about the death being welcome if he had been.

Didn't the guy on the film say that not long after the experiments began, there was an "incident" and since then, they have had to enter the codes and push the execute button... I wonder what that was...

He said they have had to follow some kind of protocol and I couldn't make it out.
Its been driving me crazy too!! If anyone else figured out what he said please...
for gods sake man, POST IT!!!
I have to assume though, that we weren't supposed to be able to make out
what he said.

Yes, he did!
By the hatch interior are we to conclude that the experiments started in the mid '70's?
That is an Apple II computer. 1975 or maybe as late as 1977.
The film skipping is irritating, isn't it Alaskabean?

"The Dharma Initiative: "Welcome, I'm Dr. Marvin Candle and this is the
orientation film for Station 3 of the ...arma Initiative. In a moment,
you'll be given a simple set of instructions for how you and your
partner will fulfill the responsibilities associated with this station.
But first, a little history. The Dharma Initiative was created in 1970
and is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot - two doctoral
candidates at the University of Michigan. Following in the footsteps of
visionaries such as B.F. Skinner... imagined a large-scale communal
research compound, where scientists and free thinkers from around the
globe persue research in meterology, psychology, parapsychology,
zoology, electromagnetism and utopian social... reclusive Danish
industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso, who financial backing
made their dream of a multipurpose social science research facility a
reality. You and your partner are currently located in Station 3 or the
Swan and will be for the next 540 days. Now Station 3 was originally
constructed as a laboratory where scientists could work to understand
the unique electromagnetic fluctuations emanating from this sector of
the island. Not long after the experiments began, however, there was an
incident. And since that time, the following protocol has been observed.
Every 108 minutes, the button must be pushed. From the moment the
alarm sounds, you will have 4 minutes to enter the code into the
microcomputer... processor... induction into the program. When the alarm
sounds, either you or your partner must input the code. It is highly
recommended that your and your partner take alternating shifts. In this
manner, you will both stay as fresh and alert... utmost importance, that
when the alarm sounds, the code be entered correctly and in a timely
fashion. Now do not attempt to use the computer for anyth...
Congratulations, until your replacements arrive, the future of the
project is in your hands. On behalf of the DeGroots, Alvar Hanso, and
all of us at the Dharma Initiative, Thank You, Namaste, and Good Luck."

I liked the part about not using the computer for anything (else?). Did anyone notice that when Sayid flipped the switch, the image came up almost immediately with the >:| cursor? Besides the fact that that monitor would take a while to come up from a full down status, and the fact that those green screens have such a tendancy to burn out the phosphor in a quick time, so the cursor wouldn't even be seen, that there was no "power on" screen. Just went to the cursor. So, they burnt the program onto a PROM, and replaced the normal OS hardwired into the Apple II +. So, you couldn't use it for anything else. (I know. That's what the graphics department is for. )
