Just got to thinking... Desmond supposedly didn't know about this plane crash because he doesn't get out much due to the whole 108 minute countdown thing. Now, we're assuming he's telling the truth and we can take that at face value (and that's another discussion unto itself!). If so, did he know about The Others? Sounds like he was grabbed by Calvin/Kelvin as soon as he crashed on the island. In that case, he probably hhadn't seen The Others. But then if he didn't know about them, why did he get locked and loaded when Locke and Kate were entering the hatch? Ok, I'd be a little on edge too, if someone blew my door open and dropped in, but didn't this guy think he was alone? Wouldn't he welcome company? Heck, maybe those replacements finally showed up!

And another thing, the other entrance didn't have "Quarantine" on it. If the Quarantine sign was to keep him in, rather than out, wouldn't it be on both doors? And wouldn't he know the world wasn't contaminated since he was out and about in it for, oh I don't know, his entire life?!? Crack those doors and get some fresh air in there...unless you know of The Others...

That's a good question. Why would Desmond lie? I can't think of a reason why he would need to.

I don't think Desmond is lying, but he's being selective with the info. He got locked a loaded when he heard boom because it scared the bejeesus out of him and he hasn't seen anyone else for a long time. For Pete's sake he's living in a hatch with no sun light or human contact and has had less than two hours of continuous sleep for god knows how long and thinks that he's responsible for the continuance of the human race. You'd be a little weirded out in that case too, especially with a clearly unhinged man pointing a gun in your face.
