I just had a thought. We've all been throwing the idea around of a Skinneresque psychological experiment as an explanation for what is going on in the hatch. But, something kept sticking me in the back of my head (and, dang, I wish my co-worker would stop poking me with her pen:rolleyes: ).
Anyway, Hanso first started out as an arms dealer - first in WW II and then to NATO after the war. What munitions company completely turns around to start some benevolent work to make the world a better place. What if, that is just a cover for what Hanso is really experimenting with - some type of massive weapon.
Why else would this huge island be such a secret? Remember in Exodus, the rafters were surprised at how big the island is and then Sawyer (?) said how could anyone have missed this huge island. Somehow, Hanso has been able to shield the island from prying eyes. Why is that important if this is just a psychology study.
In addition, why have a psychology experiment all the way down in some out-of-the-way South Pacific island. Couldn't you just kidnapp people of the street and thrown them into the same structure, except on some sound stage?
The big boo-boo that threw a monkey wrench into the project? Perhaps, at the filming of the movie, Hanso was trying to fix this big weapon, but it really go away from them. Either, the executives at Hanso have disappeared - distancing themselves from the project - or they were killed by the problem.
