Here's a theory that I think will be worth your time:
So we all know that every character in the show, previous to the crash, was at a crisis in their lives: hurley haunted by bad luck, locke being conned by anyone who breathes oxygen, Sawyer and his parents/killing an innocent man, Kate and the law/killing an innocent man, charlile, Jack, Claire, Shannon, Michale, Jin/Sun -- THEY'RE ALL HURTING BIG TIME. Now to get to the point.
THEY ALL PAID/AGREED TO BE ON THE ISLAND. The lost island is the ultimate in 'second chances' as Locke is already quite convinced.
Let's take Locke as an example. Perchance it to say that after the fiasco with his 'father/mother', Locke found Helen (true love without deception); and let's just say that Locke and Helen were in a horrible car accident that took Helen's life leaving Locke alive- and unhurt. Locke feels tremendous guilt which induces hysterical paralysis (he only thinks he can't walk). He looks for sollace in the pseudo Helen from the 1-900 number. Her rejection of Locke, along with the humiliation he suffers from being rejected by the Walkabout leads Locke into a suicidal panic. Before he can put himself out of his misery, Locke sees and add for the Hanso Foundation and their promise for a second chance in life. Locke then goes to the Hanso Foundation i.e. the Dharma Initiative. The Hanso Foundation promises to give Locke a second chance to live the life he was 'destined' to live. Locke agrees to the conditions set forth by the foundation to participate in the Dharma Initiative's program.
Here's their plan:
The Dharma Initiative gives an intense screening process in which they test their possible participant's conditions in fields such as physical, physcological, and paranormal potential. Once the Dharma Initiative has accepted the volunteer, the participant has their memory rolled back to the moments just prior to their answeing to the add and they are programed with a memory of the fictitious flight. They are then 'placed' at the site of the 'crash' where they are introduced to an environment specifically designed and catered to coincide with the personality traits of each participant. Having processed the information gathered in the testing phase of the volunteers, the Dharma Initiative can create a mathmatical blueprint of an environment in which each of their participants can have a 'second chance' to become the person they failed to become in their first life. Jack can become the leader he should have been, Locke can stand up for himself, Shannon can become useful, Charlie can follow faith and not weakness, Claire can live a life beyond her daddy issues, so on and so on. If they get second chances...
what does Dharma get?
