Thanks notlsot! Anyone know if the exclamation point in the header of BS1 has always been there? This morning is the first time I noticed it. We all know what an exclamation point is, but just for giggles from Wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%21):

Exclamation marks are used to emphasize a warning.

On warning signs, an exclamation mark is often used to draw attention to a warning of danger, hazards and the unexpected. These signs are common in hazardous environments or on potentially dangerous equipment.

Also, I'm beginning to think more and more that Kate is a rabbit on the outside (or was, before that farmer caught her). Tiberius once posted a while back a clue that read "Beware the Warren of the Snares." This is a Watership Down reference; the heroes come across a warren of rabbits that are lazy and fat and happy. Food is brought to them, and they never have to struggle for survival. The only dark thing that happens is that every once in a while, a rabbit will, well, disappear. They are being bred by a farmer who feeds and cares for them, and kills them.

Could this be a parellel with Ray Mullen, the farmer that takes in Kate? I am suspicious of Kate for a number of reasons. I think her behavior on the island belies that she knows more about where they are and what is going on than she is telling anyone (and why? If she's a rabbit, she doesn't know whether or not any of the survivors are with Hanso). She goes on every trek into the jungle, and her behavior in the flashbacks is curious. She sacrifices everyone around her. I don't think she's evil; I think she's singularly focused on her rabbit mission. And I think more and more that she was sent to perhaps keep an eye on (or eventually kill) Ray (he of the missing arm--a Hanso clue? Think Dr. Candle...), but he got to her first, and put her on that Hanso plane to the island.

I've got a terrible cold. Maybe I'm not thinking clearly, but it seems that if there is some sort of Anti-Hanso action going on in the outslde world, it would be plausible that someone on that plane could have been a member. And it may be Kate. Or maybe Ana Lucia. I haven't made up my mind as to which of them it is. Maybe after we get some Ana flashbacks it might be clearer.

No, it definitely was not there on Tuesday, or before that. I have not had a chance to look since then, but was checking pretty regularly Friday through Tues., and the header was not an exclamation point. It was "bigspaceship1" then.

Hee Hee,

Hey until this rabbit hole provides us with another interesting screen to stare at - how's this for a quest: While I was making a video tonight, working with the soundtrack on it - during Sawyer and Kate's scene when she reads the letter outloud - I can hear what I believe is humming just like in the hatch when Jack got close and his key took a liking to the wall. Can someone else check if I've truley gone nuts or coconuts.?

mrclucks.com just updated. Picture of a chicken whose head comes off for a split second.

There is a page of links that you can go to (through the red paragraph symbol in the lower right corner).

One of the links is to globespotter.com (http://www.globespotter.com/). On this page is this information in invisible script:

16

TORONTO – PB-Sales (TSX: PBS.T) announced today that it has agreed to acquire the assets of the former Oceanic Airlines, in a transaction valued at approximately $750 million.

Oceanic Airlines based in Los Angeles , CA , was founded in 1980 and ceased operations in January 2005. Oceanic experienced financial difficulties after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks along with most other commercial airlines, and reduced their fleet in 2002 from 23 to 8 aircraft in an attempt to maintain profitability.

Oceanic lost several class action lawsuits in relation to a terrorist attack on Flight 343 from Athens to Dulles in 1996, as well as an incident involving nerve gas in 2000 on Flight 762, from Sydney to Los Angeles. Although Oceanic implemented security measures to reduce the risk of terrorist attacks, the class action suit for the loss of Flight 815 in September 2004 for over $4B USD plunged Oceanic into Chapter 13 bankruptcy from which it could not recover.

Oceanic Flight 815 went missing under mysterious circumstances on a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles . No trace was ever found of Flight 815 despite intensive search and rescue operations, and the investigation concluded that the Boeing 777 aircraft with over 300 passengers broke apart on impact with the Pacific and sank without a trace.

Oceanic Airlines ceased operations on January 24th 2005 . President and founder Michael Orteig expressed regret that Oceanic had to cease operations after 25 years.

The offer to purchase the remaining assets of Oceanic Airlines by PB-Sales is considered to be a risky proposition in an industry that has faced huge financial and safety issues over the past 4 years, however PB-Sales is optimistic that Oceanic can be a viable operation focusing on the lucrative South-Pacific routes.

FAA review and approval is required prior to Oceanic being able to start flying, however PB-Sales is confident that the approval will be forthcoming and that Oceanic Airlines may be flying again as early as December 2005.

“We are excited about Oceanic Airlines and its prospects and are eager to provide a superior experience in terms of comfort and safety under the well respected Oceanic name.” said Vincent Madison, Director of Corporate Communications for PB-Sales. “The company has a long history of service in the South Pacific and attractive growth opportunities.”

The acquisition is subject to customary conditions, including receipt of required regulatory approvals, and is expected to close before the end of year or in early 2006.

PB-Sales is a diversified company with annual consolidated revenues of approximately $17 billion and consolidated assets of approximately $14 billion. PB-Sales is one of Canada ’s largest companies with global operations in transportation, service, manufacturing and technology industries. Its operating companies include Merrick Biotech., Yoyodyne Propulsion Systems., Geocomtex and Daystrom Data Concepts. PB-Sales shares trade on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the stock symbol PBS.T.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wish I had enough time to introduce myself further, but I feel endangered even as I type this message. It was in late November, 1982, when I was removed from the Dharma group after a secondary incident which involved both my brother Gerald and his wife Karen.

Since that time I've had 23 years of forced normalcy, until that fateful evening in 2004 when hearing news reports of the disappearance of a flight from Sydney, Austalia enRoute to Los Angeles. Under other circumstances I wouldn't have thought otherwise, but it was an Oceanic flight, and those numbers. Those damned numbers.

I knew it would be a matter of time before another incident would take place, and soon my past would eventually catch up with me. During my time at Dharma I had been given a series of 8mm training films, all but gone except for one which I had returned. It's this film I've transferred to digital format. Perhaps this can serve beneficial to those who may need it. I don't plan on being here very long anyway.

http://rapidshare.de/files/6550202/H...16-81.wmv.html

Unfortunately, I got this from lost-forum, and not here. Anyone know where on The Fuselage this was originally posted? What I find interesting about the message is this line: "Under other circumstances I wouldn't have thought otherwise, but it was an Oceanic flight, and those numbers." Why was it important that it was an Oceanic flight, unless Oceanic is part of the plot?

The message above about pb-sales buying Oceanic has now led to this site: oceanicworldair.com (http://www.oceanicworldair.com/). In the source code is this message:

Simplist: you are always so nice--thanks! Honestly, I think the Classification film is a real film. Passenger 23, were you talking about this exchange with Javi? (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=23566&highlight=beware) :

Javi:

beware!

ja
vi

This exchange took place on the same day (and perhaps earlier?) that the message from Sam DeGroot appeared. So, what to make of Javi's cryptic message? I think the film is a real product by the creators of the show. The "beware of fake hanso films" part makes me think that it is Hanso propaganda. DeGroot describes it in the message as a training film. If I am correct, and the Rabbits are (partly) made up of Hanso scientists who discovered the truth behind what Hanso was up to, the films would be propaganda. Perhaps to entice scientists to come work on the project? Perhaps to idealistic young people to be subjects of a utopian porject. Whatever. But I think Javi was being clever here, in calling it a "fake" film, because, again, there's wiggle room in that statement.

In terms of which websites are authentic? Who knows. I have my reservations about a number of them, and it is hard to keep track of which sites come from where, but it's fun to look, no?

BuckDharma: or meaybe satellite radio?

Here is wiki's link for Sirius (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sirius). BEcause I'm finding the Egyptian Escathology thread (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?t=25175) so interesting, here are some points that stood out to me:

Historically, many cultures have attached special significance to Sirius. Sirius was worshipped as Sothis in the valley of the Nile long before Rome was founded, and many ancient Egyptian temples were oriented so that light from the star could penetrate to their inner altars. The Egyptians based their calendar on the heliacal rising of Sirius, which occurred just before the annual flooding of the Nile and the Summer solstice. In Greek mythology, Orion's dog became Sirius. The Greeks also associated Sirius with the heat of summer: they called it Σείριος Seirios, often translated "the scorcher." This also explains the phrase "dog days of summer".

In the astrology of the Middle Ages, Sirius was a Behenian fixed star, associated with beryl and juniper. Its kabbalistic symbol Image:Agrippa1531_Canismaior.png was listed by Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa.

Mysteries

There are a few unsolved mysteries regarding Sirius.

* Firstly, apparent orbital irregularities in Sirius B have been observed since 1894, suggesting a third very small companion star, but this has never been definitely confirmed.[1]
* Secondly, ancient observations of Sirius describe it as a red star, when today Sirius A is bluish white. The possibility that stellar evolution of either Sirius A or Sirius B could be responsible for this discrepancy is rejected by astronomers on the grounds that the timescale of thousands of years is too short and that there is no sign of the nebulosity in the system that would be expected had such a change taken place. Alternative explanations are either that the description as red is a poetic metaphor for ill fortune, or that the dramatic scintillations of the star when it was observed rising left the viewer with the impression that it was red.

[edit]

The Dogons

It has been suggested that the Dogon tribe of Mali knew about unseen companion star(s) before they were discovered in the 19th century. This is a source of speculation for UFO enthusiasts and was the subject of the book The Sirius Mystery by Robert Temple. This work has been debunked by astronomer Carl Sagan, among others, as based on confabulation and selective evidence. Careful research reveals there was probably cultural contamination on the part of visiting astronomers who went to the region to observe a transit of Venus.[2]

The god of the sun Apollo was jealous of Orion because of Artemis' love for him, and looked for a way to kill him. Apollo challenged Artemis to hit a speck far out in the ocean, teasing her about her archery skills. Apollo knew, although Artemis didn't, that the speck was really Orion swimming. Artemis killed him with a single arrow. When she realized it was Orion, she was overcome with guilt and placed him up in the heavens as a constellation. His faithful hunting dog, Sirius, would not stop searching hysterically for his master Orion, so Artemis placed him, the Dog Star, at Orion's heels. ~ bottom of the page of http://www.sirius-books.com/siriusness.html

Are we allowed to post pictures? If so, I can copy and post the picture. Otherwise, I'm not very tech savvy and don't know how to upload the picture and post a link. If I can't post the picture, you can save the picture from the site to your computer (I saved it to My Pictures folder), open the picture with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, then click on the icon that opens the picture for editing. That opened the picture in Paint. Under the Image button, you can go into attributes and change it to black and white. That is probably a long and convoluted way to do it, but it only takes a minute.

Its my first post on any forum ever, but here goes...

I thought 'Dogstar' didnt have a space in it and when I searched I found a book with the same name. Its synopsis is:
Juneau, Alaska, 1932. This is where thirteen-year-old Jeff Beacon is
stranded when his parents take him on an Alaskan cruise to help him get
over the death of his beloved dog, Buddy. The problem is that Jeff is a
twenty-first century kid, with a laptop computer and hightop sneakers.
Why has he been transported in time to the Alaskan frontier? And how
can he find his way home? Jeff must answer these questions quickly --
and his only help is the town's Bull Terrier, Patsy Ann. With Patsy Ann
as his guide, Jeff befriends the gruff Captain of the old sailboat
DogStar and an adventurous girl named Rose. Together, they uncover a
dangerous secret. When the Captain, Rose and Jeff hatch a plan to set
things right in Juneau, Jeff must make a surprising choice about going
home -- and, once again, Patsy Ann holds the key. Thought the time travel was interesting. Other reviews mention searching for treasure.

"A DOG IS AN ANIMAL AND AN ANIMAL IS A DOG"

And a beautiful bio-form of some sort. Anyone on the plane German (http://caliban.mpiz-koeln.mpg.de/~stueber/haeckel/kunstformen/natur.html)?

(thanks, Likelylost!)

Likelylost
11-10-2005, 08:58 PM
The author of the book is one Ernst Haeckel

from wikipedia we learn:
He extrapolated a new religion or philosophy called Monism from evolutionary science. In Monism, all economics, politics, and ethics are reduced to "applied biology." His writings and lectures on Monism provided scientific (or quasi-scientific) justifications for racism, nationalism and social darwinism. Monism thus became the de facto religion of Nazi Germany.

I could not find the exact same image that we see in bigspaceship1 in his plates of drawings. Did anyone see it? It is, however, another 8-sided figure.

Todell
11-10-2005, 09:06 PM
Good eye on the eight-sided thing, Likely! Can't figure out what it is...

There's also an asteroid named after him. Just like there's one named for a Hanso.

Todell
11-10-2005, 09:13 PM
He specialized in radiolaria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiolaria).

Radiolarians (also radiolaria) are amoeboid protozoa that produce intricate mineral skeletons, typically with a central capsule dividing the cell into inner and outer portions, called endoplasm and ectoplasm. They are found as plankton throughout the ocean, and their shells are important fossils found from the Cambrian onwards.

Precambrian age, Questors?

He also believed in Lamarckianism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inheritance_of_acquired_traits), or inheritance of acquired traits:
It states that the traits an organism acquires during its lifetime in correspondence to its environment will be transmitted to its offspring. According to this theory giraffes have long necks because shorter giraffes spent their lives stretching their necks to reach their food, foliage, and they passed on this trait to their young, creating over generations the modern giraffe. Today most scientists view this theory of evolution as incorrect. Lamarck believed that species changed of their own free will and if a limb or body part was not used, the body part could completely fall off or disappear if the animal wished it to.

So, if Michael's father learned how to remote view, say, then that trait would be passed down to Michael and Walt, according to this, right?

And the bit about body parts falling off if the animal wished it; free will determining biology. Hmmm.... seems like it could be relevant...

Perhaps the Black Rock miners spread the sickness to the island, although it would seem more likely that someone from the Hanso Foundation did it. Maybe the priests' Holy Heroin is infected and waiting to turn Charlie crazy (and immortal) the first time he cracks?

But this letter is dated 2005 and talking about a disease that's just developed. The sickness on the island is supposed to have been there for decades.

Yes, but the disease has just developed in African mainland or something. Which means maybe the sickness just recently got out into the real world but has been on the "island" for quite some time now.

I looked up the disease that was said in the memo (Menigococcal disease, a.k.a Meningitis) on WebMD. Here is what it said:

Meningococcal meningitis is a form of meningitis caused by a specific bacterium known as Neisseria meningitidis. Meningitis is characterized by inflammation of the membranes (meninges) around the brain or spinal cord. This inflammation can begin suddenly (acute) or develop gradually (subacute). Symptoms may include fever, headache, and a stiff neck, sometimes with aching muscles. Nausea, vomiting and other symptoms may also occur. Skin rashes occur in about half of all individuals with meningococcal meningitis. Treatment with antibiotics and other drugs is usually effective against this infection.

I think the really interesting part is the "inflammation of the membranes around the brain or spinal cord." Perhaps this new strain is a combination of the Meningitis and the life-extension things. Maybe the inflammation produces hallucinations in this case?

By the way: there's been some speculation on the other thread about the Hanso site that the secret page is the work of a hacker because of this line in the page source: <!-- LOL H4x0r3d!!1 --> Could it be that it was written into the source code to look like it was hacked? Meaning, maybe a "rabbit" that has inside information from Hanso hacked into the Hanso site and posted the fax?

Also, the Kim Il-Sung thing on BS1: could it be a reference to propaganda, in addition to arms dealers, iron mines and weapons? Hanso is utilizing propaganda? And Kim Il-Sung was by no means a good leader; he created the whole cult of personality in North Korea, and crippled his nation for his own benefit. But his son Kim Il-Jun has been worse. There are rumors that he uses human experimentation on political prisoners, refugees that tried to escape and their families. Could this be part of a suggestion that Hanso is participating in human experimentation? Or, and this is a stretch, but follow me here, that Alvar Hanso started the foundation, but now there is a new generation in charge of Hanso that has taken things to unimaginable excesses in their experiements?

Just blathering, I guess....

Wow, a lot of good information to absorb. First, I know meningitis can cause some possible island ailments like blindness and visual/auditory hallucintations (although in very acute case). So, that seems like a likely suspect concerning the Others.
The bigspaceship1.com North Korean reference concerns me re. the rabbits. http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200505/kt2005052919193410440.htmIn July 2002, the North’s National Academy of Science claimed that it cloned two rabbits using genetic materials from adult cells but the process was not verified via a peer-viewed journal.

International recognition of the North Korean clone will make it the world’s second exploit with rabbits after a team of French biologists, headed by Jean-Paul Renard, who cloned four rabbits for the first time in history in March 2002.

I fear the fate of our rabbit allies. And that propaganda artwork on bs1 seemed really creepy.

Nay 815:

you mentioned in your post that you needed to read up on Transgenics for the Joop orangutan project. i'm a doc and have done lots of work in transgenics and can give you some info:

Transgenics is the process of transfecting a gene into a living organism (could be a cell, a bacteria, a fish, a mouse, etc). transfecting means inserting. Transgenic animals are created routinely (i've done it dozens of times) to see what type of a change in an animal you might get by giving it a new or different gene, or by "knocking out" an existing gene. For example, say you want to follow a fish's blood flow . You can transfect a gene that causes a fish's white blood cells glow green when under UV light . you take a fertilized fish egg, create the "UV sensitzation" gene and then transfect the gene into the fish egg. If it works, when the fish develops, you can shine a UVlight on the fishtank and watch the path of it's blood flow! this fish will pass this gene on to its offspring, who will also glow and be "transgenic fish".

Not to my knowledge has any transgenic human egg ever been created. It's very, very sketchy stuff to do in humans, much like the stem cell stuff, but similar attempts have been made with adult humans by exposing a human to an altered virus that is has a desired gene. You expose the human to the modified virus, the subject gets a cold, but now has a new gene inserted into some of their cells. One human subject at the University of Pennsylvania died during an study back in 1999, so this type of research is up in the air for now. (September 17, 1999 death of 18-year-old patient Jesse Gelsinger ) http://www.ucsf.edu/daybreak/2000/02/22_genetherapy.html

anyway, this Hanso statement implies that they have developed a gene or knocked-out a gene in Joop that now allows the ape to extend his life. It's not so far fetched, honestly, if you can figure out which gene(s) to put in or take out.

/><br />&nbsp;<br />&nbsp;<br />&nbsp;<input type="button" />

</div>

and there are these hidden numbers:

I thought I’d do a little googling on gas masks. I found this site interesting:

http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-gas-masks.htm

No one inventor can lay claim to the original gas mask design, although many sources give major credit to an African-American soldier working during WWI. Soldiers exposed to airborne poisons would often urinate on a cloth and cover their mouths and noses with it. The ammonia in the urine would chemically neutralize the chlorine gases commonly used on the battlefield during WWI.

Ahh, another reason to “pee on it”

Are our rabbits using these masks to protect against the disease? Do you need something this drastic to avoid it? The masks would lead one to believe that the disease is actually something airborne.

Of course, the Sun is a star...

Cool stuff on gas masks, Likelylost. Yeah, I think the sickness is airborne. The sickness mentioned in that fax on the Hanso site, Meningococcal meningitis (http://www.acha.org/projects_programs/overview.cfm#transmission), is transmitted through the air:

Meningococcal bacteria are transmitted through the air via droplets of respiratory secretions and direct contact with persons infected with the disease. Oral contact with shared items such as cigarettes or drinking glasses or through intimate contact such as kissing could put a person at risk for acquiring the infection. People identified as close contacts of a patient with meningococcal disease should receive antibiotics to prevent the disease.

Meningococcal disease usually peaks in late winter and early spring. The disease can easily be misdiagnosed as something less serious, because symptoms are similar to the flu. The most common symptoms include high fever, headaches, neck stiffness, confusion, nausea, vomiting, lethargy and/or rashes. Anyone with similar symptoms should contact a physician immediately. If not treated, often within hours of the onset of symptoms, the disease can progress rapidly and can lead to shock and death.

I was more interested in the name of the group singing Safety Dance (Royal Jelly Orchestra), than in the song itself. After noticing the bees on the island, this may be a clue.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_jelly

Royal jelly is a type of bee secretion that aids in the development of immature or young bees. It is secreted by the heads of young workers and used (amongst other substances) to feed the young until they develop to the desired rank. If a queen is desired, the hatchling will receive only royal jelly as its food source, in order that she will become sexually mature and have the fully developed ovaries needed to lay more eggs for the hive.

and also this story by Roald Dahl by the same name:

http://www.roalddahlfans.com/shortstories/roya.php

Creepy. And the lyrics:
We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance
Well they're no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to
A place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind
And we can dance

The line "leave your friends behind" reminded me of Sawyer and Michael's conversation last week. Didn't they accuse each other of this?

Also, some have said that a midnight star in astronomy is a planet that is visible at local midnight. Also, I've seen that some have called Mars the midnight star (which if true is interesting since Tiberius has been signing himself "The Blacksmith of Mars" lately).

I found this on Midnight Star (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zwezda_Dnieca).

In Slavic mythology, the Zorya (alternately: Zarya, Zvezda, Zwezda) are the three (sometimes two) guardian goddesses, known as the Auroras. They guard and watch over the doomsday hound that threatens to eat the constellation Ursa Minor, the 'little bear.' If the chain breaks loose and the constellation is devoured, the universe is said to end. The Auroras represent the Morning Star, Evening Star, and Midnight Star, respectively, although the Midnight Star is sometimes omitted.

The Midnight Star is Zorya Polunochnaya (also Zwezda Polnoca). Some legends omit this Zorya, leaving only the Morning and Evening Auroras. Each night, the sun dies in the Midnight Zorya's arms and is then restored to life. She is a goddess of death, rebirth, magic, mysticism, and wisdom.

"Midnight Star" could be a clue that on the surface of the "dark side" of the moon could be a hint that a satellite that be seen from the far side of the moon and could not be seen from Earth (AKA: L2 Earth-Moon). Since the moon only has one side facing the Earth, the far side oft the moon had never been seen by man (at least until 1967, with the Luna 4 probe and Apollo 8). Wouldn't it be nice if an elevator went from the moon to this space station? Then you could grow some awesome crops on the moon (if you figure 15-16 days of sun, the harvest would be nice if the meteorology were controlled. Every 23 days the space station would have to be "adjusted" to stay in orbit (since Legrange points one, two, and three are unstable and all) . With a society like that, it wouldn't be hard to keep suppiles going up to the midnight star, thus working your way to the answer to life, the universe, and everything (42).

It is animated, L. So I looked up Swiss Cheese, and all I could find that was interesting was the following:

Swiss cheese is the generic name, in the United States and Canada, for several related varieties of cheese, all of which resemble the Swiss Emmentaler. It has a distinctive appearance, as a block of the cheese is riddled with holes known as eyes.

Three types of bacteria are used in the production of Emmentaler cheese: Streptococcus thermophilis, Lactobacillus, and Propionibacter shermani. In a late stage of cheese production, P. shermani consumes the lactic acid excreted by the other bacteria, and releases carbon dioxide gas, which slowly forms the bubbles that make up the eyes. Swiss cheese without eyes is known as "blind".

Eyes and bacteria. Maybe it means something? I don't know...

Static electricity or electrostatics is a field of science and a class of phenomena involving the imbalanced charge present on an object, typically referring to charge with voltage of sufficient magnitude to produce visible attraction, repulsion, and sparks.

White noise (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_noise)?

Static Spacetime (http://www.answers.com/static%20spacetime)?

In general relativity, a spacetime is said to be static if it admits a global, nowhere zero, timelike hypersurface orthogonal Killing vector field. Every static spacetime is stationary. In a static spacetime, the metric components may be chosen so that they are all independent of the time coordinate. It is in this sense that a static spacetime derives its name, as the geometry of the spacetime does not change. An example of a static spacetime is the (exterior) Schwarzschild solution.
(Any physics folks out there who can explain this to me in a dumbed down way?)

Static the Twillight Zone episode (http://www.answers.com/topic/static-the-twilight-zone?method=6) about time travel?

Static the superhero (http://www.answers.com/topic/static-superhero?method=6)?

Static is a teenage African-American superhero with electromagnetic powers. Virgil Hawkins was 15 years old when he became Static. He gained his powers at a huge showdown between the gangs of the city, where he hoped to get revenge on a gangbanger who had been bullying him. During that "Big Bang" the authorities released a tear gas marked with a harmless radioactive marker so that any gangbangers would not escape arrest, not knowing that it had been further spiked with an experimental mutagen called Quantum Juice (Q-Juice). Virgil was exposed, and when the agency behind the experiment tried to capture him, he fought back, discovering that he had gained the ability him to generate, manipulate, and control electromagnetism. Virgil named himself "Static" and became a superhero.

Or, just "static"

Todell someone emailed me a rabbit joke and I thought you'd enjoy it.

A man opened a refridgerator and found a rabbit inside. He asked the rabbit what he was doing in there? The rabbit said, "This is a Westinghouse, isn't it?" The man replied, "Yes it is" The rabbit then said, "We'll I'm westing"

Todell - the image on the mouse/rat is the same we had earlier that linked to the Haekel drawings. But I was never able to find that particular drawing. It was similar to many, but not exactly the same as any one. It was "Haekel-like" but not exactly Haekel.

I like the static idea. The cheese does have that quality. Static can obstruct sounds, either intentionally or not. Interestingly we have no sounds being broadcast to be obstructed. Or else they are being so well obstructed we can't hear them at all. Maybe they are in Vincent's range of hearing.:)

I googled "Extra Sensory Perception" and found this link:
http://www.conelrad.com/media/atomicmusic/sh_boom.php?platter=23
It's an album by Sheldon Allman titled "Folk Songs for the 21st Century" and includes the song "Extra Sensory Perception."
Todell found this web page in connection with an earlier Bigspaceship1 page as shown in his post of 10/11/05 concerning "Schizophrenic Baby":

So they are playing some song about "two for the price of one" and "split-personality" but I can't find the lyrics to save my life. The Morse code reads: "YOU ARE THE MAGNET AND I AM STEEL"
At least they gave the bears some music to dance to.
Can anyone see if the number code has changed?
Interesting thoughts, cmcd...I'm not sure how comfortable I am getting behind the idea that ultimately egenics were being implemented in our best interest, but it certainly would be a twist to have the Foundation that we all suspect of evil intentions be the good guys.
I am beginning to wonder more and more about whether or not the Intitiative has been shut down, as I theorized earlier. Maybe they needed to bring back the outside "projects" back to the island to complete the project, and the "rabbits" are trying to undermine their efforts.

ETA: someone at TWoP got a screencap of the bears when they come together at the dot, and it looks like a bunny (http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/1089/lostmno28nr.jpg). At least to my obsessed eyes.
And the song may be "Schizophrenic Baby" and might be traced back to this fella (http://www.conelrad.com/media/atomicmusic/sh_boom.php?platter=23). I love it.

Rich&Single: I don't know. And the bottom line is, there'll never be a way to prove one way or another, and isn't that kinda the point? I agree BS1 has linked to some questionable things that ABC could never officially approve of, but as long as no one can concretely connect ABC to them, how can anyone blame ABC. Furthermore, I don't think the folks who go to BS1.com will be so offended by Jesus of the Week that they would make trouble for ABC over it.

Also, I know that before BS1 showed up, there was a lot of whining on other forums that Lost hadn't done something like this. They were upset at the fact that the Hanso Foundation site linked to ABC, and that it took the viewer out of the reality of it. So, you see, they're screwed one way or another. Link to ABC and confirm that you are real, and you're going to upset the hardcore Internet fans. Don't link to ABC, and you'll have folks questioning your legitimacy.

Catch 22.

But, all I can offer is that bigspaceship.com is a design company that did some web work for LOST as you can see here. Are they related? I don't know, but it's the most legitimate clue yet. I've seen some good fan sites: Mrclucks.com, oceanicworldairlines.com (at least IMO), and http://www.kraftkost.com/pages/1/index.htm, but BS1 perplexes me. The graphics, the obscureness, the design and cleverness of it, the way it doesn't offer much (if any) information, it doesn't try to explicitly solve any of the mysteries...smells real to me.

Anyway; those of you who read the Tiberius thread, I was posting this (http://www.thefuselage.com/Threaded/showthread.php?p=613599#post613599) over there this afternoon and something jumped out at me. Tib posted this clue a while back:

CVIII

This small opera
A tempest in a teapot
Beneath a Tempest Shield
A cage fit for Faraday
The very high voices gather outside
Yet none of the CVIII penetrate.
Over and over
A problem of frequencies
Fix her or she will drift
Drift CVIII ways

Warn her

Tiberius

I was researching ESP, and I found this:

Extra-sensory perception and technology

In the early days of radio and electronics, the technology seemed magical to most people, including the engineers working on it. It was suggested that it might be used to unleash previously impossible feats of mental ability. This included communication with dead people, who were considered to have moved on to another world or "plane". Alec Reeves, one of the pioneers of digital communications, considered ESP a perfectly reasonable proposition. He believed that many of his inventions were prompted by the dead pioneer Michael Faraday, and spent much of his earlier years trying to perfect spiritualist telecommunication devices. Some of his experiments are available as ActiveX pages on his website.

So I went back to Faraday and his cage that was mentioned in the clue and I found this:

In his work on static electricity, Faraday demonstrated that the charge only resided on the exterior of a charged conductor, and exterior charge had no influence on anything enclosed within a conductor. This is because the exterior charges redistribute such that the interior fields due to them cancel. This shielding effect is used in what is now known as a Faraday cage.

More static? Interesting...especially in light of that ESP song that was playing before this staticy image. Also, when you go to theislandiswaiting.com there's a lot of static in Walt's message--HEY maybe that's why Walt speaks backwards? When he tries to communicate normally the static blocks his "signal" as it were? The only way for the message to come through clearly is to be reversed?

I don't know. But I think the static is related to ESP somehow...

Love the Jordan catch!

Here are the lyrics (http://www.mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=62606) to the song: I'll Sail Upon a Dog-Star:

I'LL SAIL UPON THE DOG-STAR
(D'Urfey?)

I'll sail upon the Dog Star,
And then pursue the morning,
I'll chase the moon 'till it be noon,
But I'll make her leave her horning.

I'll climb the frosty mountain,
And there I'll coin the weather;
I'll tear the rainbow from the sky,
And tie both ends together.

The stars pluck from their orbs, too,
And crowd them in my budget!
And whether I'm a roaring boy,
Let all the nations judge it.

Alright, this is all a little wacky, but it ties into a lot of the images and songs that have been on BS1.com lately.

Lemuria! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemuria_%28continent%29)

Lemuria is the name of a hypothetical "Lost Land" variously located in the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its 19th century origins lie in attempts to account for discontinuities in biogeography. Lemuria has been rendered superfluous by modern understanding of plate tectonics.

Though Lemuria has passed out of the realm of science, it has been adopted by Occult writers, as well as some Tamil people of India. Accounts of Lemuria differ according to the requirements of their contexts. However, all share a common belief that the continent existed in ancient times but sank beneath the ocean as a result of geological change, often cataclysmic.

Right, so it's this lost continent, ala Atlantis. But there are a number of interesting other connections, as BS1 has been presenting them. In 1864 a geologist proposed the idea of a lost continent to explain the existence of lemurs. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lemuria_%28continent%29#Scientific_Origins)

As Lemuria gained some acceptance within the scientific community, it began to appear in the works of other scholars. Ernst Haeckel, a German Darwinian taxonomist, proposed Lemuria as an explanation for the absence of "missing link" fossil records. Locating the origins of the human species on this lost continent, he claimed the fossil record could not be found because it had sunk beneath the sea. Hey! It's Haeckel again!

So according to the occultists, Lemurians became these mystical creatures, sometimes they're reptilians, sometimes they're space aliens...whatever. They have advanced knowledge and are often clairvoyent.

According to this guy, some of the Lemurians came from Sirius and some came from the "Red Planet":

The Lemurians were like thought projections - not physically solid. It made them higher in frequency and closer to the Creator's energy vibration level. Their souls came to Earth to experience the physical vibration. They were large in stature, about nine feet tall. Their skin had an aqua cast changing from blue to green in conjunction with two seasonal cycles each year. Their faces were elongated, and oval. Their eyes were large with lids running vertically. The texture of their skin was slightly scaly. They breathed through their skin, not lungs. The temperature of the planet, the atmosphere, the light and the orbits of the other planets were much different then. The first Lemurians were androgynous - neither male nor female.

It began with the projection of 144 soul groups - representing the projection of 33 million souls. Some of the souls came from the 'Red Planet'. Some of the souls came from the stars - Pleiades and Sirius - and projected into physical form on Earth.

Now, how this relates to Lost? But "I'll Sail Upon a Dog-Star" starts making a kind of sense...

Also, this is one of Tiberius' first clues:

Moses and the Popul Vul

Man has forgotten when the Lost Journey began
As the Wheel of Time turned it moved upon the waters
From the far north of prehistoric cold
Past the Gates of Hercules and young Plato
Year after year consuming the Lost upon the sea

Mystery of the Lost Village
To the Samoans it was Bolutu
To the Madris it was Hawaiki
As Lost Lemuria goes sailing by
Protected by monsters of land and sea.
Pense a moi et le silence de la mer.

Todell,

just obsessed with your Lemuria stuff.. found this..

Lemurians had pliable, jelly-like bodies and slowly developed physical forms. [Movement from higher to lower frequency - above the physical into solid matter].

The first Lemurian sub races allegedly were apelike, egg-laying hermaphrodites who communicated by mental telepathy through a third eye.

Hot Child In The City
Nick Gilder

Danger in the shape of somethin' wild
Stranger dressed in black, she's a hungry child
No one knows who she is or what her name is
I don't know where she came from or what her game is

(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
(Hot child in the city)

So young to be loose and on her own
Young boys, they all want to take her home
She goes downtown, the boys all stop and stare
When she goes downtown, she walks like she just don't care, care

(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
Yeah
(Hot child in the city)

Come on down to my place, baby
We'll talk about love
Come on down to my place, woman
We'll make love!

Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
She's kinda dangerous
(Hot child in the city)
Young child
(Runnin' wild and lookin' pretty)
Young child, runnin' wild
(Hot child in the city)
Hot child in the city
(Hot child in the city)
(Hot child in the city)

MJ: And finally, how important is the internet to the show and where do you see the show going? Not in terms of storyline, but in terms of internet, audience and theme progression?

DL: We're actually starting to finally do what we wanted to do from the very beginning. I think that now that the show has caught on, especially in the Easter egg construct of it. We have a couple of websites that we run, like Oceanic815 and HansoFoundation. We're also starting a couple more that we're not going to announce and ones that people will hopefully find. That whole idea that you can go on the 'net and continue your interactive experience and find nuggets of information about the island that are not presented on the show or that the show will later payoff, I think is going to be really really cool.

MJ: So basically just keep going with the interactive aspect?

The Dharma Initiative was created in 1970, and it is the brainchild of Gerald and Karen DeGroot -- two doctoral candidates at the University of Michigan. Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as B.F. Skinner [there is a jump cut/splice here] imagined a large scale communal research compound where scientists and free thinkers from around the globe could pursue research in meteorology, psychology, parapsychology, zoology, electromagnetism, and utopian social [splice] Danish industrialist and munitions magnate Alvar Hanso whose financial backing made their dream of a multi-purpose social science research facility a reality.

Has anyone saved all the pictures, links and codes since this site was discovered?

it looks like lxicon has them linked in his signature. He posted two pages ago.

Couple of things:
I'm sure y'all have seen this: http://www.kingcrossstatepolice.com/. There are a number of things you can enter in the user name field, and I think the password is key.

And, I was thinking about the fax document from the GHO that is found on the Hanso site. The document is entitled khr.html, but there's nothing on the document that corresponds to khr. So what does it mean? I posed that question over at TWoP, and sdPalladio came up with this site (http://www.wisdomsdoor.com/at/aethyr_khr.shtml):

Upon entering the 20th Aethyr, KHR, you will encounter some kind of object that looks like a spinning wheel. This wheel is apt to be large, so it will get your attention rather quickly. The word KHR itself means "wheel." The wheel is meant to covey to you the knowledge that life, existence, and the universe is circular in nature not linear. There is no beginning and no end, just an endless turning of perspective.

Everyone who enters KHR will probably see this wheel slightly differently. But, with practice you will be able to see the wheel's two major themes:

* Your evolution and learning in the universe is the journey from the outer part of the wheel toward the center.
* The physical universe is not as it appears and it has no beginning or end.

You may also in time see the physical universe here as a flat disc, with yourself separate from the disc. This too is another truth that you must learn: that you are independent of the very universe you are so intimately connected with. There are other lessons here to learn, so when you find yourself here, just gaze at the wheel and in a few moments the wheel will fall away and the lesson will begin. This Aethyr is a lot of fun once you let go of the fact that what you perceive is not always as it seems.

which, for those of you familiar with some of Tiberius' earlier clues, seems relevant. Here a just a few of his "wheel" clues for those who are interested.

For eons the Wheel has been in motion.

Myths, legends, and prophesy.

The Time

The Place

The Choice

Tiberius

Intervention as a Race

The Wheel of Time turns
Each Dawn marks the Count
Conflict among Nations
Nations are at War
War drives the Necessity
Necessity drives the Inventions
Inventions refine the Singularity
Choice before the Singularity
That will break the Cycle
Poor is the Choice
That Man Remembers
As his skin begins
To Burn

Tiberius

Empires Rise and Fall

But a Choice must be made at each spoke of the Wheel
A King of Black, a King of White
Woundwart or the Law of Fives
The Oldest War Continues
Aaron the First Priest if the Choice is correct.
The Rudder for the hopeful continuation.
All have a quest, their mission in Life
Protect or Heal Or Punish or Preach.
But what if you failed
and your Faith is LOST.

The humble witness

Tiberius

Just trying to piece it altogether: perhaps whatever it is that Hanso is working on is an attempt to further humans evolution (long life, resistence to illness, ???) and they see the outbreak of the illness as a cost of this greater good? Or perhaps what the GHO thinks is happening in the Zanzibar station is not what it seems?

I don't know. I thought I'd throw it in here, though, because I wasn't sure where else to deal with it...

Also? It just occured to me that the last line from that wheel website: "This Aethyr is a lot of fun once you let go of the fact that what you perceive is not always as it seems," eerily echoes what is on the oceanicairlines.com website in the invisble text.

I agree: it's very New Age-y. But I think it's based more on Eastern religious principles, rather than Christian ideas, despite the use of "Angelic Governors." It seems to be some sort of guide to spiritual evolution. With the Dharma project, and their use of the I-Ching, etc., it struck me as interesting, if not particularly relevant. However, you never know. And the entire notion of things not being what they seem, that reality is an illusion is both a guiding principle in Buddhism, and, it would seem, on the island.

it may pan out, but it could just be an unrelated page that uses KHR. i AM curious as to what the KHR on the hanso site means. the other page names all are short forms for the projects.

Couple of things:
I'm sure y'all have seen this: http://www.kingcrossstatepolice.com/. There are a number of things you can enter in the user name field, and I think the password is key.

can't seem to get past the access page. But when you hit 'forgot password' you get sent to this page...
http://www.kingcrossstatepolice.com/index_error.html

i decided to give that tel# a ring (free long distance at the office sure comes in handy), and its some guy yelling
' goodwin, goodwin killed the chicken!'
kinda funny:undecide:
but I can't say I went as far as leaving a message after the beep.
Anyone have any luck logging into that site??

If you go to that error page, there's a spot where you can click to get something: c:\a_cortez\flyers\active.doc.....
Also, it seems the password that I gave you earlier doesn't work anymore...Hmmm....

Also: lxicon, I didn't mean to suggest that the site with KHR information was related to Lost, just that the idea of the universal "wheel" and that things are not what they seem is (maybe) relevant. I guess we'll have to wait and see...

The second title of the restricted king cross state police site is "Culpam Poena Premit Comes"

It's a quote by Horace (Punishment follows close on crime).

I'm too tired now for searching after more details. Good luck and good night (after midnight here)!

Maybe tiberius once mentioned it?

The most interesting thing here isn't even the carrot-munching rabbit in the cage, but the number on it's back. Not a six, not a four, not five-point-nineteen. It's an eight. This is what we're looking at, and we all see it. I didn't tell you. You didn't ask me. I never opened my mouth and you never opened yours. We're not even in the same year together, let alone in the same room...except we are together. We're close. We're having a meeting of the mind. GET KNIVES!

Blah blah blah

Alright. So more theory from me.

I am pleased to see that the rabbit thing is at least as interesting to someone else as it is to me. If this is a fan site, then bravo! If it's real, then I'm onto something, but what?

The rabbits equal test subjects. I think these are the barefoot/hoodied others that come into the camps to abduct the survivors. Goodwin said they were taking the "good" ones. I've speculated that the survivors are rabbits, but perhaps not all of them. Perhaps the Others are taking the survivors who are rabbits? Or perhaps all the survivors are rabbits, and the Others are only taking the rabbits who are successful projects in some sense?

And what does it mean they see an eight? Is the eight a chosen one? Are the Others looking for a particular rabbit? And what will happen when they find him/her?

I've been noticing that besides the children that have been taken by the others, that there are a number of child issues for the survivors. It's just a hunch, and it's crazy, but could Hanso have been actively working to take away all the children of the survivors at any cost? Could they have set up Ana-Lucia's shooting, to deliberately miscarry her child? Could they have paid Thomas off so he would leave Claire, forcing her to give her child up for adoption? Could they be behind Susan's demands that Michael give up parental rights to Walt? Is that why Danielle went on a potentially dangerous scientific expedition while laregly pregnant--because her unborn child had been threatened at home, and she felt being on a boat in the middle of the Pacific was the only safe place to be?

I think one of the children is prophecized to be a messiah. Somehow the eight (which is also the symbol for infinity) has something to do with this.

And! Perhaps this needs it's own post, but I think there's something going on with time/space. I'll have to post this later. I'm feeling muddled.

Thoughts anyone?

car88win: that's awesome!

johnny: I agree--someone really took care with this site. And I find it very similar to BS1 in the way that the clues are weird and vague. I find some of the other sites out there so straightforward, and I suppose it's the masochist in me that prefers to believe the creators would be more obtuse on their sites...

Anyway: is it cool to start talking about the items found there? Has everyone had a chance to investigate and play on their own? 'Cause I'm ready to discuss! here's a list, that johnnyd80 compiled over at TWoP, that I've updated:

The second 8 takes you to a graphic of an algebraic equation.

The 7 in 17 takes you to a graphic of a skull and crossbones.

The semicolon after #913 takes you to a sound file of a throbbing sound, electromagnetic?

108 now takes you to a graphic of runes. The image you get on marvincandle.com when you click on 108 (the second time) is one of runes: here are the translations through this handy website (http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Runes/Runehome.htm)

Nauthiz or Need (http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Runes/Nauthiz.htm)

Ansuz or Communication (http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Runes/Ansuz.htm)

Raido or Journey (http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Runes/Raido.htm)

Uruz or Strength (http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Runes/Uruz.htm)

Isa or Ice (http://www.mystic-mouse.co.uk/Runes/Isa.htm)

Cen-c or Torch (http://www.fortunecity.com/greenfield/deercreek/248/divination/alphabet_a2d.html)

Someone else saw the word Narvik spelled out via the runes, and I think that's an interesting interpretation, but I don't really see it. Of course, my interpretation doesn't make much sense, soooo...

The comma after 5D takes you to oceanicflight815.com

The comma after 9A takes you to a sound file of -.. .. . which spells die. (The Redeemer on TWoP found this)

The second space after 6R takes you to a map of Norway? Flipped upside down?

The comma after 2A takes you to ABC's Lost site.

The 3 in 73 takes you to a graphic of a rope chain? They almost look like rosary beads...

The comma after 74 takes you to cryonet.org

The # in #110 leads to a chart. Is it a morse code chart that corresponds to the runes?

The second 1 in #110 leads to another skull and crossbones, slightly altered.

The second 1 in #114 leads to http://www.fly-oceanic.com/seatingchart.htm
(http://www.fly-oceanic.com/seatingchart.htm)
The semicolon after #115 takes you to this site:

Objectives of the Ørsted Mission (http://web.dmi.dk/fsweb/projects/oersted/mission/objectives.html)

The semicolon after #116 leads you to http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictionary.com/cryopreservation

The 3 in #32 leads you to the ABC site again. So does the semicolon after #77.

The # in #104 takes you to a graphic. Is it a stuffed animal? Desmond's bunny perhaps?

The # in #103 takes you to Swedish Space Corporation
(http://www.esrange.com/default.asp?groupid=2004518134827211)
The x in x72 takes you to The Life-Extension Manual (http://www.futurescience.com/contents.html)

The comma after 131 takes you to the Hanso "Joop" letter. (http://www.thehansofoundation.org/lep.html)

The 3 in 39 takes you to The Life-Extension Society (http://keithlynch.net/les/)

The comma after 16 takes you to a graphic of Australia and the South Pacific.

The comma after 4E takes you to answer.com's entry on the Stanford prison experiment (http://www.answers.com/topic/stanford-prison-experiment).

The comma after 61 takes you to yet another blurry graphic, The Redeemer on TWoP deciphered it as "Don't Think of a ____ Fear"

The 6 in 6F takes you to an SOS sound file.

The comma after 74 takes you back to the Alcor cryonics site. (http://www.alcor.org/sciencefaq.htm)

The comma after 73 takes you to a upside-down graphic of an inventor. (Where have I seen that before? Recently?)

The f takes you to the bio of Nobel Prize winner Hannes Alfvén (http://nobelprize.org/physics/laureates/1970/alfven-bio.html).

The comma after the 9 takes you to the word Brandon.

The 1 takes you to the European Lottery site, The National Lottery (http://www.lotto.ie/)

The comma after the second 12 takes you to another SOS sound file, altered. Is this SOS?

Also, the line: miyya iteration thamanya iteration egry iteration besoraa iteration ma'assalama at the bottom of the page? Miyya means One hundred in Arabic, Thamanya is a location in Burma, a Buddhist temple in Burma(?) Anyone? egry -- can't figure this one out, besorra means faster in Arabic and ma'assalama means good luck. I think. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

SO. Thoughts?

I believe the # in #110 is a Chromosomal display, split in half with different runes listed above it, there is an example of how chromosomes can be displayed here. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosome) In the marvincandle.com image there are 46 separate images (23 pairs of chromosomes) I also think that it may be the object in the 3 of 73 as well.

Of course I could be totally off on that.

...she offers to show him Gilgamesh, the only man worthy of Enkidu's friendship.

Gilgamesh meanwhile has two dreams; in the first a meteorite falls to earth which is so great that Gilgamesh can neither lift it nor turn it. The people gather and celebrate around the meteorite, and Gilgamesh embraces it as he would a wife, but his mother, the goddess Rimat-Ninsun, forces him to compete with the meteorite. In the second, Gilgamesh dreams that an axe appears at his door, so great that he can neither lift it nor turn it. The people gather and celebrate around the axe, and Gilgamesh embraces it as he would a wife, but his mother, again, forces him to compete with the axe. Gilgamesh asks his mother what these dreams might mean; she tells him a man of great force and strength will come into Uruk. Gilgamesh will embrace this man as he would a wife, and this man will help Gilgamesh perform great deeds.

It spells "NARVIK" because each represents a letter of the alphabet.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narvik a town in Norway, 200km inside the Arctic Circle

Narvik is one of the most northerly towns in the world
was strategically valuable in WWII
iron ore had to be transported through there in the winter

Alright: for those of you who read the Tiberius thread, this may be old news, but cmcd's post above made me remember that in gene therapy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gene_therapy), viruses are used as vectors to manipulate the genes:

With gene therapy, scientists splice cells with the patient's body with corrected genes, and then place them on viruses as vectors/carriers that they then put back into the patient's body. The viruses carry the "fixed" gene back to the cells. They replace the sick gene with the good gene.

The ex vivo approach was the first to be put in to practice. In 1990 trials were run designed to treat children with an inherited immune deficiency, as well as children or adults with high serum cholesterol. Cells were removed from the patients body and incubated with vectors that inserted copies of the genes. Most gene-therapy vectors are viruses, although there are techniques for delivering DNA directly as well. After modification, the cells are transplanted back in to the patient where they will hopefully replicate and produce functional descendants for the life of the transplanted individual.

This technique is best used for diseases where the desired cells can be extracted easily, such as the blood or liver.

When familiar viruses are detected in the bloodstream the body sends antibodies to bind to and consume them. In retroviral and other recombination-based approaches, a second problem arises in the unpredictability of where the new DNA inserts into the chromosomes of transfected cells. If the gene is inserted in a bad place — for example within the sequence of an important gene, or within non-coding (intron) regions that the cell will never translate to produce protein — then the new gene would not be properly expressed and the cell could be made worse or even cancerous.

Viruses attack their hosts to insert their genetic material into the genetic material of the host. This genetic material contains instructions to produce these viruses. The host cell will carry out these instructions and produce the viruses. This is how viruses spread, in general.

In addition to the instructions producing the components of the virus itself, viruses can carry additional genes containing instructions for creating other kinds of proteins. In theory, if we insert a gene that is missing from a patient in a virus, and infect that patient with the virus, the virus will spread the missing gene in all the cells of the patient. The missing gene is now replaced and the disease is cured. This technique is called gene therapy.

Three types of viruses are currently used as vectors in gene therapy: retroviruses, adenoviruses and adeno-associated viruses. They differ in their mechanisms of action and results.

The genetic material in retroviruses is in the form of RNA molecules, while the genetic material of their hosts is in the form of DNA. When a retrovirus infects a host cell, it will introduce its RNA together with some enzymes into the cell. This RNA molecule from the retrovirus must produce a DNA copy from its RNA molecule before it can be considered part of the genetic material of the host cell. The process of producing a DNA copy from an RNA molecule is termed reverse transcription. It is carried out by one of the enzymes carried in the virus, called reverse transcriptase. After this DNA copy is produced and is free in the nucleus of the host cell, it must be incorporated into the genome of the host cell. That is, it must be inserted into the large DNA molecules in the cell, or the chromosomes of the cell. This process is done by another enzyme carried in the virus called integrase.

Now that the genetic material of the virus is incorporated and has become part of the genetic material of the host cell, we can say that the host cell is now modified to contain a new gene. When this host cell divides later, its descendants will all contain the new genes.

One of the problems of gene therapy using retroviruses is that the integrase enzyme can insert the genetic material of the virus in any arbitrary position in the genome of the host. If genetic material happens to be inserted in the middle of one of the original genes of the host cell, this gene will be disrupted. If the gene happens to be one regulating cell division, uncontrolled cell division (i.e., cancer) can occur.

Gene therapy trials to treat severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) were halted or restricted when leukemia was reported in several of the patients.

The Hanso Foundation's site with the fax about the outbreak of Meningococcal meningitis? Viruses are the most common cause of meningitis. Could Dharma have been doing experiments with gene therapy using a meningitis virus as a vector, and it escaped? Causing the sickeness?

The classical symptoms of meningitis are headache, neck stiffness and photophobia (the trio are called "meningism"). Fever and chills are often present, along with myalgia. An altered state of consciousness or other neurological deficits may be present depending on the severity of the disease. In meningococcal meningitis or septicaemia, a petechial rash may appear. A lumbar puncture to obtain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is usually indicated to determine the cause and direct appropriate treatment.

Convulsions are a known complication of meningitis and are treated with appropriate anti-seizure drugs such as phenytoin.

There's so much here: cancer as a result of gene therapy gone wrong, the fact that if gene therapy is successful, it is passed onto successive generations...

Could it be that the survivors/rabbits are the subjects of gene therapy, through their parents? They would inherit the manipulation of the gene, and pass it on to their descendents...and so on and so on...

And so this would tie in with your spec that someone is trying to prevent it from passing down further, thus they are capturing our Losties and their progeny? Because something has gone wrong with replication?

There's a few symptoms in your post that might apply to people on the Island...

Bacterial meningitis

http://www.astdhpphe.org/infect/Bacmeningitis.html
How common is bacterial meningitis?

In the United States, bacterial meningitis is relatively rare and usually occurs in isolated cases. Clusters of more than a few cases are uncommon.

In parts of Africa, widespread epidemics of meningococcal meningitis occur regularly. In 1996, the biggest wave of meningococcal meningitis outbreaks ever recorded hit West Africa. An estimated 250,000 cases and 25,000 deaths in Niger, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, and other countries paralyzed medical care systems and exhausted vaccine supplies.

(So we have Nigeria and 8 years before the plane crash.)

That would still play into the "they're taking them because they're related" theory. It could work. I had so much fun digging that stuff up the other day. Love bringing more fuel to a discussion! Need to kind of organize the thoughts though don't you think Todell?

Simplist, it was only after reading the Stanford experiment link that I called Todell and asked "is this for real?" I mean it was beyond my comprehension. But I think the point of it is to show that there were crazy experiments that did happen and that could justify the Dharma/Hanson initiatives.

So creepy. I mean it was an experiment, how could they let it get so out of hand?

Well, I emailed him with the question above: "What did one bunny do to the other bunny?" and in the text I answered it: "trap him in the warren and demand that he push a button every 108 minutes?"

I received the auto-reply: Just don't think of a white bear.
LARs naVAho

And then about two hours later he sent me a message on stealthmessage.com that read:

Let's just say that your thought somewhat resembles certain principles of the Skinner box.

Regards,
Lars Navaho

So I sent him a new message:

Dr. Skinner certainly did have interesting ideas about utopian communities. I suppose if you could condition (and control) a large enough group of individuals' behavior, a utopian society would be possible. But you would have to condition them first. A Skinner Box would come in handy.

I have a question for you: did the project go wrong, or is everything going exactly according to the plan?

Respectfully,

And then immediately, he responded through stealthmessage:

Let's just say it took us all by surprise. We made a number of alterations to the original plan.

Oh, there's the signal again. Gotta run!!!!

Interesting, no?

The skies roared with thunder and the earth heaved, then came darkness and a stillness like death. Death flooded from the skies. That’s a condensed passage from the Epic of Gilgamesh.
His seed shall inherit the earth. Fret not thyself because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. For yet a little while, and the wicked shall not be: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it shall not be. The meek shall inherit the earth. Their inheritance shall be for ever. A variation of Psalm 37
What about the friends little children had lost? I have no idea where this is from. Anyone have any ideas?
It was a dark and story night… This phrase is a running joke amongst writers. There’s even a very entertaining writing contest named after this old chestnut.

There are some non PG-13 entries at this link,
http://www.bulwer-lytton.com/
If you want some entertaining reading click on the 2005 Winner link.

But basically, any writer worth his salt would not begin any passage with “It was a dark and story night…” unless he intended as a joke. Charles Schultz even had his character Snoopy use this phrase when he was an aspiring writer.

Don't get me wrong, I like the marvincandle site. The Stanford prison experiment was a nice touch. It's fun working through the site's links.

"Time is crucial. The kiss of death is imminent. The key to successful life extension can be found in the young ones."
then it goes into, what i presume to be, norwegian, which reads:
"Der er intet uden dØd. UdØdelighed er ikke kun for én selv. UdØdelighed er også for ens nære. End egen dØd er det mest irellevante af alt. Vi har en vis kontrol over levetiden. Vi kan selv ændre odds for at få et længere liv. Let et evigt liv.

End own dead is it mainly irrelevant af (by, from, off?) all. We have a show control above lifetime. antwerp on TWoP notes that catoms, as in the name of the link on BS1.com, are programmable electromagnets (also called claytronics) - like little robots - that stick to each other and move in three-dimensions.

Programmable matter (http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05136/505033.stm)...

Each of the individual robots comprising these people or shapes would be a "claytronic atom," or catom. Likely spherical in shape, a catom would have no moving parts. Rather, it would be covered with electromagnets to attach itself to other catoms; it would move by using the electromagnets to roll itself over other catoms.

The catoms' surfaces would have light-emitting diodes to allow them to change color and photo cells to sense light, allowing the collective robot to see. Each would contain a fairly powerful, Pentium-class computer.

For now, the researchers are trying to build a two-dimensional version, with each catom being a cylindrical device a little more than an inch in diameter with its side encircled by 24 electromagnets.

In Goldstein's lab, researcher Brian Kirby can make two of these catoms twitch against each other. Within a few months, he hopes one catom will roll all the way around the other catom.

fascinating...

I know this was a line in the bi-polar polar bear song, but it also resembles this:

47"Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was let down into the lake and caught all kinds of fish. 48When it was full, the fishermen pulled it up on the shore. Then they sat down and collected the good fish in baskets, but threw the bad away. 49This is how it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come and separate the wicked from the righteous 50and throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth."
