View Full Version : 2nd door to hatch??
snowmen and polarbears 10-09-2005, 10:51 PM i haven't seen anyone ask about this, and maybe it's just not worth the time, but where does the second door from the hatch open up? why hasn't anyone seen it yet? Jack managed to get out of and back in through the door with relatively little effort in episode 203. Anyone else wonder about this?
Baileysdad 10-09-2005, 10:54 PM In the episode preview I saw today...it showed someone opening a door in the side of one of the hills and someone was behind it....I think it's either our second door or an entrance to another bunker....time will tell.
The door Jack and Kate popped in and out of seemed close enough to the beach for kate to run there and get help.

By the way...welcome to the madness...you will never be normal again.:)
Xerxes 10-09-2005, 11:41 PM And of course. If it has two doors. Why does only one seem to say quarantine, and the other merely squeak annoyingly? But onto teh subject at hand. Why can Jack just come and go, where the other door is a huge foot thick steel bunker door. Wierd.
Amber 10-10-2005, 09:40 AM I think it leads to somewhere close to the caves.. that is my guess! :)
sheba 10-10-2005, 09:55 AM It is about 1/2 a mile from the caves, but we don't know in which direction.
As far as Jack going in and out with ease ... it's a door. Doors are designed for people to go in and out them with ease. Though the inside door had begun to "stick sometimes", there appearred to be no problem with the outer door.
Also, we have only seen the inner door fairly well. Perhaps the inside of the outer door says "Quarantine". If not, then good catch Xerxes!
liz_lost_fan 10-10-2005, 10:15 AM if it is a hatch door, I think its to a different hatch. we know theres six on the island...so...yea
Drake 10-10-2005, 02:15 PM That door seemed like it was pressurized to when it opened. I though I heard it making a pop then hiss sound when Kate opened it.

Hi Sheba, how do you know about the 1/2 mile distance? As for the question about the ease of the door, I think the weirdness is more: why is this entrance so easy to get in and out of, while the hatch was so well hidden and protected?
Also, I do think it was pressurized - sort of like the lock system they use in space. You go through one door and close it, then open the second door.

I don't think the hatch was intentionally well-hidden and protected-- it just had over 20 years of jungle growth over it.
My guess is that the door would have been similarly covered with overgrowth-- though clearly it's been used since the bunker was built, we just don't know how often. But it would also have to be well obscured, or else the Lostaways would have found it before now.

Jack begins his little "we're all going to watch the sunrise together" speech with "Locke found a hatch about half a mile from here ..."
Also, I agree that the double door implies a pressure chamber or de-contamination chamber is between them.
snowmen and polarbears 10-10-2005, 04:56 PM i would have to agree with jennylee: there is no way for us to know just how far out the 2nd door leads. and how do we know that there are six on the island? we have all questioned the dharma initiative and the 3 of 6 on the film and the explanations on the dharma site, but that says nothing about how many hatches there are, that's all just speculation. i guess, i just asked this question because the creators of the show just seemed to slip by that fairly large detail with the hopes that no one would ask questions about it. and as for sheba's oh so clever reply, you're right: doors are designed to open with ease, whereas hatches are designed to be sealed shut, burried, and opened only with the aid of extrememly volitile explosives. and forget those hatches that wont open with the force of a trebuchet, those just wont do. especially on this island.

I'm sure the hatch would have opened relatively easily as well ... had the attempt to open it been made from the inside.
jennylee27 10-10-2005, 09:40 PM True, Sheba, true.
If the second door was covered by 20 years of jungle growth, can you imagine how long it should have taken Kate to get through all of that? :eek2: It didn't seem like too long to me!
Drake 10-10-2005, 10:51 PM I just think it was way to convenient that they didn't show us the exit on that side.
It probably opens up to a Starbucks. :)

And if the hatch door says quarantine and Desmond believes it, then why does he know how to open the second door? (the one that the wheel sticks) Obviously he leaves the bunker
Islandgurl 10-11-2005, 05:45 PM The whole thing about the hatch doors is driving me crazy!:dizzy:
And...
Where is the door that Ana Lucia is heading to in the preview? It can't be Desmonds hatch!
or could it be?

Umm.. isn't the word quarantine on the outside of the until recently buried hatch? I don't have a screen cap to check that but it seems like there is no way Desi would know that from his position inside and as it's has been pointed out, he didn't hesitate to open the door himself or tell Kate where it was. And for that matter just what did he think was going to happen now that the button hadn't been pushed? It's just funny that he ran out of the only shelter he had known there to frolic in the jungle with a few cans of food and some viles of mysterious meds.

The word Quarantine was on the inside of the hatch door.
