so JungleFever and I have been discussing this -> We can see clearly the section in which Dr. Candle warns that the computer should "not be used for anything...". but has anyone picked up on the second edit? just after candle walks over to the model of the computer room in the hatch, he says: "You will have four minutes to enter the code into the micro computer processor." Immediately following that sentence there is an incomplete sentence (a poorly edited section) that ends with his saying: "...introduction into the program." What could be missing here, and why? there's sketchy editing going on here, and my guess is that it was done before Desmond got a hold of it, even though all Desmond would have needed was a pair of scissors. thoughts?

I noticed that too. The other thing I always wonder about the video is, why is it hidden behind all the books?

And if Sayid watches the film and hears that will he decide to do a hack into the computer to find out more? And if they do use the computer for something other than the code is that the way off the island?

Could the "introduction to the program" equal introduction to being a 108 minute slave to the code?

I take back there being 2. I think there's at least 3 now. Towards the beginning of the history section, the phrase "Following in the footsteps of visionaries such as bf skinner, ....imagine a large scale communal..."

He says visionarieS. Plural, yet lists one, then there is a break in the film.

Ok I have to admit I am spending way to much energy on this and probably will be the victem of an intervention soon. Rehab is definately in my future. Anyway .. two more splices. As he is listing the fields of study his last one is "Utopian Social / splice / Danish industrialist and municians magnet Alvor Hanso". Was there another field of study "they" cut out? The other splice is when he suggests "you and your partner take alternating shifts, in this way you will stay as fresh and alert / splice / as most important that when the alarm sounds.." The subjects of the spliced sentances are similar enough not to provoke to much curiosity but the syntax is all wrong. Lastly, just a note on the "do not attemp to use the computer / splice / for anything... congratulations" , that's a pretty darn big section of splicing mess. The others are only about a frame and a half worth of tape together. This one looks more like 3 or 4. Maybe it was spliced and repaired a few times?

And why is it so necessary to explain so much to the people who are in the hatch in the first place?

The film looks as if it were an orientation for new employees, not for people who have been with the project long enough to be trusted if they were stationed on an island of mystery and entrusted to save the world.

I was thinking the exact same thing, CaptainKidd.

In a TV guide issue It is said that the film was "cut" and spliced for a reason and that the missing pieces will be a plot point in this season http://www.livejournal.com/community/lost_daily/109566.html Warning Other Spoilers inside if you click on the link! Don't shoot the messenger.:hypocrit:

The thing I'm loving most about that link is the avatar someone made of Sawyer and Sayid! That's beautiful man! Too funny!

why would there be an orientation video in the hatch to begin with? im thinking that dharma knew that the hatch dwellers would recruit people from outside (meaning those who had no previous knowledge of the experiment.study). If they planned to recruit from the inside, then there would be no purpose for the orientation video being in the hatch.

I think that Desmond ran away not only because he was scared, but because he had found replacements. He wouldnt have ran away if he didnt know where he was going, but he was playing dumb and scared so the lostaways would do exactly what he wanted them to do. Press the button.

That would make sense. After being stuck underground and forced to punch buttons every 108 minutes for who knows how long, I'm sure he was frothing to have someone else take his job over. I sympathize, that's pretty much my job in a nutshell and I'm dying to run away!

I sent you a PM if you need help finding it let me know. Glad your here! Well, I know she's working again so I'll say if those missing sections give us more "detail" about life in the hatch/island wonder if the other stations are located on the island that they have a film too. One that wouldn't be snagged. But this would give us a great Desmond flashback ep.

From Spoilerfic (general season 2 spoilers):
10/11 - The "Orientation" film's jarring jump cuts are actually what [Damon] Lindelof calls "missing pieces" that resulted when former hatch hermit Desmond spliced the broken movie back together after watching it too many times. Those missing pieces will become "very important plot points down the road."

Edit to add spoiler fonts. Sorry, I thought it was in the spoiler section, my mistake.

That should be spoilerfonted......

Not that I'm not a spoilerjunkie and I would not have looked anyways...

That would explain why it was hidden, he was hiding it from himself!

I heard the same thing the spoiler above said... that it was spliced together because Desmond watched it so many times, he had to splice it back together .

I was reading a spoiler on why it looks edited and here is why....

Desmond kept watching it over and over again until it broke... he tried to put it back together again but that part got cut out. DL said that the part that was cut out "Don't use the computer for anything" *cut* was very important.

i find this interesting because until now i had never thought there might be some secret way to get off the island other than good old fashioned rescue.

I think he was telling them not to use the computer to communicate with the outside world. What if he said that to entice them, part of the original plan? And with Desmond having just simply washed up on shore, what is the first thing you would do if you saw a computer? What if all the hatchlings were unplanned, in need of rescue, and were told specifically not to try and call for help?

It's like putting out a plate of cookies and telling everyone not to eat one. You would want that cookie so bad! Maybe the incident occured when someone tried to use the computer to call for help?

All this cheese is starting to go to my head!

Carolyn53115: Maybe that's how Lenny heard the numbers and drove him mad?
Someone used the computer to communicate with the world outside and that lead to that someone got his IP , 4815162342, and became mad by it. :)

how much do you think the whole dharma/hanso connection has to do with the survivors, do you think the splices might explain there crash, or an of the other stuff. i had heard locke and eko found interesting things in the orientation film, do you think they find the missing sections
