Sometimes it is hard to comment, because we have different styles, different things we see important. It is also interesting what goes through to the reader and what doesn't. I think it may be the fact that I am not a writer, not even in a joke.
In Dark Times I didn't just write Desmond falling for yet another girl. I wanted to tell the story of him getting confidence back by being needed somewhere by someone. Maybe a title would have helped, but I couldn't find one that would imply that and sound good too. So I guess it is lost now.

I can't make up my mind about Kelvin. I started by disliking him even more, but now he seems to be showing a different side to his character. Interesting. :rolleyes:

Kelvin seems like a very multifaceted character and that's how I'm writing him. I don't think he's really a bad guy; he just got mixed up in some bad things. (That's how I play him in the RPG I'm in on LJ too.)

Just finished chapter 5 of New Ships. :18: I had a rough time with it, but it's done.

About Charlie - I think he will be very thankful towards Desmond in the long run, but right now he's still wary of him. It's easier for Charlie to express thanks to Sayid who he is familiar with and trusts. Plus in the moment in question Charlie was wrapped up in looking after Claire.

I'm being sympathetic towards Charlie here because I can understand him having trust issues. Look at his relationships with Liam and Locke. They were two people who Charlie trusted, admired, felt close to and even hero-worshipped and he ended up being really screwed over by them. I think Desmond will be a figure who interests Charlie. The sort of person he'd really like to be friends with, but the feelings of jealousy, inadequecy and vulnerability that (I suspect) Desmond will bring out in Charlie will make their relationship very strained. Yes, it is typical Charlie, but it is understable considering how he has been treated in the past (particularly by his many big brother figures).

Neither do I. I just think the breakdown in trust between Charlie and Locke (on both sides of the relationship) has contributed a lot to Charlies insecurities. But I feel for Locke too, especially after learning how Eddie screwed him over. Charlie and Locke are actually both as bad as each other. Charlie gets screwed over by an older brother and then seeks more older brother figures on the island. Locke gets screwed over by a young man who he took under his wing and then takes more younger men under is wing on the island. Charlie and Locke really bonded in the early days, but they have real trust issues now, which cut deep because of these past grievances.

I wouldn't give up on Charlie yet. People can learn from their mistakes and grow. Remember that just at the point when Charlie was becoming a stronger more mature character, he was kidnapped and hung from a tree. I think the trauma of that sent him on a downward spiral that will take him much longer to recover from. I think Desmond could be a good influence.

Desmond ruffing Charlie up might actually improve their relationship. Eko was very aggressive with Charlie in '23rd Pslam', but in the end it made Charlie very respectful and devoted towards Eko. Don't know if thats a healthy thing though...

I agree about Desmond/Sayid too. They are both intelligent, misunderstood loners who have lots in common. They could really open up to each other.

Have you tried signing in at Yahoo and then clicking on the link in Jane's siggy? You should have no problem viewing her blog then. (or click on the link and then sign in. You should still be on the same page after the log in screen comes up. I've done it both ways and it works. PM me if you're still having problems and I'll see if I can walk you through it better)

How did you like the connection between Kelvin and Jack? (I got the idea for that part after watching "Lockdown" again and wondering what the heck Jack was doing in Phuket)

It was right after FI aired, and STH was complaining that she doesn't know how to fit it in her story, and you said that he is not psychic in yours. I registered the idea, that your Desmond has no special abilities. :shrug: My long term memory works fine, the short term is defected :p

I registered the idea, that your Desmond has no special abilities. :shrug: My long term memory works fine, the short term is defected :pThen I will have to find it and edit it because it was always my intent to have him have these abilities. I'm kind of surprised you feel that way. I thought I was making him more human and likeable. He did some pretty horrible things but he feels remorse for them and is trying to change. You'll find out more in the next chapter.

Poe was OK. Really, I'm not setting this story up to be horror genre. They are in a horrible, scary situation on the Island, but that's not quite the same thing! Hope you aren't getting any nightmares from this!

The pill and "The Event" are connected. As I continue with the story, you'll get more FBs about why Mel is who she is and thinks how she thinks. Recall that many of our fanfics have a character who stands in for us, to some degree. I'm a dark but sensitive/caring sort--so is Mel. (Jane's Jade is a lot more accessible and likeable; I know that. It's just Jane can write more accessibly than STH can. I'm glad you still like my story, though!)

Mel will have her redemption, in time--should I live long enough to tell of it. But her story is set in real-LOST storyline, so can only be told as LOST itself spins its tale.

I have to admit that the suicide hints bother me, too. Mel is getting too dark for me. It just kind of takes away from the fun of the story. I'm not saying you should change her, no writer should change a character for anyone but themselves. I'm just saying that even the worst things that happen on the show - like the beatings - don't leave me with something hanging over me like Mel's thoughts of suicide. I'm sure you have a good explanation, STH, and I'm looking forward to reading it. And I agree, too, with LL, I love your style of writing!

I really do try to balance Mel's depression and "suicide pact" with herself with a caring and compassion for other people (which you've seen with Sawyer, Desmond, and Charlie so far). These are intertwined in her psyche, too--so don't give up hope!

Xgirl - I have a nasty feeling about what they're doing to Locke. I don't trust them. The Kelvin background is brilliant, this is a great back-story for him. I'm really enjoying it.
