I'll be writing the next chapter of Island Meadows in the next few days. It'll be the last chapter for eight months, of course, seeing as I stay inside the TV version's storyline. The cliffhanger should make you wanna come back in February, I think! ;)

Whether I'll try my hand at other fanfic over the LONNNNNNNNG hiatus, I haven't decided yet. If I can come up with a story that takes place within the 93 days on the Island (within the storyline boundaries), or a good pre-crash story, maybe. We shall see.

Glad you liked it. I actually got the idea for one of his visions from something I saw on an episode of Millennium. (I got the idea for some of what he was writing from that episode too.)

NotAllThoseWhoWander: Very good! You had me going in the beginning when I thought you really had Desmond dead! Thank goodness I was wrong. :biggrin: It was nice to get "inside" Des' head over that horrible experience. Write some more!

Cap'n: As always very good. But I did have trouble believing that Desmond could fit through that porthole and get Charlie out of it, too. It's way too small. But if it was possible, I know that's just what Desmond would have done! Chap. 2?

xgirl: I don't know if I can handle all this flogging and stuff. Personally it bothers me that people subject themselves to that for a God they claim is all about love. It hurts me to know anyone does that to themselves. But I really liked the flashes he had and that he had them as a child. Looking forward to more.

STH; Well, I have to be honest. I'm really disappointed that Mel took the pill. I really see it as taking the easy way out and while I can't short someone for not being strong, at this point it seems rather out of character as she has bonded with so many of the Losties and really shown that she cares for and about them. I just can't see her doing it. I see her realizing that she's scared but that she's also strong enough to stick around long enough to try and help her friends. Especially with her knowing that Aaron cried because of Charlie. I would have liked to have seen her draw on her fear to give her strength to cope. And if that pill's not lost it's potency, she's going to be dead because it does take about 60 seconds and there is no antidote. :frown: Maybe Des switched the pills and she only feels sleepy because she thinks she took the real thing. I hope so!

Mel knew Charlie was dead from Aaron's crying. But it all APPEARS that his death is bringing rescue. Though she feels something is "off," she also knows that (1) she tends to get a little paranoid about things; and (2) even if something's wrong, she ain't no foot soldier, and probably could do little to help. Remember, she was scared of the Others coming and taking her, and vowed they wouldn't. She'd have the same attitude toward anyone else coming will ill intent toward them.

I'd like to have Mel want to live and try to help, too. But the last time she tried to help, she ended up beaten and raped. Though that was a good 12 years ago, she's NEVER forgotten it. She still wants to help--if she can be in the background, or "invisible." But in the forefront of things? What she did when Sayid/Jin/Sun returned was an exception, not the rule, with her. When the combined events of confidante Desmond turning his attentions to the doomed Charlie, seeing James & Kate were a couple (like Buddy & Darlene were a couple!), and Jack was back after all that time as prisoner of the Others--and bringing JULIET with him, Mel panicked. And retreated back to her "invisible" self. Her actions in Chapter 11, then, were those one would expect her to take. Unfortunately.

That said, this IS Lost! So things are rarely as they appear to be! I said in the postscript that I'd be back in February with Chapter 12. This is Mel's story. It's hard to write Mel's story if Mel's not there! Just sayin'. ;)

And Desmond has those narrow slinky hips. But I guess I was stretching it by suggesting that they could BOTH get through together. Ah well, this AU.

The moment when Desmond tells Hurley, Sayid, Jin, etc about his death is crushing. Charlie really was like everyones little brother in the camp. He annoyed them sometimes, but they loved him.

I agree that flogging is an extreme way of showing penitance. It seemed right for the place Desmond was in at the time of the story. (There won't be any more scenes like that in the rest of the story.) My feeling was that he felt that physical penance was necessary to atone for what he did to Ruth. (I also think that along with his inner turmoil he was seeking answers in his faith and that could have led to some temporary zealotry.)

A lot of readers say I write Sawyer well and Sawyer is a character that I feel is often badly-written for in fanfics, because Sawyer lovers will make out that he is a better guy than he really is. I'm pretty much indifferent to Sawyer, neither a fan or a hater, so I think I just write him realistically. I enjoy writing for Sawyer cos he has snappy dialogue, but not enough to write for him as a major character. I find his angst/issues really boring.

STH: I finally got your story read. Sorry it took so long.
I liked it except for Mel's opinion of Locke and Ben. (They're two of my favorites, along with Desmond, of course so I may be a little biased). I'm also wondering why Mel took the pill when she promised Desmond she wouldn't. (How can you leave us hanging about her fate until the spring? It's bad enough the show will keep us in suspense that long.)

Loved the new chapters, x-girl! Athena's view of The Purge gives a truly tragic new perspective to that event. Was Athena the only child spared? If The Purge took place in the 1990s (or even the late 1980s), I think Karl would've been a small child at that time, for instance. I hope you address this in future chapters!

Mel took the pill despite not telling Desmond because she felt there wasn't any option. Either the Others would find them and take them later on (since they weren't at beach camp), or people would rescue them all and take them back to the outside world. Mel had come to the conclusion that there wasn't anything for her to go back to, nor did being back in "civilization" appeal to her. And staying on the Island--even if she were allowed to--didn't really attract her, either. She'd be bereft of any of the people she felt "safe" with. And those who'd still be on the Island? Locke, whom she loathes. The Others, who she is terrified of. Danielle the crazy Frenchwoman. And her own survival skills were limited. Mel just felt she'd reached the end of the line.

Plus, Aaron's crying, she correctly connected with Charlie's death. Desmond was with Charlie, so she thought the worst about him, too. If Desmond WAS dead, she couldn't tell him before taking the pill. So THAT proviso was rationalized away. (When someone is ready to do something, they have a way of rationalizing away any reason that would keep them from doing that. Just human nature.)

Sorry that didn't come across in the fanfic. I really tried to get it across without doing an overkill.

Also sorry that you have to wait till February to find out what happens next. Nothing I can do about that. I am basing my story around the actual show's events--and there are no events to write around till the show comes back in February! :shrug:

Maybe I'll try another fanfic between now and then. No promises, though.

I'm writing the parts about the purge as if they took place in 1987 (according to Lostpedia that's when the purge happened.). I don't think Karl would have been born yet. (If he's 16 like Alex).

At a Charlie thread, Cappy wrote of the longer version of the last chapter he'd planned, but changed his mind for brevity's sake. In it, the returned-from-time-travelling Desmond wakes up in the basement, and slowly gets his memory of the NEW events that happened due to Charlie NOT dying. Really good for everyone all-around. But the part I liked the best was that Charlie, Claire, and Aaron moved in next door to Liam & his family in Sydney!

And, of course, Des & Penny get married! :biggrin:

Seriously, I don't know. Jane's two Desmond fics are 50 chapters apiece. I don't know if you could get thru all of Lea's story, either, in 2 hours. Neither mine nor x-girl's are completed yet, and I don't know if you want to take on a fanfic that isn't complete.

You might want to go to the Charlie art/fiction board in the Charlie forum. Lots of Charlie stories in the wake of Charlie's death. Many of them are complete, and none of them are THAT long. And many of them are Chesmond, so you'd get plenty of Des!

Wow! Thanks for the very nice review. I wanted to see Charlie as the winner too and I didn't get that from the show either. In the show I really felt like Charlie was a victim, that he was being cosmically bullied into dying and emotionally blackmailed with the promise of Claire and Aarons rescue. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth.

I think you're right here Lea. Kind of like the Harry Potter books have gotten darker with each additional book. But even though they have gotten darker on the whole, there have been light happy moments in each one, so we can hope for some light Des moments from time to time. :biggrin:

Thanks Lea. I'm glad it all makes sense. I was gonna post it all in the theories section, then I thought...Nah. I think I'm reading it this way mostly because it gives Charlies death and Desmonds flashes a huge connection to the mythology, which I want them to have, but I seriously doubt the writers have done it this way.

I did notice! I love both your short Chessy fics. But I guess I could with pre-Charlie death fic. There are a lot of the post-Charlie deaths fics around lately and there really is some great writing in them (especially when they focus on Desmonds reaction) but they are really depressing too. I just love Desmond/Charlie interacting so much!

OK, I know I've been MIA for ages since my back went out but I went back to work on the 6th and so far so good. LOL Anyway, though I haven't been posting, I have been writing and am half done with chp 18. So tonight I will type, type and type to try and get as many of those chapters up as I can. I know I promised STH that I'd do this weeks ago but just wasn't up to it. But I will tonight. I'm ready to get this going.

The story has reached a point that will be a big change and reveal. That will be in chpt 18 which I will try my darnedest to get up this week.

While of course there is the time issue, it is not the main problem. If I found something to say about it - something worthy - then I'd continue. I don't like stories without a purpose... even when I wrote the long one - New Ships, I knew that eventually I want to reunite Alex with Danielle, with the help of my main characters. It just took me a bit long to get there heehee. :biggrin:

It was quite long ago, so... I read through the whole thing again... One of the best fics I ever read! Everybody so true to themselves... Charlie, Hurley, Jack, Claire, Desmond... Maybe Claire was a little too understanding... but I would expect that much considering the circumstances.

Well, thats what I tried to imply by the ending. It would have been OTT to have Penny showing up, but I wanted to leave it on a hopeful note.

It's funny. In S1 Locke was actually one of my top favourite characters. I loved him when he was a quirky mystic mentor figure. But in S3 they have turned him into a guy who will kill, betray, manipulate and blow stuff up in the name of the island and destiny. I want to like Locke again but the way that they have written him in S3 has turned me against him. In 'Further Instructions' I thought we were gonna see the return of the heroic savior Locke, but then he just worked to his own selfish agenda.

This really is solvable. Just have Eve ask Richard to tell her about Jacob and his fate again, so she can get her mind around it. Then, he can tell the story that'll fill in the gaps in these chapters. The main thing to me is: how did Captain Hanso get into this trapped-inside-ash-circle mess? What happened to him that he had to meet this fate? And what happened to Jacob inside that hut, so that he "freed" Hanso and took his place? Richard's recounting of Hanso's story will cover all of that.

Sorry about the car. I remember how irritating it was to have the thing in the shop. Of course, I now do mass transit or walking for everything. Lots of hassles there, too--mostly cuz this society is built for cars (unlike, say, Europe). But I never have to worry about a huge bill from the mechanic! :biggrin:

Thanks jane. Cappy is actually lobbying for my portal theory because she believes in it that strongly. It would be the ultimate twist for Charlie to be resurrected in that way at some point. I'm not getting my hopes up though because of the amount of times TPTB have disappointed me with their lame story ideas. Still, it would be cool I agree.

I thought about having Locke appear and maybe try and stop them from using the portal but TBH after he knifed Naomi I'm just so disgusted with him I just wanted him out of my sight. So as Hurley would say, "Locke's off in the jungle killing stuff, who knows where he is." ;)

And I don't know how many people picked up on this (because there was no way to come out and say it in Desmond's POV), but that second portal Ben took them to WAS the magic box. It was the same room Cooper appeared in. It fits with my portal theory that Cooper was also brought to the island that way since, like Juliet, he just woke up on the island and has no recollection travelling there. Portal, I'm telling you.

Charlie usually gets the brunt of it but lately I've been feeling particularly sadistic towards Desmond. :devil2: It's all so you can cuddle them afterwards and make them feel better see? This was for a challenge and it had to be a dark fic. The next challenge I'm taking on is for a horror story for Halloween and you guessed it, I'm doing Desmond again, Edgar Allen Poe style. I can't wait! *is evil*

Well, let's wait until you read it. LOL I'm rusty. I will get up the 19th chp of Rock of Ages but then I think I'm just going to let it run aground like the Black Rock. It just got too bogged down with too many loose ends. I should have stopped when it was a short story. Maybe I'll pick it up again at when either little Ben meet Richard or when the Losties crash but don't know if or when.

I think it was just that I'd just finished 2 50 chapter stories and then Rock of Ages began short and I expanded on it and just was not fully up to it so the story just wandered off track more than it should have.

I'm about 3/4 done on the new fic but ... LOL ... I don't have a title yet! :eek2:

Hope you're right. I'd still like to know how Jacob could "replace" Captain Hanso, and why Hanso was in this position (and what that "position" was). It isn't the malady of never aging, cuz Richard had that, too, but he wasn't imprisoned in a cabin with an ash circle around it. So there's something more to what "ailed" Hanso.

Hope you'll dwell on this in coming months, Jane. Even if you only write a one-shot that explains it all.

But thanks for clearing up how and why Eve turned to Richard, and worked with him to bring her brother down. :hug:

Hope you're right. I'd still like to know how Jacob could "replace" Captain Hanso, and why Hanso was in this position (and what that "position" was). It isn't the malady of never aging, cuz Richard had that, too, but he wasn't imprisoned in a cabin with an ash circle around it. So there's something more to what "ailed" Hanso.

Hope you'll dwell on this in coming months, Jane. Even if you only write a one-shot that explains it all.

But thanks for clearing up how and why Eve turned to Richard, and worked with him to bring her brother down. :hug:

Stress of Charlie's death leads to the dream of his being alive and Penny's rescue and the last part is the truth of what happened once he did get ashore. Jack and Sayid (and Frank) explain it. I decided to have Frank be one of the Boaties.

It's a twist on a twist.

This was very tense and evocative in the way you wrote it and the imagery you used. You just about killed me with Desmonds dream where Charlie lived and Penny came for him and how happy Desmond was. Sawyers line "Whoa Popeye...you're blinding us with that smile of yours" cut me up because we hardly ever see Desmond smiling with genuine happiness.
