View Full Version : Not quite sure what to think....
chellly 10-11-2005, 04:47 PM So, it's not that I don't like Desmond, because I do. I just am not "in to" him from only a short time of his being on the show. I thought he was a cool character, but I guess there wasn't enough of him for me to get a really good feel. However, I definately think he is going to play a part in the future because of the picture.
Please don't stone me! I just am curious if I am missing something, because I just don't get the Desmond obsession.

Hi Chilly,
At first I was sad to see someone had posted in here but when I read your comments, you're not dissing Desmond but I guess it is safer to ask your question in here than the other threads.
There's really no way to tell you what you don't see. It's like trying to describe color to a blind person or sound to a deaf person. I'm sure you've seen the other posts from people that love Desmond. They explain why. That's all I could do.
But maybe it'll help if I repost here what I posted on his official bulletin board ...
>>When Ian first appeared on camera, when he began talking to Matt (Desmond/Jack), I literally sat up on the couch and said, "Who is THAT?!" Then I just sat there and took in every little thing he did and said. Yes, the accent is beautiful, I love a burr and a brogue but it was more ... much more. I was instantly taken in by Desmond. I was facinated by him. Ian was so easy with the character ... so natural. I knew I was watching an astonishing actor. Talent, for me, is something I find extremely attractive. I'm drawn to talented people and actors the most. He just pulled me in with his HUGE talent and there was no turnng back. LOL I'm not being flippant when I say that Ian's talent puts me in awe. Literally in awe.
Now for why I like Desmond. I say it that way because I could still be awed by Ian's acting and not "like" Desmond. But I feel Desmond has a huge heart and a kind soul. I think he has a spirituality about him that is genuine. He just glows ... even when he's being naughty (aiming a gun at Locke's head ... bad boy! ) I also adore Desmond because he cares. Think about it. Here he was, alone on this island, and Calvin brings him in and explains the computer code to him and he trusts him. Some might view that as naive but I don't. Desmond's not naive or dense. He has an ability, I believe, to read people and he trusted Clavin enough to keep doing the work after he died. Never complained, never gave up. Why? Because he believes that if he stopped, it would be the end of the world. If that's not love of mankind, I don't know what is!
I also love Desmond because even though there is this gentle, kind side to him, he is also a strong man. He defends what's his and stands up for himself. I admire that.
And lastly, when he was able to get away, to finally leave that bunker and be free and he thought he was running for his life, he stopped and took the time to talk to Jack (even after Jack had had a gun aimed at him) to find out about Sarah. After all that time, he remembered that man he met briefly in the stadium that was so troubled and lost (no pun intended). Again, if that's not love of mankind, I don't know what is.
I will be very sad if they don't bring Desmond back. So many people care about him and want to know his story. The writers of LOST don't just write well, they write characters that are so real and genuine that they make us care about them and that's the goal of every writer and actor ... to write a character that people care about and to portray the character so that we care. I care and I want to see more of Desmond!!<<
That's about as best as I can explain it for me. Hope it helps. And I'm willing to bet that if we get to see more of Desmond, you'll see what we all see.

Chellly,
There will be no stoning here...Desmond/Ian wouldn't have it!
I love Jane's heartfelt response.
Here's what I can tell you...
It's the hair!
Really...the accent and the hair.
Well, and the eyes!
And those nekid shoulders were nice, too!
Not much more I can tell you...apparently we all have it in for sweaty, kind of freaked-out dudes in jumpsuits...
It's a thing...not a bad thing, just a thing.
Peace,
Mi
chellly 10-12-2005, 08:03 AM Thanks for the reply JB! I can certainly see where you are coming from, and I'm sure it's just a matter of time for me to warm up to him. :)

I have to admit, he does have nice hair.

Yes, yes he does!
LoL!
ThePenguinJanitor 10-12-2005, 08:49 AM um, yeah, everything Jbdean said! lol
I know he's only been in 3 episodes, but thats enough to really like a character I think...And a lot of the people who really like him, really want to see more of him. Its not full blown-out obsession its just um.. interest! yeah, that made NO sense! *boils tea*

My pleasure, chellly!
And according to the latest TVGuide ... you're going to get that opportunity!!
DON'T READ IF YOU DON'T WANT SPOILERS! More than just Desmon/Ian spoilers at this link:

Yes, I must admit (and put in my original post that I partially quoted to chilllie), He has GORGEOUS hair!!!
elfdream 10-12-2005, 10:13 AM I had actually seen the actor before and liked what I saw of him and his work...so for me it was the actor.
(and I was one of the few who knew who Dom was BEFORE Lord of the Rings..I'm apparently one of the few Americans familar with British actors)
a70eezchild 10-12-2005, 11:35 AM Yes, yes he does!
Now, you all know that I am joking...not that the hair isn't outstanding, because it is.
About Ian...I have been following his talent for quite awhile now.
I'm convinced there is nothing he can't do...nothing he couldn't sell us on.
It has been fascinating to watch, to find out about what he's done, what he's going to do and then watch it happen.
Yes, tremendous, awe-inspiring talent. And a wonderful human being as well...his posts on this forum being just one example.
And...he's a funny guy, yeah?
But...Desmond has been a brief blurb on the landscape that is Lost, so I understand if he hasn't quite won you over.
I wonder if, having another apparently single, strapping man as available for "relationships" isn't part of what gets the board babes going...fresh meat, so to say...LoL!

Nope, that's not it. It's the intrigue, the accent, the mystery, etc. that is Desmond that has swept them off their feet. If it was a new cutie on the show then we'd see some response but OMG the response to Desmond has been earth shaking! When I read posts from Sawyer fans that say Desmond is their NEW favorite character, then I know it's something really, really special that Ian has (and we know that but now the world's gonna see it, too) brought to both the show and the character.
As an example ... this thread is the only post in the "not that into you" board and there is nothing bashing, hating or even unlikable in it from beginning to this point.
Desmond is a fantastically written character portrayed by a phenomenally talented actor. It all adds up to = 108! (just kidding) It all adds up to being much more than just a new cutie on the block.

How true...
I used the word phenomenal when first describing his performance in GoJ.
Love the avi!!!

Well, as I'm watching GoJ I am saying that for his performance as Jesus, too. I have watched more "religious" films throughout my life than I can recall and they usually move me but I have NEVER watched a portrayal of Jesus that moves me as much as Ian's. I can't watch more than about 20 min at a time ... because I'm crying too much! It's the very first time that I've seen anyone portray Jesus that actually made me feel like I was seeing the REAL person!
And thanks for the compliment on my avi! But it's just the subject matter that makes it so great!

a70eezchild 10-16-2005, 12:22 PM I'm going to stone you!
As a newly famous, previous movie Jesus once said to me:
"Love One Another..."
My response: "Oh you Always say that!"...LoL
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone, dude!
I know that I'd rather get stoned with you than be stoned by you...
Peace be with you, bruhtha!

It was the gratuitous shower scene. You know that, right? No, just kidding.

What would we DO without that scene???
Gratuitous...and necessary!

I thought that was what it was!! :o How disappointing it would be if the theory is true that the shower scene wasn't Desmond.

Hi Chelly,
don't worry, no stoning here! Jane did a great job of replying to you, but I would like to add some comments. I had seen Henry Ian Cusick in the Gospel of John where he played Jesus. When I first saw him, I sat up straight and said, "I think that's Jesus!", as I thought he gave a great performance (better than Jim Cavaziel's in Passion, just my opinion) and it really stuck with me, although I haven't seen a whole lot of his work. The character of Desmond just really struck a chord with me, I guess because I would be totally insane if I had to spend that much time alone without my family, friends, and pets, doing a repetitive job, with no hope for the future. I empathized with the character, and want to see him be happy again. I think Henry Ian Cusick has a lot of charisma, and he sure is good looking, but there are a lot of actors like that. There is just something about him that connects with people. I predict big things for him in the future. He has responded on the VIP board to several posts, and he appears to be a very nice person. Well, I don't know if that helps to explain the "Desmond Obsession" that seems to have grabbed so many people, but I am hoping that soon, Chelly, we will count you among us!

Have to comment on this great post!
For me the reason I think Ian did such an outstanding job as Jesus is because, for the first time that I'd seen (and I've seen a lot of films with Jesus in them), I saw a Jesus that was real, genuine, laughing and smiling. All the time we see him only with the weight of the world on his shoulders. But he had to have been happy, had to have smiled. He was filled with love and love makes you happy and makes you smile. I could connect to Ian's portrayl and that was by far the best part of it for me.
And I think Ian does that with Desmond as well. He could have played him as a total nut case and yet he brought out the human aspect of this man that had been a virtual slave to something that he followed based on faith alone. We see his determination and his strength yet, at the same time, we see his weaknesses and his fears. That's what makes a character and the portrayal of that character either real or fake for us, the audience. Ian made him real ... and because of that, many people have let him into their lives and identify with him or just simply like him for what he is -- not perfect but a genuine human being.
I seriously can't think of any other actor that could have done with Desmond what Ian did.
chellly 10-20-2005, 07:46 AM I haven't seen any of his other work, but I'm going to be on the look out for it now to check him out.

Oh, then you MUST see his "The Gospel of John!" Even if you are not Christian or any religion ... his performance is so top-line that you will be blown away! So real, so natural ... and so opposite Desmond! I think it's a good one to see since you've seen him do Desmond. It's avail. for rent at Blockbusters. If you do rent it, try to get the special 3 hours version. You want to see as much as possible.
chellly 10-21-2005, 05:17 PM I'll be sure to do that, thanks for the suggestion!
Southern Belle 10-21-2005, 05:40 PM I also am new to Henry Ian Cusick's work, but I've searched on Google and got a list of things, I will catch up with you all very soon. ( Also Jane, I love the work you do on his official website, I'm a member there too!)
I really love his character on Lost, and can't wait to see him in other things. I think it is sooo cool that he actually answers some of the posts here at the Fuselage.
What a guy!! (If I could figure out how to get the little sign that says 'I heart Desmond', I would put it right here **

There is a good variety of things that Ian has done. He's very, very versatile!
I just wanted to be sure that you know that I don't do anymore than post to the bulletin board on Ian's official site. The webmaster is Barb. I have a Desmond section on my LOST Art site (link in my siggy) but right now ... that's all.
If you want a Desmond sign it's really easy! Just type desmond (in lower case letters) and put it between two colons ( : : ) with no spaces. :desmond:
