View Full Version : YESNO game
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 03:11 AM The rules are extremely easy.* I'm sure you have played this game before.* One of the participants tells a basic story, the others have to find out what exactly happened by asking only "yes-no" questions.
I'll start:
A man was walking down the street.* Suddenly he saw a woman in the crowd.* Not thinking a bit, he ran towards her and killed her.* He was arrested right away, but they soon let him go.* What happened?
Waiting for questions.* (By the way, if you already know the answer, keep a secret).
List of winners
1.* Trueogre (guessed "if not for the rain," "email virus")
2.* that1spunkygirl (guessed "twice murderer")
3.* goloptious (guessed "ice cube")
4.* Peacock Spring (guessed "if not for the rain")
5.* Prncssleia (guessed "excellent professor")
6.* Elspethe (guessed "Superman")
7. jumpandyell (guessed "splinter")
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 03:37 AM gone to bed
Will be back tomorrow. (Maybe. For a bit.) New Year's!!! :)
AudBall 12-31-2004, 04:33 PM Was she his wife?
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 06:29 PM yes
bri_nic23 12-31-2004, 06:38 PM was she cheating?
Ophelia 12-31-2004, 06:39 PM is she dead?
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 06:40 PM bri_nic23, unknown, but probably a good guess
(doesn't determine anything in the story though)
ophelia, yep, now she is as dead as she could be ;D
bri_nic23 12-31-2004, 06:42 PM was she in front of traffic?
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 06:44 PM no
Ophelia 12-31-2004, 06:45 PM was he saving her life?
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 06:47 PM no
that1spunkygirl 12-31-2004, 06:50 PM was she going to hurt someone else either intentionally or not?
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 06:52 PM no
rabgal 12-31-2004, 06:56 PM Did he already think she was dead?
Ophelia 12-31-2004, 06:57 PM was she a criminal?
bugger it, wheres hetty wainthrop when you need her...?
cashmere lady 12-31-2004, 07:00 PM rabgal, yes
ophelia, yes
oh-oh... you, guys, are on to something...
that1spunkygirl 12-31-2004, 07:06 PM did she try to kill him at some point?
Peacock Spring 12-31-2004, 07:11 PM Had he already been convicted of killing her at some previous point?
that1spunkygirl 12-31-2004, 07:13 PM ooh wait, had she been declared legally dead?
rabgal 12-31-2004, 07:24 PM ah -ha ... the double-jeopardy clause !!!
Ophelia 12-31-2004, 09:16 PM He was a policeman, wasn't he!? Then he'd be off the hook cause then he'dve been killing a criminal he was after, making it legal!
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 04:11 PM that1spunkygirl , no to first one (she did not try to kill him); yes to second one ;) (good thinking)
Peacock Spring, yes
ophelia, no :P
Come on, you are almost there. :) When someone guesses this one, I'll put up a new one.
that1spunkygirl 01-01-2005, 04:15 PM okay, then he killed her because he had already been tried for killing her and thought she was dead. (i'm guessing he was acquitted since he's not currently in jail, but he coulda been convicted) when he saw her he knew he could kill her for real this time because he couldn't be tried for the same crime twice
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 04:26 PM that1spunkygirl, yes, that is correct. He had already been in prison for killing her and got out of it. You can't be tried for the same crime twice. I'm counting 1 point for you ;)
The rest of the story: she arranged for it to look like she was killed by him to put the guy in the prison.
New story... lemme think what I'll tell... I have one right on my mind, but I am not sure how wide-known it is. If it's known by everyone, just tell me. I'll put up something else.
Okay... The guy is found dead in the room. He is hanged. There is a puddle of water in the room; nothing else. What happened?
goloptious 01-01-2005, 04:30 PM Okay... The guy is found dead in the room. He is hanged. There is a puddle of water in the room; nothing else. What happened?
Did he commit suicide?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 04:34 PM yes (but you need to find out how)
goloptious 01-01-2005, 04:42 PM was the room locked?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 04:44 PM no
goloptious 01-01-2005, 04:47 PM is he still hanging?
that1spunkygirl 01-01-2005, 04:51 PM what is he hanging from?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 04:53 PM goloptious, yes
that1spunkygirl , I can only answer yes-no questions
goloptious 01-01-2005, 04:54 PM Aha! It came to me....Did he hang himself by standing on a block of ice and waiting for it to melt? (Hence the puddle)
Jessica
that1spunkygirl 01-01-2005, 04:59 PM omg totally forgot that, my bad! :o
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 05:06 PM goloptious, exactly right.
Next one.
A woman was murdered. The detective went to her husband's workplace and questioned the guy. The husband said he had been at work for the whole day and didn't go anywhere else. But when the detective came out in the street, he guessed something. He returned and arrested the husband. What gave him a clue that the husband was guilty?
that1spunkygirl 01-01-2005, 05:23 PM was the wife killed at the husband's workplace?
was she killed at home?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 05:27 PM that1spunkygirl,
1. no
2. yes
mammasays 01-01-2005, 05:54 PM Did the detective see something on the street that made him question the husband's veracity?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 05:57 PM mammasays, yes
mammasays 01-01-2005, 05:58 PM Did the detective see a parking meter?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 05:59 PM no
mammasays 01-01-2005, 06:01 PM Is what the detective saw on the street in any way related to weather?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 06:02 PM mammasays, yes
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 06:08 PM I have to go now and leave this puzzle unsolved. However, I think mammasays is on to something big times. You can post your questions; I'll answer them when I come back.
And... promise... next time I'll make sure the riddle is not anything as easy as it is now. ;D :no2:
mammasays 01-01-2005, 06:10 PM Is the street onto which the detective stepped right next to the employee parking lot?
cashmere lady 01-01-2005, 10:10 PM mammasays, yes; it is.

cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 02:30 PM goloptious, no, but take it one step further ;)
coupons 01-02-2005, 02:32 PM footprints
bri_nic23 01-02-2005, 03:08 PM were there muddy tracks--or any tracks?
cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 04:50 PM coupons, footprints? - I wonder how I can answer this question... or even figure out what you mean. I think it's "no"
bri_nic23, no, none
bri_nic23 01-02-2005, 04:54 PM did he see blood on the ground
Trueogre 01-02-2005, 05:00 PM Um could it be there was a dry patch where her husbands car was parked (it rained when he killed her, but when he left it stopped.
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:05 PM Had the man's windshield been scraped clear of ice, when all the other cars around were still icy?
cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 05:08 PM no, he did not see the blood on the ground
no, there wasn't a dry patch where the car was parked (but, trueogre, you are are one question from the correct version)
no, it wasn't scraped clear of ice
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:10 PM Oh, I got it! The ground under the man's car was wet where it had rained while the car was gone!
bri_nic23 01-02-2005, 05:10 PM crap -you beat me to it!
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:19 PM Whoops....was I supposed to put that in the form of a question? (This is taking me forever; my stupid computer keeps stalling on me.)
If so....was the ground underneath the car wet, showing that it had rained while the car wasn't there?
Trueogre 01-02-2005, 05:22 PM How about the ground was wet and his car was dry?
cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 05:25 PM Okay... while I was writing, new comments appeared.* However, I summed it up below, so I'm leaving my post as it is:
Peacock Spring, yeah, that's right. *It rained in the morning. *So the detective knew there had to be a dry spot under the car for the man to be NOT guilty. *The ground was wet, therefore, he was gone for a period of time. *He lied about being the whole time in his office. *Congrats on guessing! *However, it was much easier to guess after trueogre's question. *So I'll give both of you half a point. *gone to update the winners' list*
Now... this one, as I promised is going to be harder. *But I'll give you a little clue - it is based on a real story that happened.
An excellent professor had to leave his position. *Who was the professor and why did he have to leave? *Good luck!
Trueogre 01-02-2005, 05:29 PM Because he was Professor Plum and he killed someone with the candlestick in the library. ;D
cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 05:33 PM wow, good version... but NO!* Big No!*
I think I'll start putting how many points each riddle is worth (some of them are easier than others).* Okay...* This last one will be 3 points.
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:33 PM Congrats on guessing! *However, it was much easier to guess after trueogre's question. *So I'll give both of you half a point. *gone to update the winners' list*
Not to be picky, but in the first scenario, wouldn't it also have been easier for the winner to guess the double jepoardy conclusion, after my question about the man having already been convicted of killing the woman? *It seems to me that we might have to find a way of scoring this that's fair to everyone, since one question inevitably builds upon another.
Trueogre 01-02-2005, 05:40 PM Newton? Theory of relativity? For every action there's an equal and opposite reaction?
Btw let Peacock Spring have all the points.
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:41 PM lol, no, I don't want all the points....I just wondered if there was a potential for a problem there. :D
cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 05:42 PM Peacock Spring, agree. *What do you suggest then? *It's hard to come up with a solution to this problem. *How about let people ask several questions in a post? *This way if you have a version, you get the credit if it is correct. *Let's say the limit is: 3 questions per post. *What do you think?
trueogre, no to all.
or... should we do away with the points? (i'll do a poll)
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:47 PM Cashmere, I'm fine with any way you want to do it. If you can come up with situations like these, I'm sure you can work out a good scoring system. :D I'll keep playing no matter how you do it; this is a great game!
Anyway, my question: had he done something illegal?
cashmere lady 01-02-2005, 05:55 PM Peacock Spring, ummm.... no :)
I have to leave. Sorry for stumping the game. But I'll be back.
Peacock Spring 01-02-2005, 05:59 PM Had he done something that his superiors considered immoral?

cashmere lady 01-03-2005, 10:55 AM Peacock Spring, yes

update of the riddle An excellent professor had to leave his position. Who was the professor and why did he have to leave?
-he wasn't Professor Plum and he didn't kill someone with the candlestick in the library; nor was he Newton
-he hadn't done anything illegal, but he had done something considered immoral by his superiors
-not a female
-not dead at the time of the story
-didn't have to leave b/c he died
-got another position eventually
-"position" means job

Stephanie
Prncssleia 01-03-2005, 03:57 PM OK- My guess here is:

cashmere lady 01-08-2005, 05:37 PM have we determined the nationality of the person?
yes (German)
Did he refuse to say that Nazis were superior?
Or was it more specifically that Hitler was not superior?
Did he refuse to say that Jews were inferior?
I could go with "yes" to the first two, and the second "yes" is probably more related to the solution of the puzzle.
Peacock Spring 01-08-2005, 08:15 PM So, he was fired because he publicly stated that Hitler was not superior, that he was not correct in his ideals, I'm assuming. I can't go any further than that because I don't know any names of people who lost their jobs for opposing Hitler. *feeling stupid* :-[

Cashmere lady - that is not a fair answer. I think the question means -- do the letters mean something about real names -- like Julius Caesar received a letter from Alexander the great ... for example?
Is the answer to this question as obscure as the answer to the question about the professor?
cashmere lady 01-10-2005, 12:15 PM okaaay... explanation... I think it was not a very clear question (or maybe my mind, one or the other)
Here I go again,
Is this a real situation,
or a just a puzzle type question?
1) no (meaning I haven't used any real people), but could very well be a real situation. AS A MATTER OF FACT!!! It happens all the time!
2) yes (of course yes! why else would I put it in the puzzle-type topic?)
Is the answer to this question as obscure as the answer to the question about the professor?
nah (I thought I'd give you a break. This one is easy.)

No to all.
Was the rock attached to a rope and tied around him to "swim with the fishies"?
Nope. :)
Was the rock on a mine?
Did he....er....Land...on the rock?
No to both.
OK, recap thus far:
Rock was not sharp.
It was not underwater.
It was not high altitude.
Man did not swim with the fishies.
No mine was involved.
He did not land on the rock (no force of impact).
All right, I'm off to bed. I probably won't be able to get back on until tomorrow evening, so if you folks get bored and want to start another one before then, be my guest. :)

Lomiothiel 01-12-2005, 05:36 AM It was in the desert and he starved to death?
Did the rock have anything to do with his death?
Trueogre 01-12-2005, 09:07 AM Because the man had been involved in a plane crash and survived, but he crashed in the desert. He gout out of his plane and started walking for 40 days and fourty nights, each day he got tired and tireder till eventually he came across a rock and thought I know I'll sit down just for a moment because I'm really really tired. Sat down on this beautiful rock and died of exhuastion.
cashmere lady 01-12-2005, 10:10 AM Was it a natural death?

jumpandyell 01-12-2005, 11:29 AM Was it a natural death?
Has he met anyone before he died?
Is the rock a "rock" in the geological sense?
Did he die as soon as he sat down?
Was there anything on the rock? Was it a snake?
No.
Doesn't matter.
Well... in a pseudo-geological sense.
It was quick, but not immediate.
No.
Because the man had been involved in a plane crash and survived, but he crashed in the desert. He gout out of his plane and started walking for 40 days and fourty nights, each day he got tired and tireder till eventually he came across a rock and thought I know I'll sit down just for a moment because I'm really really tired. Sat down on this beautiful rock and died of exhuastion.
No, but a very good idea. :)
It was in the desert and he starved to death?
Did the rock have anything to do with his death?
No.
Yes, most certainly.
cashmere lady 01-12-2005, 12:35 PM "Sat on a rock..." Did he get addicted to drugs? (sleng?)*

mammasays 01-12-2005, 04:15 PM Was the rock radioactive?
mammasays 01-12-2005, 06:05 PM Cashmere Lady -- back to the A and J email riddle ... I thought you said that A and J are related ... what gives?
Trueogre 01-12-2005, 06:10 PM A relation can be anything other than family. Being friends with someone is a relation.
J knew A that's a relation.
jumpandyell 01-12-2005, 08:00 PM "Sat on a rock..." Did he get addicted to drugs? (sleng?)
oh, also, did he sit in the physical sense of the word?
No.
Yes.
Was the rock radioactive?
YES! You're getting very close now. The answer I'm looking for is more specific though.
Also, to clarify something i said earlier...
I think I used the word "pseudo-geological", and I'm not entirely sure what that means. So let me rephrase it:
The rock is actually a rock in the geological sense.... and fictional sense.
So to review:
Rock was not sharp.
It was not underwater.
It was not high altitude.
Man did not swim with the fishies.
No mine was involved.
He did not land on the rock (no force of impact).
The rock is not a rock "star".
The death was not natural.
People he met before dying has no bearing on the riddle.
The rock is a rock in a geological, yet fictional, sense.
He did not die instantly, but death came soon afterward.
Nothing was on the rock, except for the man after he sat on it.
He did not die of exhaustion from wandering.
He did not starve.
The rock was the cause of death.
"Sat on a rock" is not slang for drug addiction.
He sat on the rock, in the physical sense.
And the rock is radioactive...
