or just Sawyer? It seems like he's fine with Jin, but Sawyer's overtures toward friendship are often intermingled with actions that would cause me to doubt his friendship. I know Michael's reaction to it was not the best, but Sawyer did threaten him if he didn't fire the flare gun. Does anyone think that Sawyer and Michael will come out of this as close friends. My mother always told me that you couldn't really call someone your friend until you had had a solid fight with them. It seems to be true of Jin and Michael. They have really moved past all that bitterness about Sun, and seem well on their way to friendship. Anybody think the same will happen between Michael and Sawyer?

Yeah, I think that Michael and Sawyer will eventually end up as close friends, even if they try to deny it to everyone else. You can't go through all that they have gone through, and not have some sort of bond. I think their problem is that they are too alike, though they would never admit it. They are both stubborn, proud, they don't trust other people very easily. And sure they've had their moments of hatred towards each other, but who doesn't? Like your mother said, you can't really call someone your friend until you've been through everything with them, the good and the bad. So even though they've got their differences, I still think that they will end up as very close friends in the long run.

Sawyer says "I ain't doing nothing 'til I know if my friends are okay" so I guess he sees them as his friends now(Jin and Michael).

Well, a lot is being said about Michael being mean to Sawyer these days. My question is, in the real world, do we consider someone who threatens us our friend? You would have to be complete scum to let someone die who was drowning, and I don't believe Sawyer is complete scum. I do, however, think he is what lies beneath the scum, nearly ready to rise to it's ranks. Don't get me wrong, I love the character. I'm hoping for his redemption. I just don't think saving someone's life makes you more than a human being, and I don't think that always translates to considering someone your best friend.

If we met someone in our real lives who was a conman, regardless of his personal ethical limit on conning people with children present, do we consider a conman one of our true friends? He has no doubt ripped off the elderly and the naive. These are not admirable qualities in a friend. How do you really trust someone like that? I just don't think he can be anyone's friend until he acknowledges his past and intimates that to them, along with his desire to be something different. He came close to that with Michael, but he didn't come out with it. Maybe that's what Michael is waiting for from Sawyer before he considers the guy his friend. I think Michael tried to get that from him when he asked if Sawyer wanted to die or be a hero, Sawyer just wouldn't meet him halfway. Thoughts?

Oh, I definetely agree. I didn't mean that I think that they are best friends yet, but I think they can at least tolerate each other now. Plus, in one the new preview clips for "...And Found", Michael is talking to Libby and she calls Jin and Sawyer, Michael's friends. Then, Michael says "Well, one of them might be", and he was obviously referring to Jin. So, what I'm saying is that yes, I think they have some sort of bond now, but they're too darn stubborn to admit it!

i_love_dmjgmfna, well I believe you called that one correctly. Interesting that Libby said that she had never seen anyone as afraid as Sawyer. I think that was addressing Sawyer's inability to lower his guard with Michael and answer his question honestly when Michael asked if he wanted to be a hero or to die. That was a critical moment between the two of them, IMHO. It meant the difference between Michael kind of liking Sawyer, and being friends with him.

If both Sawyer and Michael have "trust issues" then resolving that with a good solid fight could be just the right medicine. It seemed to work with Jin.

He has had his friend Andy for many years? Didn't Michael mention he tossed him work, way back in Solitary?, and then Susan called Andy when she hadn't heard from Michael.

shootfire how about Sawyer getting a spot on the raft. I know that Michael said it was because he needed certain supplies from Sawyer, but maybe there was more to it?

A funny thing happened on my way through the transcripts. I believe I see where things went wrong with Sawyer.

Michael [pulling Sawyer up]

C'mon, buddy. You just saved our *****, buddy.

[Michael picks up Sawyer's gun and wraps his shirt around it.]

Michael [a bit angry]

Here's your shirt. You should put that back on before you burn

Michael was all buddy you're great before he saw the gun. That last line was Michael telling Sawyer in so many words to "go to He-double-hockeysticks." Sawyer's criminal history is no big secret among the lostaways. In fact, back when Michael thought Sawyer had poisoned him, Michael told him he was a criminal and he didn't want Sawyer around Walt. I'm sure it didn't help his case any when Sawyer told Walt the only letter he ever wrote was to the man he was gonna kill, but I think Michael would have taken it as a so much talk. The problem was that Sawyer did indeed have a gun, which reinforced the criminal aspect.

Then there was this line.

The raft is hit by a shark and Sawyer pulls out his pistol]

Sawyer: What the hell is that?
Michael: I see you managed to hold on to your best friend there. That thing ain't going to work, anyway.

I think Michael is saying Sawyer cannot be his friend as long as he's stuck in his old criminal pattern. He might also be alluding to Sawyer being able to hold onto the gun but not being able to help Jin or Walt. Hmmm...

It was Special, yes.

Well, I'm sure Michael did appreciate Sawyer standing guard over the second raft. He probably also felt guilty for having accused Sawyer of poisoning him when he found out that Kate was as reasonable a suspect as he was.
