Near beginning of every episode we see the word "LOST" in white letters on a black background. We also hear some eerie music. Is there anything that we (the audience) supposed to see or hear? Is there any significance to this at all?

I am only asking because I know on other shows (such as the former reality show THE MOLE) there had been significance in the title.
