View Full Version : Henry Ian..
LostFANatic91 10-17-2005, 02:56 PM Henry Ian is already starting to be on my top 5 actors lists ^.^
I really, really am starting to like him, he is such a great actor not only in Lost but in other things like "The gospel of John" I am still trying to find more of his work... But what do you guys think of Henry Ian? I think he is beyond a terrific actor... He already answered my questions... he goes up a lot on my respect charts.... And he was nice!!! YAY!
--Katie--
Just to lt you all know Johnny Depp is on my top 5 list :) That is how much I like Henry Ian!
luvtzus 10-17-2005, 06:33 PM I agree FANactic, he is a very good actor and seems like a very nice person. Yeah, Johnny Depp is great in my eyes, too. I also love Orlando Bloom.
Did you see where Henry Ian Cusick's Lifetime movie Perfect Romance is on this week? Watch it, if you haven't already(it was on early this year). I am sure you will like it!
Horizon_Lost 10-18-2005, 08:07 PM ooooh, another fan from Maine! Hello!
Yes, Henry Ian is great! I have to admit that the first time I saw him was on LOST, but seeing him once had me hoping he would return! Now I want to check out some of his other films :)
luvtzus 10-18-2005, 08:49 PM Hello fellow "mainiac!"
If you like Henry Ian Cusick, you have to check out the film "The gospel according to John." It kinda got lost after Passion of the Christ, but HIC gives a phenomenal performance as Jesus. Even if you are not a Christian, I think this film will touch your heart.

I don't have cable! Would you please do a recap of it?
"The Gospel of John" sells as a DVD on Amazon.com, BTW. Used or new prices start as low as just under $16!! (You can find good deals on new, never used stuff at the UONP page!) Most reviews have been positive; one grump says that Henry Ian smirks too much! Henry Ian doesn't SMIRK, buddy!
Check it out, if you want!

hiya luv
it was a nice surprise to see henry ian cusick as desmond - i had earmarked the gospel film for a birthday present months before he appeared on 'lost'. (have to wait til the week before Christmas... ch!) i found the website for the movie (http://video.movies.go.com/thegospelofjohn/) and found him to be just the Jesus i'd imagined - a tender Majesty. i saw glimpses of this in 'the passion' -especially in the scenes with Jesus teasing his mum.
i'm new here (still very wet behind the ears) and looking forward to comparing notes and impressions on the whole 'lost' culture. it will make scientists and philosphpers of us all - so much minutiae to examine and theories to explore!
Southern Belle 10-25-2005, 01:32 PM I highly recommend the Henry Ian Cusick movie "Perfect Romance", it is a great place to start your exploration of Ian's work.
He is wonderful in this movie, tender, funny, gorgeous!! You won't be disappointed.
If you check out his website, you also won't be disappointed, it's growing, and is a wealth of information on all things Ian.

Hi Saint,
I agree. No insult to Jim Cavaziel, who I think is a good actor, but I so much preferred Henry Ian's performance. It really touched me. I also love the movie Perfect Romance, he was so appealing in that role. I watched it twice last week! I can't wait to see more of his work. I always liked Lost, but wasn't into the fan culture until Henry Ian came on as Desmond. Now I can't wait until he returns!

Yeah, I love love love Perfect Romance. Henry Ian is so appealing, and the ending is so upbeat. They don't make enough movies like that anymore.

Ann Marie, I saw PR ... I'll PM you more later ... It is now my favorite movie! I just LOVED IT! Ian was so, so, SO wonderful as Peter ...right from the first moment we see him (and flashes that smile!!). When he gets all excited at the computer when she wants to meet him ... that was just so perfect. Made my heart flutter!
That does help, thanks! And how would you say Henry Ian did? Was it better than Jim Caveziel? The same? Or very close?

Oh two totally different performances. To me, Ian's was so original and genuine and human that I just loved it from beginning to end. It's a must see for everyone ... whether they are Christina, different faith or no faith. It's just a very well done film and Ian is just remarkable as Jesus!
luvtzus 10-27-2005, 08:12 PM Hi Jane
I knew you would love Perfect Romance. When I watch that movie I want to move to Hollywood, write a sitcom script, and spend the rest of my life trying to get Henry Ian Cusick an American sitcom. Of course, I couldn't leave the pets. But wouldn't he be fabulous in that type of role? Hopefully someone will be smart enough to cast him like that. I know that a show starring him would be very successful.
Ann Marie :desmond:
Save The Humans 10-27-2005, 11:39 PM Except we want Henry Ian to come back as Desmond, and as a regular cast member of LOST!
He does well as Jesus in "The Gospel of John." It's no use comparing his performance to anyone else's. You have to look at how he handles the material. (And the Bible is the ultimate material!) Is his performance convincing? Do you believe that the character he is portraying is who he says he is? Do you believe someone like that would behave/act/react as he did in the movie? My personal answer is YES. I especially liked seeing his frustration--at the people and the religious leaders--who couldn't see the truths right under their noses. Yet he could enjoy himself at a wedding, be happy, be sad, be righteously angry. (One of the best cleansing of the Temple scenes I've ever seen!)
Get hold of the DVD. Start with the 2-hour version. (The 3-hour version quotes the entire Gospel of John, which is good, but more of Jesus' spoken teachings are in this Gospel than in the other three. And several teachings run a chapter or more long. We humans just ain't conditioned to that! The 2-hour version shows all the movie, but edits out parts of the longer teachings. Of course, you SHOULD watch the 3-hour version; just be sure you have time and are in listening mode.)
Hope that helps! I sure am glad the Desmond board is here! :D

I would love to see Henry Ian as a regular cast member on Lost, but after seeing how appealing he was in Perfect Romance, I loved to see him in that kind of role on TV, too. Why not both? Plenty of actors have done that. I just read an interview with MC Gainey who plays "the bearded man" (lots of speculation about who the character really is, but I won't get into that), the one who took Walt on Lost. He said he did his Lost role, and a new role in Rebecca Romjhan's (I know that is spelled wrong, the one who is John Stamos's ex wife) new pilot (which may be picked up as a replacement show this winter) at about the same time. Allyson Hannigan is a regular cast member on How I met Your Mother, and also has a recurring role on Veronica Mars. So it has been done before. Plus, in a role like he had in Perfect Romance, we can see him all cleaned up, which trust me is a treat!

No, it hasn't been released for the UK. But double check your DVD player and make sure it won't play Region 1. I know that most European vcrs play region 1 & 2. Your DVD player might, too. If not, and if you have a vcr that plays region 1, it's been released on vhs, too.

I agree completely that Ian's portrayal of Jesus is spot on. I only have the 3 hour version and wouldn't trade it for the 2 hr for anything. It's such a compelling story that I think it needs all of the naration. But then I'm a stickler for detail and love it when the time is taken to be thorough.
Southern Belle 10-28-2005, 09:41 AM Hey Lutzvus, I totally agree with you!! Ian has such range, that he can do a fabulous job in serious films and also blow us away with romantic comedies.

I've never seen him look better, than in Perfect Romance, I really LOVED that show, and I'm gonna watch it again this weekend! :jump1:

I'm torn ... yes, Ian was fabulous looking and acting in PR. But I also love the wild hair for Desmond. Also, with Desmond, you get a glimpse of that softer more gentle side of him (like the character of Peter in PR) and then the stronger and more forceful side of Desmond in the bunker (which I wonder about them keeping that part of his personality going now that he's free ... ).
I'm also planning on watching PR again this weekend.

Hi One and Jane
I am going to watch Perfect Romance this weekend too! I am recuperating from bronchitis and PR is just the movie to make me feel better. I wish Lifetime would release it on DVD.
Anyway, we should all send positive Henry Ian thoughts while watching Perfect Romance towards Hollywood and hope some smart producer hires him for a full time job on an American TV show!

I don't know, if I were ill I don't know if PR would help. I cried so much through that movie that if I had a cold or bronchitis, I think I'd choke. Seriously ... I cried through so many moments, both happy and sad. It's a WONDERFUL movie!!

I, too, appreciate the 3-hour version, jbdean. It covers every word in the Gospel. I'm just saying that the attention span of the average movie viewer probably couldn't handle the longer teachings, wonderfully well as Henry Ian spoke them! Too danged conditioned to action, action, action--that's humans in the Western World! I think that's probably why they edited a 2-hour version, as well. Plan to watch it over the weekend, and will let you know what I thought.
I want Henry Ian signed to be in an American TV show, too. . .and the name of that American TV show is--LOST!

You might be right. Too bad.
Oh, Ian doesn't narrate. That's another actor.
Save The Humans 10-30-2005, 10:23 PM I know, jbdean. Christopher Plummer is the Narrator. He does well, too.
I watched the 2-hour version, and have concluded--everyone should watch the 3-hour version! The 2-hour was OK, but it seemed to me that it was somehow moving TOO fast. There was more a fullness, a completeness, to the story with the 3-hour. They may have cut TOO much out. Or, it simply wasn't meant to be seen in a shorter version! Fine by me! Still a must-see--and not only because of Henry Ian. (Though that is a good reason to watch. :D)
jbdean 10-30-2005, 11:19 PM My favorite line in the film is when Jesus tells his deciples, "You didn't find me. I found you." And then the look on their faces. Just wonderful!
Save The Humans 10-31-2005, 12:26 AM The scene where he washes Peter's feet? JUST like I've always envisioned it! Serious moment, but rather amusing, too. And aren't we the same way when we're enthusiastic about something--like Henry Ian, for instance? :D
jbdean 10-31-2005, 08:29 AM I also loved how he kept saying, "I tell you the truth." Not loud, like some revelation, but simple yet filled with confidence. I also greatly enjoyed how they had Pontius Pilate portrayed. The conflict within him ... and yet he really was a weak man, giving in to the people that way. Yet ... it all had to be to fullfill prophecy.

Yes I agree Jane. I have only seen the two hour version, but I am going to buy the three hour version. When I was a kid I loved the movie with Jeffrey Hunter as Jesus. I haven't seen it in ages, but I am going to look for it on amazon. But Gospel of John is so good. I can't wait for Gospel of Mark.
Ann Marie :desmond:
Save The Humans 10-31-2005, 09:51 PM lutzvus, both the 2-hour AND 3-hour versions are on the 2-DVD set of "The Gospel of John" that is offered at Amazon.com. Reasonable price, too!
"The Gospel of Mark" is or was recently in production. I expect to see it offered next year, possibly before Easter. I'm delighted that Henry Ian agreed to do this second Gospel.
The phrase 'I tell you the truth' is the Good News' version's translation of the old King James standby, "verily." I, too, was impressed by the fact that Henry Ian's Jesus said it with the confidence that someone who knows that it IS the truth. He would often have a sense of urgency in saying it, as well. As one who was genuinely distressed that people simply wouldn't see something so obvious--but understanding that, in this world, it was hard to see the obvious. Pilate's well-known question of "what is truth?" is one we all ask.
Good to chat with people who have seen this film. It should be in every household, IMHO!
jbdean 11-01-2005, 12:09 AM Not wanting to dampen the fire but while it's on IMDb that Ian is set to do the GoM, he hasn't confirmed that it's going to happen. We're all hoping but nothing, from his side, has been confirmed. If I'm wrong, I haven't heard it yet.

This thread has just about convinced me to go ahead and buy this film, and I'm not that much of a movie watcher! I did see "Perfect Romance" on Lifetime quite a while ago, and I enjoyed it, but at that time, I didn't know who Ian was. *hangs head in shame*
Several of you sound like you are fellow Christians.....? In an interview that was linked from HIC's site, he said something that made me believe he was, too; something like, "As a Christian, I....etc." That's what made me curious to know how personal faith makes a difference in how he interprets and plays different roles, and I'm still waiting for him to answer that question on the "for the actors" board. I bet he's got one of those pesky "real life" situations going on, too, that prevents him from coming here as often as we'd like.

Hey, why wait till December when November is here right now!
Loved GoJo, disappointed that there is not a definitive GoMa, but I have to hope it will happen. How can any actor not be completely moved by playing Jesus? And not want to play him again?
I have never heard of Bruce Marchiano. Is he an actor that does only Christian films?

hiya ann marie
i'd already asked for it for my birthday. it's probably not written in stone but my husband was SO very relieved that i wanted something fairly normal. no boulders, garden structures or antique books or estate-sale chandeliers. (all of which are still candidates...he doesn't get off that easy. ) i don't want to rattle him any more than absolutely necessary since there are several birthdays and the Christmas holiday that he has to deal with in the months of november - january. i keep asking to celebrate a half-birthday (or a merry un-birthday) in june but the extended family keeps nixing it. rats - a truckload of good loam is much easier to get in june than december.
the movie i was thinking of (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0000A0LAI/103-8984807-7868624?v=glance)is The Visual Bible film "The Gospel According to Matthew". Christianbook.com (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/easy_find?Ntk=keywords&Ntt=visual+bible&action=Search&N=0&Ne=0&event=ESRCN&nav_search=1&cms=1&Go.x=11&Go.y=10) lists both GoJo and the Matthew as from the Visual Bible Series. i don't know if they're both offered via the same Visual Bible production company but since they're both on the same cb page, it may be so.
if you run bruce through google, you can find several sites about him. i remember when the matthew came out, he was touted as the 'laughing Jesus'. he was very animated in the interviews i read.
wouldn't it be neat if all the actors who played Jesus got together for a discussion? imagine!:6:

I know from a story I read (someone interviewed Henry about GoJ), that he didn't spend much time around the other actors and crew. He was busy memorizing his lines. Possibly, he didn't want to get any words wrong? I don't know. He didn't say much about how the role affected him. He did point out that Jesus was something of the Ultimate Revolutionary. His teachings went against the grain of the world's socio/political/religious system. But he taught with authority. And the "revolution" he spoke of wasn't an overthrow of Rome (STH: Indeed, Christ told us to give to Caesar what was Caesar's and to God what was God's. So much for dodging your taxes! :D). His "revolution" was one of transformation. There was nothing "They" could counter that with!
He's just GOT to do GofM! Who else could possibly do it?
jbdean 11-03-2005, 06:58 PM STH, actually Ian said that after playing Jesus he began to go to Mass more than he had been.

a70eezchild 11-05-2005, 11:37 PM [/font] i should have titled it better.... :ohwell:
I'm sure you all have seen that Ian answered a bunch of posts late last nite...
So, no worries, you didn't scare him away!
(Not sure that it's possible to scare him away...he did play JC after all...lol)
a70eezchild 11-05-2005, 11:40 PM looky what i found - a GoJ game (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/image/73568).
that surely is a bonny picture on the box!
I bought the game when it first came out...gorgeous pics and playing pieces.
Haven't played it, though...I can quote John in it's entirety after having watched GoJ multiple times, but my family and friends wouldn't have a clue...Bible-ists we are not. But it IS a very nice game to own.

hahaha! did i miss something? that's not uncommon for me.
oh gee - i WISH!
i have a month and some days to go - the week before Christmas, for pete's sake!
GoJo'll be a nice Christmas movie - all 3 some hours. maybe i'll ask for an irish linen hankie to go with it.
i've added a faramir action figure to my list, along with a few out-of-print books, ancient movies and a fairly rare plant - they'll all HATE me for that!
saint magenta 11-06-2005, 12:38 AM Wow, thanks for the info, Saint Magenta (hey, with all my cats, I thought I was the queen of feline ruckus?).
A GoJo board game, I love it!

Where did you see the preview, SM? I haven't seen any trailers for it yet ... and I'm dying to! Not too sure, though, that I want to see him get beaten up! But I'll be first in line when it opens!
Oh, and don't post right after your post. That's bumping a thread and you can get in trouble for that. Use the little blue icon -- to the right of the QUOTE button to reply to more than one post (that's how I did this one).

Just one thing....how do you use it? I've tried that button on several occasions, and it does absolutely nothing when I click on it.

When you click on it, the white "paper" switches to a page with text on it (really tiny text). Then, after you've clicked on all of the ones you want to reply to, you click either on the last post you selected to reply to or on the main POST REPLY button at the top left or bottom left of all of the posts. It should populate all of your selections into one reply. Then, just post your comments after the end of each quote.
