View Full Version : Something Interesting
Jakko DeDust 10-25-2005, 02:03 PM I don't know if this has any connection whatsoever, but it seemed strange at the time.
Last night I was going through some of my old comic books...I mean some really old ones. I'm 37, and I have some dating back to the early 70s.
One in particular was an issue from the DC series Tarzan. I've read it a dozen times or more in the past. I picked it up and started browsing through it, and was shocked at what I saw.
This issue was one part of a multipart story, so all I have is what's in this issue. A cargo ship in the southern Pacific is carrying exotic animals and Tarzan himself and is jacked by some of the crew who mutiny. The leader of the mutineers is named De Groot. The mutineers also capture a yacht and take some prisoners.
However, a serious storm blows up, Tarzan escapes and defeats the mutineers. The ship winds up on a reef near an island. The survivors make it to shore, and Tarzan frees the animals. He also banishes DeGroot and the others to the far side of the island while the survivors await rescue. That ended that issue.
It's weird...it hits on some points similar to LOST. I wonder if J.J. drew any influence from this comic story.
I'm probably reaching here...just struck me as strange.
jessieslost 10-25-2005, 02:35 PM Well, if you're reaching, it's not a far one. Too bad you can't get your hands on any of the others from the series. I'm sure the producers/writers must have read those before- it's too close to not be related. Maybe they thought it would be obscure enough not to get noticed. Good post!
Jakko DeDust 10-25-2005, 03:19 PM Ok, did some online research, and found that it was based upon a Burroughs story titled "Tarzan and The Castaways." The story itself is summarized at the following link and it provides short character descriptions:

I could see this story serving as an inspiration for Lost.
Noeland 10-25-2005, 03:50 PM De Groot is DUTCH in that tarzan story, and isn't Alvar Hanso Dutch? And he funded the Degroots research? Yeah, I think we may be looking at some inspiration, and probably some homages here too. These guys do love thier books!! :)

Baileysdad 10-25-2005, 04:42 PM Yep...I would say they took a lot of inspiration from other writers before them...it's the entire Elvis, Beatles, Dillon, Springsteen, Mellancamp twist...they all inspire each other and the other takes what has been done and puts a new spin on it and it is still great...
It's like what came first...the Honeymooners or the Flintstones?? Same damn story...different time and place...West Side Story and Romeo and Juliet...same...

Good find! I see some inspiration here:
Abdullah Abu Nejm former ivory poacher, slave trader
Janette Laon beautiful French companion of Krause
i_love_dmjgmfna 10-25-2005, 05:45 PM Nice find, Jakko. It's very possible that this could have been one of the inspirations for LOST. Damon is a pretty big comic book fan.
PosseGal 10-26-2005, 09:31 PM Very cool and a great find.
Thanks!!
