Hey there! I'm new to the Fuselage as well. I think you need to be around for a certain amount of time, or have a certain number of posts to be able to upload an avatar. I think you get more rights once you get 'off the tarmac'.

I learned this when I joined - you need to have a certain number of posts and be here for 10 exact days before getting an avatar. It will happen automatically.

As for getting an avi ... once you pass the 10 days and number of posts you can get an avi like this:

If you have one on your hard drive, you'll get the file from there (explained later). If not, you can get one from the Gallery.

1] Find the avi you want.
2] If you want one from the Gallery, save it to your hard drive.
3] After you've saved the avi, go to your User CP (link in the upper right corener of the green menu at top of each page).
4] Select "Edit Avatar"
5] You'll see two sections, one says DO NOT USE AN AVATAR, below that is 2 options. 1 to find an avi that's on a website (input the url), 2 is "Upload an Avatar From Your Computer." Use option #2. Click the button "CHOOSE FILE" to select a file. Find the avi you have on your hard drive. Select it.
6] Be sure to click on the SAVE CHANGES button at the bottom to save your avi.

When the page refreshes, your avi will show up at the top of the page and automatically populate into all of the posts you've done here so far!
